Is it okay to post a link to my fanfiction profile here? I'm new in the forums so I have no idea where to go. If someone can help me, I'd appreciate it.

Yeah, sure. My profile is in my signature, and I've seen other fic-writing tropers do the same.

I'm tired of it. Cyber has been workin' more and more with 7th Librarian. 7th Librarian is a self-indulgent dream fulfiller who writes Mary Sues. This is odd when you consider how strict Cyber is when it comes to his writer's guidelines. Librarian is gettin' away with fuckin' murder. So I'm done with it.

If it's within TV Tropes, just put [[ at the start of your link, then put the page in CamelCase ThatLooksLikeThis, then a space and some text, and then close it with ]]. If it isn't in the mainspace (i.e., Main.Rule Of Cool), then you might need the relevant namespace for it, like Fanfic.Big Human On Campus or Awesome.Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.

If it's a link to another site, then you open and close the link in the same way, but where you'd put the article name in a TVT link, instead copy and paste the URL of the page in question.

Say, what do you guys think of Yu-Gi-Oh fics that center around an OC as a transfer student to Duel Academy, either alongside Jaden (whether or not they arrive at the same time of the school year) or replacing him entirely (as in, Jaden never existed; what that says about his past life and Yubel, I wouldn't know, except of the OC takes Jaden's place in that capacity too)?

[up] I like the concept of duel academies. The whole thing is self-contained and lends itself to a lot more structure than I feel like Battle City or Duelist Kingdom could have, and is competitive without having an overlarge aspect of eliminating losers. As for replacing Jaden wholesale or doing a straight-up GX fanwork, I think it's doable but requires either that you diverge the story or you give OC(s) more to do than "me too"ing at every major plot-point, as so often seems to happen.

I went a step further in my current project and made an entirely new academy, which is far from unique to the story (I even 'borrowed' the name of the academy from another fan-work) and still needs fuckloads of figuring out. I've already dropped two of the sacred beasts in the hands of my characters by the fifth chapter so I think GX lore is a little out of the question at this point.

But, yeah, academies are easy to work with and school environments have a very familiar dynamic that's easy to relate to. Good stuff.

Well, on another note, I'm trying to figure out a good name for an archetype that revolves around a succubus-like super-vampire witch (and related monsters that include relatives, servants, etc.) that's heavily inspired by the characters of Evangeline A.K. McDowell (the primary inspiration), Morrigan and Lilith Aensland, Arcueid Brunestud (and, to a lesser degree, her unseen, more powerful "sister" Altrouge), Moka Akashiya and Akasha Bloodriver, Mina Tepes, and Shinobu Oshino (as Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade).

So, I glanced over the earlier posts in the thread and quite a bit was made about the content of actual dueling in YGO fics. It bugs some people, other people just don't want to bother learning a really complex and often circuitously-ruled TCG, and that's all valid IMO.

My question, though, is this: if you're going to write out a duel, what's the best way to do it? Given the relative rarity of fics that actually incorporate it, I don't have many points of reference, and the most recent reading I've done was two really bad fics by the same author and the dueling scene posted by someone in this thread.

I think the most important part of the question is how often you should go into the numbers. That is, should you regularly give updates on who has how many life points or (as I do in my story) mark them down as they're gained or lost? How much detail should be gone into for each monster? I let everything related to card effects get explained by the characters - if an effect is relevant, they'll explain it, but I leave the specifics of levels and attack values to moments when they're most pertinent. I've seen it done where someone will give a quick rundown on a monster's level and A/D values in parentheses when the monster is summoned, and again whenever those values change for the monster, but that seems clunky to me.

To an extent, I figure that giving the full names and a sufficient description of each card as it's used is good enough. Players can look the cards up themselves, if they really want to know the numbers and the exact effects of each, is my thinking. I also only mention the life-point counters when they change, and helpfully put the numbers in bold for if a reader has to skim back and check how much everyone has later. That's the thing I'm most iffy on, and I might go back and edit them so that there's exact LP values during certain breaks.

As an aside, if you do actually play the game it makes planning out a fic a lot of fun. Once you've got a character established, figuring out a deck for them is a really fun study of the character and their personality. Then it helps to play it a couple of times (I use Dueling Network, since it's browser based and people are less likely to use the current meta) to get a feel for how it works, and then you're in a good position to figure out how a duel between two characters would work. The recent duel in my fic between Ivana and Zheng was really interesting because getting Ivana on top took a bit of thinking, and I'm afraid it came off too cheaply because it hinged on one of them being really stupid or careless.

Kim's Ojama deck is one of my oldest and most favorite, and Kim is consequently one of my oldest and most favorite character concepts so it felt right for her to have it, even though she's only playing a bit part in the story. I'm afraid I might be missing out on lots of Ojama antics by doing that, but I'll find reasons for her to pop up later.

I'll just shamelessly post my own yugioh fic. It's relatively new, but it's good if you don't mind suggestive language being thrown around like Kaiba's BEWD.

Name: Yugioh XL by 0bs1d1an-kn1ght

Summary: taking place 20 years after the events of 5D's, the Akamine House of Cards was heisted by three criminals, who made way with three cards. Daisuke Akamine, the CEO, hires five recruits to hunt down the stolen cards.

Please feel free to read and review! (sorry, I'm a bit of an attention whore)

Would you guys think of me as weird for shipping Asuka with Shou? Despite her obvious attraction to him, I can't really bring myself to like the idea of having her and Juudai as a couple; Juudai with Rei, however, is another story.
