What's even more funny is that the documentary actually got the guy in question to interview - he talked about how, in his Dallas home, there was a grandfather clock across the bedroom from his bed. And that every night he stayed up and heard the clock tick tick tick and the bells chime 1 AM, 2 AM, counting until the next sunrise and the next deadline for his new batch of made-up reasons as to why he didn't have that $17 million (he had managed at that point to convince a Boston bank to loan him $80 million, and got the old owner to accept a 5-installment plan of $17 million). I think one time he managed to say that his bank in the UK (his forged bank statement stated he had large assets there) couldn't wire the money because it was closed for an emergency (it just happened to be the day of an IRA bombing).

And even more so, that he still could come off as sympathetic - it did seem like he actually wanted to help turn the team around a decade removed from their 4-year dynasty and the team did improve remarkable with both an excited fanbase and re-moralized team. When the fraud case broke out and the team went back to its old finance-focused owner, the team choked and missed the playoffs.
