All-Purpose Namespace Icon Thread: Sandbox.Namespace Icons

Go To

This thread deals with all issues concerning the icons used for namespaces and their buttons, including proposals for icons for new namespaces and bugs with existing icons.

When submitting an icon, the icon images should be exactly 16x16 png with a transparent background. A gif can also be used, but png is usually better. Also, the naming convention is important. It should be the namespace in lowercase.

I am compiling a list of namespaces that need icons, and icons for those name spaces. This would be preferred to be done quickly because I've convinced Eddie to hook them up when I get them complied. I will be editing the OP as we go.

NOTE: Use the link to the sandbox in the thread title to see what still needs to be decided on.

Subpages that still need icons:

  • Animation/
  • FanWorks/
  • Manhua/
  • Sandbox/
  • Timeline/

Subpages that already have icons hooked up (please note, this list has been collapsed into a note, so that the floating header post isn't huge)

Links to installation-ready icons here and forward.

I don't think we need a web original icon either.

FIM Fiction's favicon is good, but again, questionable because it is their actual current favicon.

I like the teddy bear for toys.

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

I would not mind teddy bear for Toys/.

What about JustForFun/?

Don't think the troll face is a good idea.

As for the FIMFiction favicon, I asked one of the mods if we could use it. I haven't got a reply back yet.

[up] I'd say the teddy bear for Toys/ and tongue for JustForFun/.

If ripping off a logo from another site is bad, why are we doing exactly that for Let's Play/?

It's the difference between someone's interpretation of the logo and straight-up copying the logo.

[up][up] The LetsPlay/ one was made by a troper. The proposed FanFic/ one is directly from the site.

[up] And the "WebAnimation/" is from Strong Bad's Message Bored.

I'm not LGBT. I just think Rain's really cool. Apologies if my humor gets too painful.

I'm not really fussed about the use of favicons, myself.

I really doubt the Brothers Chaps are going to complain about us using an emoticon from their very-quickly-defunct message bored [sic], either.

Oh, and I got permission for the FIMFiction favicon. Is there enough of a consensus to use it?

[up] As the one who suggested it, it has my vote. I'd still wait for some more [tup] now that we know it's okay.

WRT to FanFiction, seeing as we have explicit permission (not that we necessarily needed it, but it's good to have), and because it's just generic enough to work, I say go for it.

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but while we're on the topic of favicons, I think TV Tropes could really use one. Wouldn't you love to see a little lampshade icon in your URL bar or on your bookmarks tab? I imagine adding it would have to be done at the administrative level, but it would only help the site.

There is one. A black TV with antennae.

[up] Seriously? I've never seen a favicon for TV Tropes. It always appears blank to me, no matter what I use. I found it here, but it never appears on my browser (latest Firefox), but I tried it on Chrome, IE, and Android Browser. Never saw it before. I guess that's a tech and bug issue, though.

It doesn't show up in the adress field in firefox, but it works in tabs.

[up] Yes, I get it, but it never appears for me for some reason. I started a Tech Wishlist & Bug Report forum about this issue. Am I the only one who can't see it?

[down] I do not get it in tabs either.

See my edit, and we had problems with it before.

I think that ico/gif thingy might be back.

Shows up in the tabs for me. Always has.

This is dangerously off-topic, though.

Right, back to the FIMFiction icon. I guess I'll wait for more votes.

While I wait for more votes on the FIMFiction favicon, I'd like to propose some icons for some other namespaces.

First off, the AwesomeMusic/ thread linked in the sandbox came up with this flaming note, which I'm not too fond of but conveys the namespace's meaning decently. I found a couple other music notes, but using them on their own would likely cause confusion with Music/. I'll try to make another "flaming note" picture soon.

As for LightNovel/, the only thing that came to me would be a word balloon - which is a little misleading, since light novels are obviously word-based, but I figured it could get across the brevity of the genre. This blank word balloon could work, but I prefer these two ones with dots in the middle, to show that it's a text-based medium.

I can't help but think a word balloon would conflict with Discussion's icon.

Also, it has occurred to me that we'll probably need one for SelfDemonstrating, too (for example).
