The pirates vs. knights episode of Deadliest Warrior was such bullshit, by the way.

Swordsman Troper — Reclaiming The Blade — WatchWell, maybe killing people could be 'heroic' or 'cool' if they had a noble cause or something. But they didn't. They were just armed robbers, as you say, killing people to steal from them. What's cool about that?
Be not afraid...The hats.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'Also, forced into the lifestyle and all that. I'm not going to glorify them in a general sense (although I'm sure some crews or individuals were excellent chaps indeed), but I can hardly blame them for being forced into service by their governments and then choosing the better option when given it.
Swordsman Troper — Reclaiming The Blade — WatchPirates are seen as cool because they represent the ultimate defiance of authority. They live fast and free, and depend only on their wits and their shipmates. Most people want that to some degree.
Also, they get wenches.
<><Weren't the hats just battered versions of the hats people wore in those days anyway?
Be not afraid...Yeah, but rendered cool by the batterage.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'The hats were pretty cool to begin with
Well excuuuuuuse me, Princess!Alright, cooler.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'Pirates actually very rarely killed. They were just blokes who got shafted by the government and tried to make a living.
Also, flintlock is the best sort of gun.

Always, somewhere, someone is fighting for you. As long as you remember them, you are not alone.edited 9th Jan '12 6:16:08 AM by EarlOfSandvich
I now go by Graf von Tirol. They don't want to upset the fundamentalist Christians here in America. That's also the reason why the American trailers cover up the fact that Charles Darwin is one of the main characters; there are people here who would gladly burn that guy at the stake if they could.
Looking for some stories?True, I didn't even notice it was Darwin until I noticed the trope page. This still seems sort of silly though.
Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.I feel like I'm the only one who actually likes Captain Dan and the Scurvy Crew. They've a new CD out, I gotta' snag a copy of it.
Oh yeah, now I also associates older pirates with scurvy.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.
Killing people doesn't preclude heroism or coolness. Given that their trade was essentially armed robbery at sea I think the heroism can safely be discounted.
Still cool, though.
