Yes... YES YES OH BY FREYA'S SWEET ASS, YES!!!
I must say, if it weren't for SF Debris I'd have ignored RD.
I'm a skeptical squirrelMy whole family loves Red Dwarf; stepdad has the whole series up to 8 on DVD.
I admit my only exposure is through SF Debris, but I don't get the appeal, either.
mudshark: I don't expect Nate to make sense, really.YES! YES!
Although to be honest, Back To Earth sucked. But I hope this will be better.

Smoke me a kipper!
Under World. It rocks! You should all try to read some of the books Rob Grant have written (Fat and Incompetence). If you liked Red Dwarf, you'll love these.
Incompetence is about a detective trying to solve a murder spree in a Dystopian Europe. The problem is everyone is shit at their job apart from the killer and the detective. He's Dangerously Genre-Savvy, and the detective must take Genre Savvy Up To Eleven in order to catch him.
Fat is about three people in modern day London, handling the different approaches to obesity. One guy is very fat, one girl is anorexic and another is a PR man. It's very funny, very satirical and just smells of Red Dwarf.
Inspirational quote against powerful image of nature. As long as it isn't like the series set after everyone got reconstructed, where they were in the brig. That was awful.
By the powers invested in me by tabloid-reading imbeciles, I pronounce you guilty of paedophilia! It wasn't that bad... *cringes expectantly*
I mean it wasn't wonderful, but then it was just continuing the previous series' decay towards potty humour. If you ignore that, and can forgive the incredibly cheesy special effects, it was quite a refreshing change. Plus Rimmer came back (yay) and the new partners-in-crime dynamic between him and Lister (and the other dwarfers, though less) worked well.
But yeah, I'd rather they just ignored Series VIII. Or — wait! They never showed us what happened after Only the Good! Oh gods, now I want 2012 to be tomorrow. This is the first time I've ever wished to be older.
Now why the smeg is the nearest thread on the show way down there?
Just watched a good bit of Red Dwarf lately. As for hearing about the new series coming up, I do look forward to it, though a bit cautiously given how VII and VIII went (tbh, I recall them being a mixed bag).
I now go by Graf von Tirol.YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
I liked series 7, but series 8 was awful.

And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)We seem to have the same avatars.
How embarrassing.
Yeah. VII definitely has great moments (for instance, I'm rather fond of Stoke Me a Clipper), though it's a different turn from the superior first six series. VIII I remember the least, though it does have its moments too. I remember that there is quite a bit of filler there that may as well just smeg off! A return to straight-up sitcom roots seemed like a good idea, but the problem is it failed to deliver the way the first two series did.

I now go by Graf von Tirol.I liked Series VIII, but that might be because it's the first series I watched. It's more consistent in quality than the other seasons, which wildly veered between sitcom-in-Lister's-bedroom (hilarious) and space-things-not-aliens-are-attacking (somewhat less interesting). There were definitely some good sci-fi concepts in episodes like the one where Red Dwarf gets triplicated, but the real comedy came from those scenes where Lister and Rimmer just sat and talked.
Back To Earth Part 1 was good for the same reasons. The other parts were a bit too meta for my liking.
Would I watch a new series? Hell, yeah.
"Steel wins battles. Gold wins wars."I tried to watch Back to Earth. I really did. Then I realised it didn't live up to the last episode of Classic Red Dwarf which ended with, "is that the end, the Smeg it is."
I liked Back To Earth. I enjoyed the metaness of it.
Excellent!
...Now how did this thread get buried for a year?
Proud member of the IAA What's the point of being grown up if you can't act childish?A bad season of Red Dwarf is still better than 95% of what's on TV right now. Smoke me a kipper, get me some vindaloo and a drink from the distributor because I'm definitely watching this.
I know this: if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me.Rewatched Back to Earth. I liked it before, but on a rewatch, it's much better than I remember. Series 8 (7 less so, but it has its moments) has grown on me too. Looking forward to the new series.
Awwwwwwwwwwwww, yeah.
'All he needs is for somebody to throw handgrenades at him for the rest of his life...'So - anyone else been watching the Red Dwarf marathon on Dave?
And let us pray that come it may (As come it will for a' that)Wow.....they are so fat and old. Kryten looks terrible.
Dumbo
The new series of Red Dwarf has officially been confirmed. Ok, we had Back to Earth, but that was more a sort of special mindscrewy treat — this time it's a series (Series X), it's got six episodes (my goodness), and it's official. Chris Barrie, Craig Charles, Danny Johns-Jules and Robert Llewellyn are in it, of course, and there's also a possibility that Holly might come back (hopefully with Norman Lovett in tow) and even, god help us, the Talkie Toaster.
Full official announcement: http://reddwarf.co.uk/news/2011/04/15/new-series-of-red-dwarf-confirmed/ Did I mention? It's official (yay)!
*puts on the Hat of Squee* OHMYGODTHEY'REREALLYCOMINGBACK eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee *takes off hat* officially! *puts on hat* eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
