In future films, I kind of want to see a stereotypical Corrupt Politician go on the path to becoming a Jedi. Like, a young Senator from Corellia is elected at age twenty-two because of a combination of family reputation, corporate donors, and his own genuine good looks and charm, but because of his youth, lack of self-control, and narcissism, he quickly starts abusing his power, mostly in the banal kind of way that typifies the governments we know, you know, accepting bribes, parroting the positions of lobbyists, participating in voting suppression tactics like having millions of people stricken from voting registries or helping to distribute voting machines that incorrectly report ballot data, etc. He does this not because he is Capital-E Evil, but because he doesn't really care, and if he can skim from the New Republic, so be it. Then he's arrested, and the New Republic is bringing him to Hosnian Prime for trial...and an hour before his ship jumps out of hyperspace, Starkiller Base destroys the system, and the ensuing disturbance in the Force awakens his own connection to it, which had previous made him a Charm Person and Lucky Bastard. With a direct connection to the ebb and flow of all life, and a window into the thoughts and emotions of trillions of people, he can no longer ignore the suffering of the masses and starts to rethink his life...

[up] That sounds awesome. Even if it never becomes official material, it's a really good idea for a fanfiction.

[up][up]Give him some comment about failed state of the republic and maybe a sexist coment about leia and Im sold.

"You don't cast an actress like Gwendoline Christie without expanding her character in the next movie in the trilogy. You just don't. That's just the waste of a good actress. So of course, with Phasma being a female villain in the new trilogy, of course Lucasfilm is gonna expand her character. That's just a given. Also, as I said for all we know, Boba Fett is still being digested in the Sarlacc Pit at this point."

Can you remind me what Gwendoline christie did in this movie? so much for them being smart.

And if EU retcon him, they can do this too, I mean they need world of god to said what happen to Phasma, that bad is what she got.

Why do we need that? More sexism, especially towards Leia is pretty much the last thing Star Wars needs.

Besides, if you're looking for more sexism towards Leia/Carrie Fisher, George Lucas and Richard Marquand have already got you covered. They both treated Carrie Fisher/ Leia's character like shit during the filming of Return of the Jedi.

[up]Because that sell the idea of a unlikable chararter who will suddenly deal fo what is really happen in the galaxy and the weight chararter like Luke,Leia and the other have to carry own, not taking about dark-light swich but and asshole who learn to have empathic as whole.

[up]That'd be too on the nose, in a Very Special Episode kind of way. Being sexist is a corny way of giving a character bad guy points.

No, I mean, someone who just doesn't care one way or the other, like someone who has a stereotypical "fuck politics!" attitude and ignores his duty while using the bnefits for his own enrichment, despite being an intelligent man. First Order? Resistance? Get him a kilo of your finest spice, some dancing girls, and a briefcase full of cash. Like I said, "apathy" is the keyword I was thinking of. Like, I'd want a character whose is like a one man embodiment of how frustrating it can be, looking from the outside, to have a self-indulgent narcissist who is actually Brilliant, but Lazy, despite thinking It's All About Me, that the galaxy is a Crapsack World, and that Might Makes Right. And then, turn it around and make such a character actually discover their own conscience.

Alden Ehrenreich (the guy from Hail Caesar) is our young Han Solo.

I'm surprised we're not talking more about that article about the Leia novel. Those are some pretty important backstory tidbits there.

but HOW?

I mean, the ones I'm concerned about (the state of the New Republic) are all decidedly negative and have been mulled over. The stuff about Ben and the state of Han and Leia's marriage (also negative, but eh, more peripheral) aren't really what I care about,

Haven't seen Hail Caesar but I dislike him less than a lot of the shortlist choices so I guess I'm OK with this.

"Gettysburg was a place of no real significance until two opposing armies, maneuvering blindly, ran smack into each other there."

Poor analogy. Gettysburg wasn't a distant wilderness cut off from contact with civilization. It was a typical small town in the heartland of the Union and within a few days march of major political and economic centers. It had a major railroad terminal, telegraphs, access to nation wide newspapers, etc.

Given that according to the phone app Star Wars Card Trader, Sarlaccs really do reproduce by spreading spores across the Galaxy and that it really takes a millennium for them to digest their food, then what would happen if a Sarlacc spore lands in planets like Coruscant, Naboo, or Hoth?

#11142: May 6th 2016 at 9:26:47 AM

It would probably be killed. The only two fully grown Sarlaccs in the old EU were on Tatooine and Dathomir, places without many inhabitants and out of the way. If one landed on Coruscant, there would probably be a biohazard team working to get rid of it.

Also, Hoth is inhospitable everywhere except on its equator. If the spore landed outside that zone, the sarlacc would die as a larva.

I feel like you can have an "unlikeable character having a redemption arc" without resorting to flat-out sexism. In fact, that's kind of a really cheap and easy way to try and make them "unlikeable."

BTW I just finished Bloodline and, it was really good.

Different author, man. Honestly, I hope Chuck Wendig doesn't do any more Star Wars.

Yeah Chuck Wendig wrote Aftermath. Claudia Gray wrote Bloodline. She also wrote Lost Stars, which I also quite liked.

Chuck Wendig isn't honestly a bad author.

[up][up] I wonder if the fact Lost Stars was so well received was part of why Claudia Grey got to write Bloodline.

I've been enjoying it so far, although I'm not finished. I just got to the part where One of Leia's political rivals finds out that she's Darth Vader's daughter, which is absolutely not public knowledge at this time.
