Shardik by Richard Adams is probably the best book I've ever read, but it's a bit depressing. Grass by Sheri S. Tepper is excellent New Wave science fiction with some very alien aliens, if that's something you'd be interested in. You might also try the other Adams, Douglas Adams, and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.
