Nuuuuuu!
Damn it...they are my favorite company, especially now that Bioware fell from grace. What I wish is that if they have to die, they die, instead of becoming a shadow of their former selves bought by EA or Activision.

Instead, I have learned a horrible truth of existence...some stories have no meaning.Good god, please no. Obsidian is one of the few developers I still whole-heartedly like.
Here's hoping for their continued stability.

Tropers watching moviesOh man, I played KOTOR II and Halo Wars and loved them both...Also liked New Vegas but the game's bugs sort of killed it for me. Really hate to see them go, if they do.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.Awesome, another developer I love is gonna go down the drain.
I love the industry right now.
Ouch, this doesn't bode well.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelNew Vegas did well, it even outsold Fallout 3, then Metacritic gave them a score of 84%, they needed 85
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/Very bad, and rather fucking ridiculous! I love that game, yet a less-than-legendary Metacritic score means no royalties and therefore layoffs?
And this is just after I saw a Totalbiscuit mailbox episode about the ridiculousness of the "professional" critic situation...
Yeah, the Metacritic-related practices in general are rather detrimental to the games industry as a whole, and it must stop!

I now go by Graf von Tirol.Welcome to the era of mass-produced copycat games. Individual expression and Doing It for the Art are no longer viewed as valid forms of expression in the Gaming Industry, and will be driven out by the mass-produced churn.
Happiness is zero-gee with a sinus cold.Reminds me of Robocop and Shadowrun for some reason
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/.... I hate Metacritic right now.
In our heart, Mr. Ando will always be a penguin.Metacritic is basically an example of why some things shouldn't be left to democracy.
"Roll for whores."Josh Sawyer can't catch a break. Lead designer of several projects and only around 2 have actually been released.
And then I started hating the whole world.
Obsidian has consistently released ambitious but frustratingly flawed games. Not surprised that its been hit where it hurts.
"You want to see how a human dies? At ramming speed." - Emily Wong.^ Yeah their games always faced some kind of serious design flaws or bugs...the only game I think that they released without much hitch is Mask of the Betrayer...
Give me cute or give me...something?@The Metacritic thing: No, it was actually because Bethesda ate most of the profits from New Vegas.
Sorry, I can't hear you from my FLYING METAL BOX!Well, Bethesda, err, Im not surprised, Bethesda is my least favorite RPG company, and now I havee a second reason for that,
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/Ugh. This is horrible. Seems the only way to be successful in the video game industry nowadays is to remake the same game every year and release gobs of half-finished DLC.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."Obsidian gave us the best stories in the industry....it's a shame to see them like this while other crappy games with less than two paragraphs of plot earn millions.
Instead, I have learned a horrible truth of existence...some stories have no meaning.Hey, as far im concerned, the first games doesnt even have plots yet the won millions
http://steamcommunity.com/id/Xan-Xan/We'll just see what this means in the near future. I hope they don't go under. They may make bugtastic and glitchfest games, but they are still good none the less.
Total Biscuit has this to say on the matter (starting at the 10:50 mark)
But yeah, we should just do away with scores and just have the reviews be words of honesty, much like RockPaperShotgun's "Wot I Think" articles.

I now go by Graf von Tirol.Okay, so they make buggy games. I'm still playing them, though. I'd rather have a well-written buggy game than a poorly-written flawless game, any day of the week.
But I'm weird like that - that's why I put up with driving a car that has a million things wrong with it. It's actually fun to drive. I view games much the same way.

Source.
Many of the staffers apparently let go were working on an upcoming, as-yet-unannounced project that had been codenamed "Project North Carolina," which is now purportedly canceled. However, some were staffers that had been working on the upcoming South Park RPG, which will be published by THQ.
Those affected reportedly include lead programmer Frank Kowalkowski, who had been with the company for a little more than eight and a half years, as well as lead producer Jason Fader.
Obsidian has yet to release an official statement on the layoffs. We'll update this story if/when they do.
This is very grave news, I thought Obsidian was doing well after the success of New Vegas, but with over 30 out of 135 people gone there's a good chance it'll go under completely. That cancelled project looked like a new Fallout game too.
