[up]It doesn't count as apostasy, if that's what you're worried about. What would count is overtly proclaiming that they're not forbidden/taboo, since that goes into the territory of tahlil al-haram (i.e. permitting the forbidden), which is solely the domain of Allah/God.

Anything "deeper" than that, I'm afraid you'd have to ask a cleric/scholar.

Polish Muslims during the period of the First Commonweath explained that they can drink everything but wine openly since vodka and beer is not mentioned in Q'ran, supposedly. Bolder ones claimed that they can drink wine under the shadow of trees since Allah won't see that they drink.

I'd say that Polish Islam has been influenced to some extent by Christianity, there is no taboo of depicting people in local Muslim culture. Portraits of deceased on tombstones are common. Apart of that, Polish Muslims are more or less Sunni, though in their teachings they seem to emphasise on recognizing links between Islam, Christianity and Judaism.

6 days ago religious authorities of Muslims in Poland condemned implementation of sharia law in Europe and Muslims who employ violence to spread their religion. Mainly in response to fringe groups of the right wing who spread propaganda that all Muslims are terrorists. They announced they wouldn't allow for Muslims to gather in Pulawy for annual meeting, but thankfully nothing happened.

While Polish Muslims are the bulk of Muslim community, even recent immigrants are assimilated to Polish culture because of the pressure of Muslims of Polish ethnicity. Those who convert to Islam here are mostly Poles, so our Muslim community is going to stay mostly Polish even if more Muslims immigrate from other countries.

@Sabian: Hmm, what did people expect to be my religion?

Huh, late reply or what? Still better late than never.

Honestly, I didn't really picture anything for you religion-wise. It's just a shock because I just wasn't expecting anything at all. As for other tropers, I can't speak for them. Better ask for yourself.

Hm. Is it okay for a non-Muslim to eat halal meat? I understand that the raising and killing of animals is much more humane than in the general meat industry, so if it's okay then it could be a good alternative for people who dislike the meat industry but don't want to go vegetarian (though it would require cutting out pork).

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.

I beg to differ that ritual killing of cattle is any more humane than what mass industry does. Slicing open throats is certainly less humane than what individual farmer in my country usually does: hit them in the head when they don't see it coming so they die unaware of it, and thus meat is more tender and tastier. That's what my step-father does because we're breeding Belgian Giants (huge species of rabbits, FYI) for our own needs.

You do realize that a proper throat-slicing leads to a very swift death from exsanguination due to the brain being rapidly deprived of blood supply, right? That said, there is a lot of controversy on the issue.

[up]But not that done in my country, in which big companies reap profits from ritual killing. Mass scale ritual killing is guaranteed to be botched.

Hey, uh, Not muslim, or interested, but I just found this at my town's boat ramp. I recognized the arabic script, figured it was a koran. long an short of it, found it on the ground there, kind of torn up and it didn't feel right to throw it out so I just picked up the pieces and put em on a bench.

I was going to post this to my facebook wall so the Muslims I know would see it, but wanted to know if you guys thought anyone would take it the wrong way.

@telcantar- Well alot of non-Jews eat Kosher food for health reasons. It's the same idea really.

IMO there is no significant differences when it comes to health benefits between regular non-fast food diet and halal/kosher diets. Most crucial thing about diet is whether they are eaten regularly.

[up][up][up] AFAIK, standard practice in cases where the physical copy of the quran is so damaged that it's non-salvageable is to have it "wrapped in a cloth and stored indefinitely in a safe place, buried in a mosque or a Muslim cemetery, or burned and the ashes buried or scattered over water" (quote from Wikipedia).

this one had the front cover ripped off, and the back cover missing completely. Looked like at least a portion of the back pages were gone to. Not quite "un-salvageable", but certainly "in need of repair". A muslim friend of mine went and got it though so it's taken care of.

It looked like a fairly old copy too. regardless of what it was about, I like old books, and it was a very nice looking book, so it'd have been a shame to just leave it out there.

You farm rabbits Katsura? My mom went to a rabbit farm once on a trip with her fiends when she was in college.

Yes, I farm rabbits. However, I'd rather pick one of those big rabbits to keep him/her at home rather the small rabbit bought for my sister. I can pet them freely, while the small rabbit is a menace. The downside is that I would need a pen rather than cage to keep him/her. They grow up to the size of a Collie.

So, what does anyone think about the, idk what to call it, mass construction of new buildings in Mecca? Especially the clock face tower across the street from the Kaabah. I heard they've actually destroyed important archaeological sites in the process

You heard correctly. IINM the old castle on the mountain overlooking the Grand Mosque, which was used by the Ottoman governors way back when, is gone. And I've yet to meet a fellow commoner who approves of such destruction.

What you may not have heard, however, is that this whole construction plan also came with what amounts to invoking eminent domain en masse on a large number of housings near the Mosque, evicting the inhabitants, and only giving them trivial "compensation" for their loss of residence (made worse by the increasingly excessive prices of real estate these days; only about a third of the total population owns their own house, the rest being forced to rent, which also doesn't come cheap at all, even for the lowest-quality apartments).
