The focus seems to be on dogs in not just the title, but the description itself. Are examples where animal shelters are portrayed as prisons for other animals examples of the trope too?

I ask this partly because I think this scene from Bolt would provide a more convincing page image, namely one involving Mittens in the cage, especially one showing her upset facial expression. (Which is somewhat comparable to those of the prisoners in some scenes from The Shawshank Redemption.)

I do think that the trope allows for other animals besides dogs, and there should probably be a line or two in the description that notes that. But as far as whether Mittens should be the trope picture or not, that's more a matter for Image Pickin'.

The scene from 1:45 makes a good page image (Mittens, alone behind bars (almost crying, even), row of other cells in the background).

More on topic, the Example as a Thesis needs to go.

->In the world of movies, the pound is basically a jail for dogs, only every animal is on death row and being someone's bitch isn't such a bad thing. —>- D. Mc Callum of Cracked, from this article.

Figured I'd suggest that for the page quotation now that the image pickin thread is underway.

Why not just a quick rename to Pounds Are Pet Prison? Even has some Added Alliterative Appeal.

"Pet" prison only makes sense if these shelters are exclusively for pets. Otherwise I'd suggest going with the less alliterative but more descriptive "pounds are animal prison." (Also, its first and last words start with the letter p, and the words in between start with the letter a, so that's a pattern all its own.)

Anyway, what about my page quotation suggestion?

Honestly, I think people will understand that "Pet Prison" doesn't just mean pets. In fact, I think they'd get it if we kept the name as is—"doggy" just being a stand-in for all animals. If we must change, I vote for Pounds Are Pet Prison for clarity, so we don't have to change wicks too much, and the Added Alliterative Appeal.

Thanks for the all fish!

Let's check for potholes with things like Pounds Are Kitty Prisons like what happens with You Gotta Have Blue Hair.

I don't see a need for drastic change, but Pounds are Pet Prison works.

Pounds Are Doggy Prison found in: 27 articles, excluding discussions.

This title has brought 18 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.

I think that a rename is definitely feasible given this relatively small amount of usage. I like the Pounds Are Pet Prison option too since I believe that it is rather clear and I agree with Ronka 87 about people probably understanding the point of the trope anyway.

Besides, this trope often/usually comes up in the "pet runs away or gets lost, and gets picked up by Animal Control" context anyway.

Meh, I do not have much problem with Pounds Are Pet Prison, really. I just prefer Pounds Are Animal Prison, but pet seems good enough if consensus favours it.

Anyway, what do people here think of my page quotation suggestion?

Pounds Are Animal Prison sounds good.

Actually, since "pounds" is a plural word, perhaps Pounds Are Animal Prisons or The Pound Is Animal Prison might be better.

I like Pounds Are Pet Prisons better than Pounds Are Animal Prisons because of the Added Alliterative Appeal and because the trope is really about domesticated animals. How many times does this trope come up about something like a porcupine or a raccoon?

neoYTPism Since: May, 2010

[up] Perhaps someone had a pet porcupine. In any case, not all cats and dogs are former pets themselves either.

And neither title is alliterative; the alliteration of Pounds Are Pet Prison is broken by the word "are."

Alliteration doesn't actually require all words to begin with the same letter, just most of them.

I agree that the animal isn't necessarily a pet/former pet, but it is almost always a "pet type" of animal. Dogs, cats, the occasional pet bird...

Sledgehammer time. How did I do? Removed Example as a Thesis, less emphasis on dogs specifically, mentioned "Diabolical Dog Catcher" a few times.

Stratadrake,

I think you did a good job. The trope description seems a lot clearer to me now. I suppose it could be trimmed a bit more to not talk as much about real life animal shelters, but your mileage may vary on that. I do not think more edits are necessary.

So are we switching the title with the Pounds Are Pet Prison, or not? If not, this can be closed.

Is there misuse? Or (I suppose more likely in this case), indications that it's being underused for non-dogs?
