Hi, so... I'm not British, but I'm coming here from the tvtropes ARG (The Wall Will Fall), and we really need a favour from a troper near Portsmouth with a smartphone.
If someone could just get near The Old Customs House (Vernon Building, Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth, Hampshire PO 1 3TY) and scan it with a free smartphone app and send us the link, the metaverse will be forever in your debt. If we don't get this in time, one of our characters may try to kill me. :(
Please? I hope I can count on my fellow tropers!

THE THREAD NECROMANCER COMETH
Born in Cumbria, moved to a tiny island off the coast of Scotland when I was a wee lad. If you;re wondering whether that makes me Scottish or English, the correct answer is "neither".
Tastes better on the way back down.NW England here.
This may seem out of the blue, but I was just wondering something and I wasn't sure where to ask.
What does a "Mid-Atlantic" accent sound like to you? The first time you hear someone like Frasier or Rarity from My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, where do you guess they're from?
The first time I heard one, not being familiar with many British accents, I just assumed it was British. It seems like a lot of Americans get that impression. Does it sound American to you guys?
Do you have any particular links to specific characters (that aren't from MLP; I would rather jam forks in my eyes than voluntarily watch a clip from that)?
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars. Here's a random clip from Frasier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylJ5PP3W9zQ
Both Frasier and Niles (the two shown seated at the beginning) supposedly have that accent.

: Go jam those fecking forks in your eyes, disbeliever!
But yeah, to me Rarity sounds neither British nor American. She's literally from the middle of the Atlantic (and not from Saint Helena).
Tastes better on the way back down.I see. So it does have the intended effect.
I think the only reason I thought it sounded British was that As Long as It Sounds Foreign was in effect (that's probably the reason why so many of us can't distinguish between a British and Australian accent). In the years since I first heard that accent, I've watched a lot more British shows and become slightly more familiar with what some real British accents sound like, so I'm a little better at hearing the difference between that and a Mid-Atlantic accent.

Sounds like a posh American accent to me.
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.I guess technically, that's what it is. Anyways, thanks for the answers, you two.
I was born in the United States, and my parents were United States citizens, but when I was like a year old or so we moved to the British Isles. I loved it there. I spent most of my life there until like 2000 or so, when I moved back. I was never able to develop an accent though. It made me really sad.
Oh, this thread.
Huh.
Well.
EDGBASTON, HO
...umm. Bu'min'um.
I've lived in Stockport for my entire life (It's just south of Manchester); While my 'entire life' is indeed only fifteen years, I've never even moved house. I can quite literally see the building I was born in from my window.
There are worse places than Greater Manchester to be rooted in, friend.

Schild und Schwert der ParteiI was born and raised in the South East of London
Southampton boy here, born and raised.
simple asI'm from Basingstoke. Yay.
That's where my dad works.
simple asI'm originally from Britain, but according to quite a few comedy shows, am now living in a different country. Not really. I am based in Leigh, Lancashire. I might move to St.Helens or Wigan, due to the transport links to Liverpool (where most of my friends are) being bad here.

Keeper of The Celestial FlameIt is up to one man from a major port city to revive this thread.
simple asI didn't even realise we had a thread for us.
I didn't grow up here though, so sometimes the pride feels hollow.
I'm from Gibraltar, but currently live in America.

"Sounds like a posh American accent to me. "
Probably the point: Frasier spent a long time in Boston and with his snobbishness, he'd have cultivated a Boston Brahmin accent, if only to survive and move in the right circles. (I bet he'd have striven to lose anything lower-class and Seattle he got from his father...) it's telling that Charles Winchester in MASH (who IS from the most rarefied upmarket Boston stock) looks, talks and sounds EXACTLY like Frasier... very upper-class American in a society that denies it has social distinctions at all...
West Glamorgan.
The part where I live is polluted to fuck, anyway.
