[up]The main continuity. It is the other way around. You can say Shinji become less of a loser in some continuities, but not the opposite.

That is what (s)he said. Evangelion continuity is a Venn diagram; what does it matter which is the main universe?

He said that Shinji don't become less of a loser in some continuities, which is the opposite of what I posted. While this is technically correct, it is far from being the best way to phrase it and it is certainly a dickisih thing to be nit picking. When people talk about Evangelion, without further addendum, they are talking about the anime and/or, it sequel/interquel/something movie. They are certainly not talking about the infinity of alternate Eva continuities.

Therefore, Nyarly's statement, "Simon overcomes his loser-ness, while Shinji doesn't", is not incorrect, and nit picking it is unnecessary and meaningless.

Very well, you have a point if it's just the anime we're talking about. And I have to admit, at least it's still fairly consistent when it comes to retellings and alternate continuity. Could be worse.

[up][up]He's probably talking about Rebuild of Evangelion 2.0, which ends on a very TTGL-esqe note except for the fact that he's basically ending the world as we know it.

Meh, those 'eva clones' are not very eva-like. I remember a Play Station One game Xenogears being accused of ripping of NGE with all the robots, religious symbolism and psychology but when I played it... yeah, there were some similar things but the main focus was much different (Xenogears was for the most of time focused on political conflict, at least before the budget caught it). Also, LOL at TTGL being called an Eva ripoff. I'd say it's an homage to the whole history of mecha anime (and anime as a whole) + it's not serious or deconstructive

And because both are from Gainax. That's important, especially since TTGL is pretty much the opposite of Eva.

What relevance is there that Gurren Lagann is a Gainax show, really? The key Evangelion people (Anno and the like) had moved to Khara ever since they started working on the Rebuild movies.

the reason EVA and Betterman get compared to themselves sometimes is because they are both "bio-horror" shows. However, I would say Betterman has a lot more in common with Guyver than anything, and even that would be a stretch. Betterman is actually arguably more confusing than EVA is if you don't know much about biology. In fact, it doesn't help matters that Algernon is not really explained until the end, and even then, a lot of it is left up to the viewers interpretation, reading the novel Flowers For Algernon helps, but it's still something you have to theorize on your own. which is why I think I like Betterman more than EVA, You kinda have to approach it like an old sci-fi serial, it.....kinda depends on you thinking about it.

as an aside, I heard someone in Real Life call Guyver an EVA clone..... there is so much wrong with that statement I don't know where to start.

Hmm, is EVA really is the first series to use a empathy fueled, pilot synchronized mecha? I find it to be an extremely brilliant idea.

[up][up][up] In itself, it probably doesn't matter much. However, Eva is Gainax' most (in)famous work. When people think of Gainax, they often think of Eva at the same time. Comparisons are inevitable.

Some works inspired NGE so you might want to check 'em. Serial Experiments Lain and Space Runaway Ideon come to mind.

^^^ The titular Escaflowne is one, for spoilerrific reasons. But I think Tenkuu no Escaflowne came out after Eva. Ditto Gundam Wing and the Wing Zero and Epyon suits, though I'm les sure of the timeline on that show.

I know that the Newtypes in UC Gundam have psychic abilities that let them pilot better, but that's not quite the same thing.

[up][up]Eva is inspired by Ideon but not by Lain. Lain is newer than Eva.

Aura Battler Dunbine uses something similar, as the pilots have been called because they possess a particular kind of energy that makes the mechs work better.

Not really. For one thing, Eva doesn't get remotely confusing until near the end, while Lain is creepy and confusing the entire way through. Eva is also combat oriented, which also makes the tone completely different. And Lain doesn't have as much character focus. The stories as a whole are pretty much completely different, in fact, the only major similarity being characters trying to become immortal, which is hardly unique to those two at all. So all in all I doubt that Lain was really inspired by Evangelion.

Eva doesn't get remotely confusing until near the end

That's not really accurate. There's all sorts of unexplained references flying around throughout the entire series. It's just that it's only towards the end that this starts interfering with the ability to understand the main plot

some are taking inspiration from eva, some are downright just trying the same formula

for instance, avatar the last airbender takes a queue from eva [1] and tries to directly reference it. This is not a clone.

Tengan toppa takes from the mecha genre as a whole and adds to it, simply not leaving eva out. This is not a clone

Aquarion, Attack on Titan, Eureka, and somewhat Haruhi are eva clones in the odder sense that they take from eva, without really giving it credit. They try to pull off what Hideaki Anno did with a very similar formula. then they try to pull it off as original.

Something like Darker than Black however, more so cites eva, making refrences to it. its very aware it takes from eva and openly displays it to the public. This is something else Tengen toppa and FLCL do, but in a better way that isnt trying to claim it all its own.

Eva deserves a spot on WholePlotReference not to mention tv tropes needs to update its understanding of deconstruction, but that's another matter entirely.
