The problem isn't so much listening to it as knowing things about it. I've never really bothered to devote much personal attention towards music - I listen to it on the radio and in other 'public' ways, but it's not like I ever bought CDs. So the end result is that I can probably sing along with (or at least hum) dozens of songs without knowing anything about their artists, their genres, or even, in some cases, their titles.

This is probably off-topic, though.

I don't see that it is off-topic...and as to your statement, Google and Wiki Pedia are your friends.

Suenyaverse characters:

Cora likes classic rock, as well as jazz. She's an especial fan of Queen, and her nerdier side enjoys They Might Be Giants a lot. She's also got an abiding love for The Beatles, but who doesn't?

Jasper doesn't know a lot about our world's music, but he likes almost everything he's heard so far. There is absolutely nothing in his world that sounds remotely like techno or dubstep, so that's what fascinates him the most.

Danbarre knows even less, so he just sticks to his world's well-known music. We would say it's folky, and sounds like a mashup of Celtic and flamenco. He likes a good fiddler.

Mariselle, on the other hand, prefers slow, graceful waltzes, and anything that lets her dance lithely. Thanks to Cora, she's also taken a liking to David Bowie.

Angeline does not listen to much music. Mostly, she just listens to whatever Paud listens to.

Paud likes quirky, upbeat stuff, the genre Suenyans call "Wave-step"—we would say it sounds a bit like ska mixed with calypso, with more orchestral instrumentation.

Wordkeepers characters (because they're actually from this world)

Nick is an alt rocker at heart. Being an outcast, he identifies with the themes in a lot of alt rock, and some punk, too. Secretly enjoys cheesy pop music, but would never admit it.

Ran loves 80's music, disco, Motown, funk... anything with chunky synths, or wahwahs, and that infectiously catchy danceability. She's also a big fan of video game music of all stripes, and her favorite game series musicwise is the Jet Set Radio series. (Also useful because it fits the series' vague timeline, which is only described as "Sometime post-millennial.")

Apollo enjoys just about everything, really. Skimming his computer playlist will reveal that he does have a proclivity towards power ballads and Heavy Mythril, but you'll catch him singing along with just about anything. And you will want to catch him, believe me.

Alex just kind of surfs along with whatever's popular. He is what some might describe as a "Top 40 whore." However, he has an interest in indie hip-hop and does enjoy classic rap. Loves to catch Nick secretly dancing along with whatever blonde is currently on the radio.

The new, nameless project:

Rudy is a big nerd rock guy. Anything big with geeks, he loves it. TMBG, Jonathan Coulton, Dragon Force, you name it. But his favorite musician of all time is actually Harry Belafonte, of all things. He's also an Elvis fan. Anything that makes him think of tropical islands.

Helen is also a nerd rocker, but she's also a HUGE showtunes fan. Anything from musicals makes her happy. Her favorite's Chicago, if you're interested. This sort of extends to soundtracks in general, and any really good orchestral pieces (not necessarily classical).

Django is vaguely aware that music exists as a concept, but he doesn't really pay attention to it. He doesn't pay attention to a lot of things, actually.

Fatima likes country. And if you dare suggest that it's not real music, or make that joke about playing country music backwards, or even think about suggesting that there is something wrong with liking "Achey Breaky Heart," she will punch you.

I'm one of those people who can't write without music playing in the background, so music is very important to writing to me. And I love to describe the background music in places like cars, buses, or stores, as part of setting the mood in a place, or just as a quick shoutout to an artist I like.

And in the case of Rudy from the New Nameless Project, music is actually very important to his character, so I did put a lot of thought into it as part of his character development.

I have music that I associate with the character because of the lyrics or melody, not so much as to whether they'd listen to it. However, I'd imagine that:

  • Therro: Classical. Also those songs that incorporate Latin Chanting.
  • Mal: Metal, and alternative metal.
  • Amerith: Metal and Symphonic Metal.
  • Charity: Techno, as well as jazz.
  • Sayf: Alternative rock, and jazz.
  • Prospero: Swing.
  • Absidy: Korean Pop.

Mustang is a black pegasus who is obsessed with fitting in. If he were in the human world, he would pretend to be only interested in pop music. He's not picky, and will listen to just about anything. However, what he really likes is a special kind of depressing, absurdist rock and metal, especially the progressive sort. The sort where the singer is always stuck in a tired, jaded falsetto. He would certainly adore the pillows.

You know, it's funny — I've always associated my characters with theme songs, but never really thought about what they'd listen to. So, let's see what I can do...

  • Deias: Strange that one of the first characters I ever made (going on thirteen years!) is someone giving me so much trouble on the subject...I imagine that given the choice (and in spite of his character), he'd listen to some nice, chilled-out songs. Easy listening, or something like it. Maybe like By the Time I Get to Phoenix.
  • Ocelot V: Being a child of the nineties (quite literally, thanks to his story being set in the period), and given his boisterous personality, I'd say he'd prefer something that gets him hyped. Officially his theme song is Stan Bush's The Touch, but he might be listening to songs like Guerrilla Radio.
  • Raiz: Both his story and his character are considerably darker than the above two, so I imagine that he likes songs with a bit more of a bite to them. Technically he likes all music by virtue of listening to whatever he gets his hands on, but Testin' Me by Doujah Raze seems right up his alley.
