I likely won't bother to see the sequel as I didn't like the original.

You know, I'm wondering how much money this film will make considering how incredibly polarizing the first movie was. Although, I guess there's always Bile Fascination or something that like that.

I seriously can't think of any clever joke.

Fail movie was fail movie. I wasnt even that impressed by the grapichs (or however it is spelt in cinema terms). Then again my dad is easily impressioned by those stuff so I was forced to see this pile of crap...

On the other way I HIGHLY doubt than they can actually make it worse than 1, its just hardly possible.

A sequel eh? Seeing as how I liked the first one well enough(though I'll admit I've only see it once) I'll be sure to see the new one at some point when its out. Don't really care if Quaritch comes back, didn't really like his character, badass though he was.

Seriously, and I feel alone in this, but the first movie IMO isn't NEARLY as bad as the haters seem to make it. Yes, it's plot is cliched, but there are PLENTY of other movies with far worse or far more cliched plots, and at least Avatar tells its somewhat formulaic story well. Seeing as most of the haters came in AFTER the first movie became the highest grossing film of all time, I feel the main reason of all the hate is merely Hype Backlash. In fact, it's so hated now, I would even call Avatar underrated. Yes, I said it. UNDE Rrated.

This is my first post here, but I've been a lurker at TV Tropes for a while. And it saddens me that a movie like Avatar gets so much flak that it doesn't deserve. I liked it. I always have. I like in 2D at my home as much as I liked it in 3D at the IMAX theater. And I will be among the first in line for its sequel.

I don't feel the movie is a masterpiece but I really think all the bashing and hate it gets is undeserved. It sets out to tell a certain story and it does it well. You can argue that the plot is cliched but be honest. How original is Star Wars? Not very, yet that is considered one of the greatest fictional works of the modern age.

I will only watch it if Quaritch comes back. Cliche as it is to say, he was honestly the only thing that made the movie even REMOTELY watchable for me

As far as I'm concerned, Episode IV is ten times as original as Avatar. Yes, it's a riff on Flash Gordon, but there's more originality there than most people realize these days due to Seinfeld Is Unfunny.

@Kostya

I dislike Avatar. I also dislike Star Wars. Both movies have fantastic special effects and were revolutionary in that regard. Both also had pretty bad stories in my opinion.

@Extreme

There's just as many, if not more, people who loved Avatar than people who hate it (as evidenced by the huge box office returns). The internet tends to have more haters though.

One main difference too is that Avatar actively made all human characters sympathetic and three dimensional, but still used Humans Are Bastards without irony. Quaritch was depicted as a career soldier there to do a job, but he attacked the home tree without real provocation just because he is the bad guy of this story.

Star Wars, on the other hand, uses Black-and-White Morality so that Tarkin ordering the destruction of Alderaan was to remind us that The Empire was truly evil and irredeemable.

[up][up]If you think the internet moves towards the haters DON'T go onto the Avatar fan forums...those people scare me.

Personally I like the movie, its a cliche storm of a movie sure, but the story is at least "well" told, and in the end its an enjoyable enough film. Is it "teh best thing eva" like some people think? Hell no. But its not the steaming pile of crap a good amount of the haters make it out to be. Hey at least its not as bad as the Prequels.

I will be seeing this when it comes out....Quaritch would only make it better.

Yeah I saw Avatar in theaters and while the story wasn't groundbreaking it was an enjoyable experience. I certainly got my money's worth in my opinion.

And it has Colonel Quaritch.

Didn't he have to retcon things in T2 to get the plot to work, though?

I don't mind him having to retcon Avatar to come up with a different plot for Avatar 2 if that plot is good. I don't think he really retconned much of Terminator 1 beyond the stable time loop aspect which had never really been set in stone.

I watched Avatar for the MiniMecha and StarWar for the Lightsaber. So Yeah, if we get more awesome Mech action and less Space Smurf in the sequel then they have my ticket, if not meh.

I ended up seeing it twice. When I visited my aunt in England she didn't know I had seen it before and surprised me with a pair of tickets. Considering that I saw it in 2d with french and german subtitles the first time in Switzerland, it wasn't a waste of time. I wasn't bored by watching it twice, so I place it at the 'fun but not anything special' category. Although, Mamma Mia goes in there and so does Speed Racer, so whatever.

@KJ, I'd be hesistant to say that any of the characters were three-dimensional. Some had some development, but most of them were simply anonymous, even people like Norm.

.... now remind me what theme park this ride will be constructed in?

Now tell me if the two are the same?

No?

[up][up] External properties in the Disney Theme Parks is nothing new.

Problem is Avatar is being shoved into a park it doesn't belong in at all and Disney's not taking into account how short-lived it's popularity will be. Already, it's faded into becoming mostly a joke about it's unoriginal story and it's awful fanbase.

Lightcycle coaster is apparently in the works for Shanghai Disney. Still, Tron really should be brought into the US parks.
