We're going to appoint people in each of the subforums to welcome newbies in by an automated PM and show them how things work in the particular subforum.
The appointment thing is so that at least one person knows it is their job, and so the newbie doesn't get buried under a PM onslaught the first time they post.
We will give the appointee (now called Heralds) a spiffy icon badge so people will know they are on the job for everybody. There will also be access to a report that shows who is new in the subforum.
If you want to apply for the position, all you have to do is post a welcome draft here. That way, a moderator will consider you. If someone else has already applied for the position, don't worry! Multiple people can apply for one subforum.
This is a list
of the heralds that have already been appointed and the subforums that still need heralds.

My first reaction to Forum Heralds was OH THIS LOOKS FUN LET ME TRY I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP OUT ON THESE FORUMS!! YAY!!!
After thinking about it, I realized I volunteered for what is possibly the least necessary job ever. I mean, a forum herald for other subforums, totally a good idea. But for a subforum that revolves around one thing, a thing that can be communicated through the most obvious of observation, with no changes... perhaps I should go take the less glamorous job of trying to make that subforum into something that would need a herald because it is so cool and active, instead of trying to show off to every one I'M HELPING!!!
Go play Kentucky Route Zero. Now.Jimmyman, maybe you could take it as your role of forum herald to make that forum cool and active.

I got my first response to the PM today...said poster had come back to the forum after being gone for a while before this system was implemented. I've got a feeling this is going to be the case for a lot of people.

Allow me this oppurtunity to introduce you to some threads:
- One of my favourite threads is where you admit you hilarious literature mistakes. Go on, and confess!
