Personally, I think we should go with a scene from a movie. My votes:

Titanic

From Here to Eternity

The Sixth Sense

Risky Business

Basic Instinct

The Seven Year Itch

[up][up] The Titanic example and The Seven Year Itch looks the most promising of those, although Star Wars and Psycho would work better.

From Here To Eternity wouldn't work because I think we're already using that picture.

[up][up][up]That works too, I think.

Aaand I still don't get why people don't think JAFAAC applies here. 'Familiarity of a work' doesn't necessarily mean 'having seen the work'. I have, as mentioned, not seen Psycho. I recognize the image because I have a familiarity with the work anyway (I know what the work is, I know it contains a scene like that, and I know that scene is very famous). Someone who doesn't have familiarity with Psycho - like, say, myself a few years ago - wouldn't find an image of the scene informative about the trope at all.

This isn't about assuming that Viewers Are Morons, but about not assuming that everyone who frequents tvtropes shares the most common frame of reference.

Also, I have never before seen the 'risky business' or 'big piano' scenes.

Just want to pitch in that I can never recognise the Psycho scene when it's in a still image. Yes, if it's a whole scene reference I can probably recognise it, but just a picture of a woman in a shower or a shadowed guy with a knife doesn't make me think of it at all.

@Artistic Platypus: JAFAAC aside, I think it is acceptable to take a leap of faith and presume that Popcultural Osmosis Failure will only happen, say, once every 10000 views?

Think about this: The image is a little teaser to draw the reader in. They would see the picture, and then would go towards the examples to see it in detail. That way, a reader gets hooked and continues reading.

It's a dilemma. Should we show an actual example, which may be JAFFAC, or do we do a picture that just references an example, in place of actually showing an example, like the Hamlet comic?

We could do the third option and leave the page image-less, but that isn't desirable when the trope is picturable.

Again, I think people worry about these things too much, but this is only my opinion.

The Seven Year Itch image is currently in use on two other pages: the page for the movie itself and the page for Marilyn Maneuver

Bump...maybe a collage with a scene from a movie, one from a TV show, and one from something animated?

So Psycho, TV usage (Or just the psycho remake) and a screen from a higher Rez of this?

[up] Hmmmm...well, for the animated, the scene that was on my mind at the time was from The Lion King when the baboon was holding Simba in the air at the start of the movie. I was thinking three separate works rather than three interpretations of one scene, but I'd like to see what you can do with your idea.

That works too... I just have that scene I dont have access to the others.

For Really Iconic ones I was thinking Live Action or 2, Western Animation and Animation on the other side of the world. To point out that its so iconic that its Global.

Go for it.

The Psycho one is fine, but how about the "I am your father" scene from The Empire Strikes Back? (I don't want to use this one because a very close variation of it is already on the Luke, I Am Your Father page.)

I like [up] that one. I also like the E.T. moon shot one.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

I think there are more iconic scenes than the Psycho one, I checked the link The Dead Mans Life posted on post 23, and some of my favorites are the moon shot, long live the king and King Kong at the top of the Empire State, I also like the "I am your father" and "I'm the king of the world", and I think there are many others.

However my favorite is this:

Say hello to his little friend

Oh, I've changed my mind, King Kong is the best one.
