I'm still sure the NR will be fine by the end of the trilogy. This isn't a franchise that does downers of that caliber - even the two darkest installments ended on a note of hope.

[up] Yeah, very much indeed. Me in particular, think the NR will be more or less WWII Britain in the war against the First Order.

But the Brits had an American ally who were able to provide thousands of tanks and warbirds, and millions of troops.

The the New Republic will have to provide all that herself.

I'd actually say the Resistance is more analogous to WW 2 era Britain, and the New Republic more like WW 2 era United States, with Hosnia being the New Republic's Pearl Harbor.

I would also say the New Republic right now would likely be the United States under the Articles of Confederation: the central government is essentially toothless due to revolutionary fears of them having too much power, while the states that make up the nation are too attached to their independence to want to give any of their power up.

Considering the asploded Chancellor was named after Chamberlain, interwar Britain was probably the direct inspiration.

It would have been nice to see some members of the NR government — a senator in the minority, a grizzled old admiral, a bureaucrat who has the information but not enough willing listeners — anyone, who actually takes Leia seriously. They made the NR too pathetic to start out, and I just hope they don't demonize the concept of "institutionalized good" in fetishizing rebellions and resistance movements. The problem I have is that, of the protagonists, none are loyal to the NR first.

I think something that might be worth mentioning here is that one of the early set photos released showed a group of opulently-dressed aliens, and I can't think of what they'd be other than Senators.

There's gonna be a sequence in The Last Jedi showing some Senate stuff going on, so I'm pretty optimistic about the Republic's "comeback", as it were.

Yeah we need to see something good of the republic for want, because right now the first order is also a resistence of sort so it become akward right now.

The First Order is actually closer to a resistance than the Resistance is. The group called the Resistance is more of a proxy force.

I think they moved past it, which is why they got into the open in the first place. The First Order has reportedly a highly advanced Military-Industrial Complex inside the Unknown Regions. And Rakata Prime.

It hasn't been confirmed yet, but there's strong evidence that suggests that Starkiller Base was Illum:

Both are icy planets that were rich with kyber crystals.

It was stated that during the reign of the Empire, the planet that would become Starkiller Base was mined for kyber crystals, some of which would end up as part of the Death Star's superlaser (something that also describes what happened with Illum).

It wasn't originally a mobile planet. It was converted into one.

This is the sort of thing I want to see in a future film — the New Republic Navy with a ton of big ships with big guns, for Epic Ship-on-Ship Action, with like a roving closeup shot of each cannon firing a la Wooden Ships and Iron Men, led by an old Father Neptune human admiral

Capital ship to capital ship combat is something that's there's surprisingly little of in Star Wars, I guess because in the end fighters have to do everything.

Meanwhile, fleets fighting fleets was the big saving grace of Star Wars Empire At War.

If Separatist drones aren't an option, then how will the New Republic be able to fight the First Order if the latter still outnumber and outgun the former?

TerminusEst from the Land of Winter and Stars Since: Feb, 2010

Because the latter does not.

The problem is the incredibly fragile political situation, which was inflamed by the numerous ex-Imperial agents, loyalists and First Order infiltrators (among Dark Side Adepts for all we know), and now with the Starkiller attack. The First Order is capitalising on it, as individual systems will be vulnerable and the NR+Resistance forces will be stretched.

Of course, you can just be lazy and say that the Force needs to stay in balance, so it will make sure the protagonists win in the end to avoid an excess of Dark.

It'll be interesting to see who has the resources edge now. On the one hand, the NR lost their capital and apparently a good chunk of their main fleet, but the FO lost their ace in the hole and likely had less resources to begin with.

I want to see the NR do something really bold against the First Order, like raid their main shipyard, burn a ton of their stuff, and capture a few of their ships, and have their rebuilding navy be led by a hammy Blood Knight admiral who's itching at the chance to kill as many neo-Imperials as possible. I want them to be badass, not the wimpy Straw Civilian faction we saw in VII.

I'm sure the movie will be content to ignore the logistics, but I feel like the loss of Starkiller Base should be absolutely crippling to the First Order. The sheer amount of resources it must have taken to convert a goddamn planet into a planet-killing interstellar missile launcher feels like it should be next to impossible to bounce back from when that launcher gets nuked the day after it's put into operation.

Starkiller feels like it should be an all-in superweapon. For the scrambling remnants of the Imperial Forces, it should be next to impossible to come back from this loss. Their leadership's intact, sure, but they should be filing bankruptcy tomorrow.
