Sweet. Seemed like he was making progress already; that's icing on the cake.

Okay, I'm going to try writing out this comment entirely using the new voice thing in Google Docs. unfortunately I can't do it directly, but I can type it out into a document and then copy/paste the results over to here later. I'm watching the words come up as I speak and I'm surprised how accurate it is. I'm not sure why that unfortunately up there wasn't capitalized, but that seems to be the only glitch so far. I'm not correcting anything that comes out, I'm just doing whatever it is. see, that sentence up there was an example of me not knowing what to say before I actually spoke. the transcription is accurate, but my wording sucks when I say it out loud. I wonder what's not capitalizing words anymore? honestly, this paragraph might not be very impressive in the sense of good writing, but that's just because I'm saying things randomly and without much thought to ward pacing or sentence structure. really, I'm very very impressed. will it capitalized TV Tropes? wow, it did! Now why won't it capitalize the first word of each sentence? well, it did there. but not there. anyway, this is getting long.

I'm legitimately impressed by how well that worked too. I think the majority of my surprise comes from my one friend trying to write using his cell phone voice-to-text maybe somewhere in the neighbourhood of a year ago and about one in every three words was either wrong or malformed. Well played, Google. Well played.

That's... very good voice recognition for a free app. Aside from the capitalization issues, it looks really good.

Something that gives him severe cramps in his hand, I think?

Something that happened in his hand. He's not crippled or anything, but there is a strain that could cripple his hands for life if he pushes them too hard. This left him completely unable to work as well. The only thing he does have is his voice so he's gonna go take voice lessons and maybe see about becoming a radio talker or something like that.

That sounds like the Justine expansion for Amnesia The Dark Descent.

That would actually make a good horror thing, I bet xD

Though in Justine it was less "ghosts" and more "crazy disfigured people".

You ever wind up reading through something that you realize is mediocre to utter crap but not only catch up but wind up tracking it, just out of curiosity?

[up]No; in that case I usually look up spoilers somewhere on the internet.

That's what I did when I got tired of Game of Thrones not going anywhere after 5 seasons :P

Well, 20K words of ponyfic and clicking the tracking button are much less of a time investment for me than a DVD binge.tongue

Reading a plot summary on a wiki or in the story comments is even less of a time investment tongue

True, but with something that long, it's likely someone will have commented on it.

My point was, I would never waste 20k words of reading on a mediocre entertainment experience. A few mildly interesting plot points can't be worth the other problems, not when there's so much other entertainment I could fill my time with.

Well, for my own part I read on the train ride to work. So while I personally prefer novels - because they're easier to read even if they do kinda fuck my arm up - if I found an e-reader that worked for me I could easily see myself reading something fairly 'meh' just for the sake of having something to read if I was ever between books. Hell, even with novels. I'm reading the Monster Blood Tattoo series right now, and while there's good stuff in there, boy Clever, if you thought I could go on for a while without having anything relevant happen...

Actually, lots of modern novelists do that. They fart around for ages. There's plenty of different reasons, but I think that the two main ones are A) they don't know how to write better, and B) a lot of people like that sort of faffing about because they use books to fill time (like you wink).

That's one reason I read a lot of short story collections in additions to books. I recently checked out some Asimov collections from my library; each book is about the size of a short novel/novella, but each individual story is a lot easier to read in a single sitting.

[up][up] What are you looking for in an ereader? I personally use a Kindle Voyage which I think is excellent in every respect, but it's also the most expensive option so I wouldn't immediately recommend it.

In this case a lot of it is because the world is pretty enormous, and fairly unique, and the author likes to go into the various nitty-gritty elements. Like, there are long tangents and suchlike about thing like, say, how some monsters hunters get specially-grown organs transplanted to give them superpowers, which then require a daily dose of special potions and medicines to keep the body from rejecting the organs. He also spends what probably amounts to a fair wordcount just defining various things mentioned, like calling gunwomen Spendonettes. He even starts each chapter with a dictionary-styled definition of some word that's going to crop up that chapter, important or not. One of them was the definition of a poor man's wallet made from the skin of a rat.

The tangents and worldbuilding I don't mind, even enjoy to a degree. When there's a 3-chapter divergence to show the main character spending his day off in the city and getting invited to what seems to amount to a bear-baiting club, though, it's difficult not to wonder if the author is going somewhere with it or if he just got distracted.

[up]In truth I haven't done much looking, as I saw some e-readers when they first came out and found them kind of straining on the eyes. My phone works for short bursts, but when I leave work at midnight there can be as long as a 10 minute wait for the train and the ride itself takes a good 15 minutes, so that's not really an option.
