This is a trope used in fiction. The wiki does not endorse or approve of this behavior. sounds good to me.

The tag seems like a good idea in principle (much like anybody else would say). If only it can effectively be implemented...

As for the axing/moratorium*

of RL entries on Sex, Porn and Rape tropes, I say do it!

I'd suggest phrasing it as This wiki, not The wiki.

The real life sections on the rape tropes has already been completed. I don't know about the general sex tropes, though.

@377: I would just keep with not endorse, but if the community (or the Powers That Be) want it, it's OK.

But what if that isn't enough to make Google happy?

This has happened before, so they might be less willing to give ads back this time around.

@ 369 that might be an idea. One of those "I declare I am over eighteen" pages in front of the main page, or that drops in when you follow the link. Same in the T&C (new T&C document perhaps?) and then if anyone complains or brings up Wont Someone Think Of The Children we can say we're not for children, we're for adults (although not "adult" in that way) and anyone who suddenly brings up "I'm in school and my teacher got shocked" can be told they shouldn't be here to start with. After all, we've made an effort. And yeah, people will lie on those "click to confirm", but at least the ones that get to stick around are those smart enough to keep their head down and it protects us from the worst of the raging hordes of do-gooders.

This is a trope used in fiction. This wiki neither endorses nor approves this behavior. is more grammatically correct, I think. Can we pothole to Family Friendly?

Another vote for "neither endorsed nor approved." I'm not sure bolding is necessary, but I'm probably in the minority on that one.

We should also add an edit comment at the top of every rape page not to go into explicit detail. The pages are surprisingly clean already, but still.

Agreed! Once again, here's the (upgraded) supposed plan of action.

  • Remove the Real Life examples from Porn Tropes, Sex Tropes, and Rape Tropes. Also do not allow anyone to add Real Life examples there.
  • De-creepify and trim the examples from Porn Tropes, Sex Tropes, and Rape Tropes where necessary
  • Add a disclaimer to the tropes in the Porn Tropes, Sex Tropes, and Rape Tropes indexes stating that This is a trope used in fiction. This wiki does not endorse or approve of this behavior or something similar.
  • Fix some of the titles in those indexes (along with adding in disclaimers) so that they are more neutral. We do not want to criticize works that use them - we are documentors at first, not critics. Stay neutral.

So on the subject of Rape Tropes should we have a separate thread to start going though all these?

Also some place to quickly rename those deemed needed and or removed off the index?

(I say quickly because a lot Anime Tropes are still awaiting Repairshop backlog from that special efforts thread.)

@385: Family Friendly is something concerned with rape or porn on the site. Merely describing what is in story wouldn't be covered there, nor would the "approve" bit.

What the hell is "Moral Guardian"-ish about wanting to condemn works that use tropes depicting rape as excusable or funny? That should be common human decency, really! It's not about being offended or repulsed. I'm not going "ewww". This is not the same as the call against the "homosexual agenda" or anything real Moral Guardians do (funny how unneutral that trope writeup is...). Using those tropes is wrongin fiction, too. In a way especially there. If an actual rape victims thinks Rape Is Love I pity her, but she won't do much damage with that opinion. But in media widely consumed by people? Such attitudes just shouuldn't fly!

For one, we've started cleanup and have agreed upon disclaimers already.
Disclaimers are silly (because what they say, that much should be obvious already) and just cutting RL examples as cleaning won't go far enough.

Neither is what we're doing, Octo.

Our job is to document things, not mudsling at all. Nor is gushing. Our job is to be neutral. We are not recommending a work by having a page on it whatsoever.

Well then you shouldn't be wondering if people see us as endoring those things. Including Google. And you know what? They'd be right! If this community sees condemning such concepts like Rape Is Love as "mudslinging", then it really ought to be judged!

@ Inane 242: Well, I figure they'd have to be asked how much is enough then. If they can't supply exact guidelines, they shouldn't demand others to follow them to a T.

Since neutrality, even for those things, is a goal, how about something along the lines of This is to document these tropes only. TV Tropes makes no judgments on these tropes.

[up]Also an option, but "not endorse" should definitively be in.

[up]Since rape is a criminal act, saying "Not approves or endorses" is better than "Not emits judgements on".

Octo: But those works already exist. Frowning upon their contents is one thing, but just cutting them off to pretend they don't exist is another.

Edit: Although on second reading, I'm not sure that's your intention at all. Sorry if I misinterpreted you.

We are not mudslinging whatsoever. We are not here to judge it. We are here to document it. We are not here to throw our opinions on it. Go write a Review for it if you have a problem with it.

We aren't doing anything of that at all, Octo.

How many things are we working on at once here? I was thinking we might go to Special Efforts with a list of the rape tropes and decide which need to be renamed there. While we handle that there, we can work on other issues here without being distracted.

We're not Moral Guardians but it would do this site a lot of good if we took the plunge and implied rape is bad.
