Pulled, apparently without discussion: Manic Pixie Dream Girl

A couple of days ago the page image was pulled and the page tagged to take things to Image Pickin - without referencing a discussion that had it pulled(and I can't find one, either). Should we look for a new image or are we fine restoring the pulled one?

Not an example though Haruhi is not Kyon's girlfriend. Manic Pixie Dream Girl is a (shallow) Girlfriend usually very outgoing, kinky, the perfect wild Girlfriend, think Catherine from Catherine. Kyon and Haruhi is Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl not this

According to the guy who named it,*

it's "that bubbly, shallow cinematic creature that exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures."

The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Yeah, I don't believe the girl friend angle is actually necessary to the trope as originally defines. It's girl who takes dude and shifts his life by making this kuh-razy

I think this site has just about enough Haruhi pictures.

Now, it may be debated whether that's a good enough argument against the picture in question...

[up] If that were the case, there works that would be FAR ahead in getting their pics pulled. Warhammer 40 K, Magic The Gathering and The Simpsons to name just three.

Honestly, the only image I know from this anime on the site is this one and Genki Girl (which was changed). Admitably I've never watched the show, so there might be more I just don't recognize.

According to the link on the page, she is the self-demonstrating picture on Just A Face And A Caption (the actual page), but other then that, I'm unaware of it being a big issue.

All anime looks alike to me, though, so it could be more common then I think. But overall I think there's much bigger offenders in the "too many pictures" category.

Let's see, Necktie Leash, Some Kind of Force Field, Emotionless Girl used to have one, Moe, anime's entry on Deadpan Snarker... I'm sure there's more.

But yeah, I'd call it Hype Backlash mixed with a bit of infamy and the standard "no weeaboo shit" response. Yeah, in comparison to, say Warhammer 40 K, Mahou Sensei Negima, Avatar The Last Airbender, Order Of The Stick, or any other popular work, it's a reasonable amount of pictures.

As for the picture fitting the trope, the whole "girlfriend" thing is a possibility (not to mention it's implied in canon, not that they'd admit it), and the quote Catalogue posted sums up Haruhi quite nicely.

Anyone who assigns themselves loads of character tropes is someone to be worried about.

The whole Shallow Love Interest aspect has been axed. It was a part of the term as it was originally explained by the person who came up with it, but it was clearly just an opinion an not part of the definition, so the trope is just about a beautiful, hyperactive, quirky girl who pulls the ordinary guy out of his boring life by introducing him to a world of fun (or the kuh-razy).

The image is fine, whether or not you like the work and find it overused (I for one find Order of the Stick overused, but you don't see me pulling those images right and left), doesn't matter.

If the image fits the trope and is a good image, then keep it, regardless of biased feelings.

The Haruhi example is admittedly a slightly unorthodox one in that Haruhi is a tsundere towards Kyon rather than openly attracted to him, but it's a straight enough example nevertheless that I wouldn't even consider it played with as such. The fundamentals are all there: Kyon at the start of the series definitely falls under the description of 'cynical guy prone to melancholic observation who's basically given up on finding the fun in life', whilst as for Haruhi? Let's see. Beautiful? Check. Cloudcuckoolander? Check. Genki Girl? Used to be the trope image, definitely check. Somewhat childish personality with a disregard for certain more petty laws like, oh I don't know, stealing and invasion of privacy? Check, particularly prior to Character Development. Most importantly of all, transports the aforementioned guy into a world of zaniness he'd long since abandoned hope of finding to exist? Check, check, definitely check. She even succeeds in forcing the implied Character Development on Kyon of having him cut loose and just live a little, as she does. Definitely an example.

Besides, the original objection was that she's not overtly romantically interested in him. For all their protestations otherwise, they still seem to be the series' Official Couple. But even if you don't buy a romantic angle to their relationship (which most would considered a pretty serious case of Anti Goggles, but hey), it still fits the fundamental character of the trope in that, whether it's romantic or not, Haruhi is repeatedly and explicitly stated to have an overriding, inexplicable interest in Kyon; Hell, it's the driving factor behind most of what happens in the first book, nevermind any of the ones that come afterwards. Definitely an example of this trope.

(Indeed, if the example is at all played with, it's really that at the same time as playing it straight, they ALSO managed to invert it, since much as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's Simon actually inspired Kamina just as much as the latter inspired him, so too at the beginning of the Suzumiya Haruhi series had Haruhi lost a lot of her own drive to get the most out of life; it was Kyon who revitalised her, gave her a new direction, in inadvertently inspiring her to form the SOS Brigade.)

MORE IMPORTANTLY THAN ALL THAT, the trope image fits perfectly. Beautiful Genki Girl drags obvious Straight Man by his tie into a world of colour and wackiness. What more can you want?

Osric, that's not how it works around here. Images must work in such a way that the average people (who wouldn't have known all the subtleties you provided) can get it instantly. Those arguments about personalities etc. count for precisely nothing if they're not directly illustrated in the image.
