Off the top of my head?

Paper Mario: The Temple of the Sun and Memoirs of a Master were both really good. Been meaning to get back to rereading Crowns of the Kingdom too, as I recall that being good but a bit too heavy on my teenage mind.

Another one I've been reading is "One by One". I consider it one of the best Undertale fics I've ever read.

I think there is some worth and charm in fanfiction if nothing there are some new ideas for old stories(of course there is a lot of bad and trashy fics in there as well) Now for recs:-Zeno No Kyuubi:In the Mind of a Scientist-Harry Potter is a mad scientist going throught Hogwards and The Chronicles of Harry Holmes Harry is influenced by S.Holmes books wants to be a c.detective and goes throught the canon story -Potter Who and the Wossname's Thingummy by Forrest UUID-Doctor Who\Harry Potter-amnesiac 11th doctor is in Harry Potter's body-where science and magic collide -October by The Carnivorous Muffin-,,It is not paradox to rewrite history, in the breath of a single moment a universe blooms into existence as another path fades from view, Tom Riddle meets an aberration on the train to Hogwarts and the rest is in flux. AU,time travel, Death!Harry'' -Shinji and the Doctor by machiavelli-Shinji Ikari finds himself being mentored by the greatest English teacher in the multiverse.(EVA/DW) Just some i think are pretty good(it just my opinion)

Any Zelda fan needs to check out the excellent remake of Majora's Mask. It's a complete overhaul of the original game and adds a lot more personality to the characters. A fair bit of warning though, it is novel quality yes, but it has the length to boot. 81 chapters to be exact. All of them are damn lengthy, too. I'm only on chapter 16 and I haven't read it in awhile, though.

Lots of authors focus on either "Elsa as Superhero" or "Elsa as Politician," but this story does the best job that I've ever seen of balancing both at the same time.

Firefly / 10th Doctor X-over: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanFic/TheManWithNoName

These series are perfect for each other, and the psychological analysis of the different characters was absolutely brilliant.

The most well-written ... that's rather hard to decide, there are so many.

I am rather fond of The Unexpected, a The Hobbit fanfic, on the grounds of it dealing with the issue of sexual assault in a sensitive way. Unlike literature that deals with such stuff, it is not entirely about the aftermath of rape, but ... well, follows the storyline of the original.

Rosario Vampire: Brightest Darkness, Soul Eater: Troubled Souls, and Fire Emblem Awakening: Invisible Ties are three good, if long, examples I've read.

For Undertale, One by One is amazing. Go read it. https://archiveofourown.org/works/4942816?view_full_work=true Also look at The Scientist series, still being updated every month. https://archiveofourown.org/series/365588

HPMOR I find overrated as an actual story, for many of the reasons listed here: https://danluu.com/su3su2u1/hpmor/ However, if you ignore the technobabble, the author tract and the plot devices, it's definitely well written and funny.

I earned an English degree and tell you flat out that defining Great Literature is hard, subjective, and controversial. Personally, I have a double standard for anything I read and consider worth it, fanfiction or formally published. Great Fiction: it's well written, contains characters that make me care and feel, has plot that holds together and advances smoothly. Great Literature: everything already listed, elegant writing, wit, and a certain something that is not easily defined but you know it when you read it. It somehow addresses universal human experience and makes you think about it. In other words, I consider one a potato chip and the other a luxurious balanced meal. Both options are enjoyable and can be quite well done but they fill different purposes and needs. I'd happily write an essay on the latter and recommend the former. For me, I'm happy to read the potato chip book once but return again and again to the exceptional literary meal.

For instance, I love all the Teen Wolf stories by Guede, available on AO 3, and read everything they write. I don't, however, think of them as great literature. They're unique, well written, hysterical, moving, quirky, and awesome. I highly recommend them. Same fandom but different author, Xiaq's The Adventures of Mage Kid and Wolf Boy, make me think Literature. They are flat out enjoyable adventures but have the extra depth and style that makes them linger memorably. Xiaq effortlessly makes me think about prejudice and the difference between being human and being humane all while being delighted by the story, dialogue, and characters themselves. Fantastic writers and series within the same fandom but different responses evoked. It's all a matter of taste really.

Finding Dad by Team-Phin is the most well-written first-person POV fic of all time, especially how it transitions between scenes narrated by Phineas and those narrated by Isabella.

I think now would be a good time for me to share my two favourite slash fics - Regular Show: August and Flesh and Blood. They have to be the most well-written male/male fics I've ever read, as while the romance is the focal point in both stories, they also each contain a plot besides "these two male characters develop feelings for each other". The relationships presented are realistic and in-character, and subvert most romance novel tropes. Both fics have their own individual merits too - August is great because it places a good amount of focus on all the other characters too, not just Mordecai and Rigby, whereas Flesh and Blood, despite being a fic focused on the Sasori x Deidara ship, successfully avoids putting either of them in leather pants without making their relationship an unhealthy one.

Most slash fics are shit, yes, but these are the two gems I've managed to find, and I'm so glad I did. Honestly, I could gush about these fics all day tongue

I'm surprised Fisherman's Knot wasn't on here. One of the best [[redirect:Gravity Falls]] fanfics I have ever read. The characters aren't OOC, the OC is amazing, and it protests mental illness in an incredibly realistic manner. More sensitive tropers should mind the tags though, since it deals heavily with suicide. (Sorry the link won't work, I'm a trope fetus)

Guide Me Home; it's so simple yet so beautifully written, and it fits well into canon that I consider it the true explanation as to what the heck happened to Zuko's mother throughout Avatar: The Last Airbender.

https://www.fimfiction.net/story/81844/oskar-osker-true-omnivore (I don't know how to make hyperlinks)

Oskar Osäker: True Omnivore is a prototype 2 and My little pony crossover. It is the first in a four part series. (Currently in a short hiatus before book 5) It kicks off with Oskar a Cadre Evolved who indirectly betrayed Alex Mercer and helped lead to the latter's demise. During the final events of prototype 2 Oskar sees Mercer's demise and unexpectedly finds himself in a forest. In Equestria. He witnesses the defeat of nightmare moon and keeps a low profile as he slowly integrates himself into Equestria's society. He slowly befriends Twilight Sparkle and we get to see how each my little pony episode is different from the original with just the inclusion of a single voice of reason from a very cynical and paranoid person. And each action holds far reaching consequences. Oskar is a well written OC. He is a little overpowered and becomes much stronger but there is always a challenge over the horizon. And he has flaws and faults and quirks that add up to make a realistic character.

One more good series (in my opinion) is Seven Days in Sunny June. It takes place in a more real world version of The Equestria Girls movie. We follow Sunset Shimmer as she has to work to get everyone to stop hating her because she only just recently stopped bullying everyone. And She winds up being adopted by the human Twilight Sparkles family. It is well paced and very interesting, but can get a bit dark at times. ( there was a huge incident with a super date rape drug). It is also good about things that happen in the beginning having repercussions later on. For both series you do not have to know the source material. The first does a fantastic job of explaining Prototype and introduces many other world building elements (such as the league of element benders from Avatar the last airbender, it is explained in a way that seems plausible) And An interesting subplot that bookmarks the stories about Astral Lords who just sit around and watch other peoples lives and interfering to make things interesting (such as sending a biological viral supervising to a land of friendly pastel colored ponies.) And Seven Days in Sunny June is in the same story universe as A hairy problem (about applejack becoming a werewolf and a black magic unicorn who is the reason the two series are connected.) And A hairier problem: rise of the turn all (a sequel). Not necessary until the second book and only because of one character.

Anyway there is also Fallout Equestria. Which has a very interesting world with plenty of action and my favorite group of words ever conceived. However be warned. It is Loooong. But well worth it. (Doesn't require any knowledge of Fallout or my little pony. Everything is self contained.and well explained. Though fans of fallout will (probably) be impressed with the depth of the adaptation of Fallout 3.

And that's my two cents. -beast5200

Mine is probably It Feels More Like A Memory from the Hamilton fandom. The story's really complex and well-written. Just a heads-up though, it's long. I don't know how long an average fic is, but this one has 116,000+ words. Link: http://archiveofourown.org/works/5456225/chapters/12613484

The most well written fanfiction I ever read is Delenda Est from Lord Silvere (Harry Potter) It's epic and is well thought through. Also, it's complete and has a great and not rushed ending. It is my all time favorite.

Would like to add Pokémon: Nova and Antica to my list now. It's a young, ongoing story and looks to be real promising with some great characterization.

HPMOR was the most impactful fanfic as of now, it showed me that some fanfics deserves to be read. But the most well written is Mass Effect: Human Revolution. While it's primary crossover of Mass Effect and Deus Ex, it includes a lot of elements of other sources, like really lot. Good thing is, and a testament to author's writing skills, you don't need to know anything about any of these universe, to make reading enjoyable. Second best is Dungeon Keeper Amy, Sailor Moon X Dungeon Keeper. Almost everything from Dungeon Keeper side is original, characters, lore, world mechanincs. And by God, this Amy is really smart with what resources she has.

Eeesh. Gonna have to be a tie between arrogantemu's Splintered Light (https://archiveofourown.org/series/304197) and this one (https://archiveofourown.org/works/3762373/chapters/8355241), which is a really interesting post-Lo TR fic with Faramir.

The most well written fanfic... Hmm... as of now, a short 20k words Marvel Comics piece. The fic is in Spanish, but it seems really promising to me (I don't know if the author will continue it, though).

MCU: Uncompromising Principles by Kizmet http://download.archiveofourown.org/works/6930922

A brilliant and realistic look at the consequences of the Avengers' actions across the movie. I consider it better than canon.

Mortal Kombat: In Your Shadow by One Shot Revolt

A story about Kuai Lang trying to save his brother from the Netherealm's corruption. Has influences of Dante's Inferno.

Other awesome YGO fics: Loaded Bones, Deserted Distractions, Glass, and pretty much anything tagged on Tumblr.
