Discussion

Or Neon Genesis Shinji Fucked Up.

Since I'm in the habit of reviving dead RP subjects, here's my go at Evangelion.

3rd Impact happened 15 years ago. Lilith was true to her words; those who wished to return could do so. They had no memory of their time in the hivemind, but the sudden surplus of Orange Tang, a black moon in the sky and the sudden reduction of the world population to 1.5 billion led to a lot of questions.

The UN officially disbanded Nerv and published everything in an effort to save face. As it happened, the world sort of needed a well organized world wide task force so the organization remained but many top staff members were forced to resign.

The climate change and the second moon, have made the high tide much higher, engulfing many former cities. The southern hemisphere, already damaged from the second impact, poorly reconstructed and left to suffer the third, has been more or less abandoned by anyone with the means to leave.

However Humanity struggles on. Canada and Russia are the world's two foremost economic superpowers, with much of their former inhospitable icy areas now defrosted.

The United States suffered a great deal and is now comparable economically to our present day Mexico due to constant natural disaster. FEMA has only recently relinquished martial law. However the United States remains a military power to be reckoned with.

Continental Europe has more or less united under the EU, both in need of aid and in fear of Russian Expansionism with Germany holding centre stage. The Nordic League retain independence and like Russia and Canada, prosper.

China has suffered somewhat from the climate change but due to a large and resilient population, harsh government and expansionist policy, they have managed to hold a strong sway over world affairs. Japan is more or less underwater, and what little remained was assimilated by China, along with Korea, Mongolia and whatever inhabitable remains of India and the middle East they could reach.

The Eva Program is now in the hands of UNAACO [yew-na-co, United Nations Anti-Angel Coalition Organization] An with 30 Units currently in production. Russia and The United States are the only states which have not completely left Eva production to the UN. The US has continued the Jet Alone Program, with 6 operational units, known as Jet I Is. Russia has 9 Functioning Eva units salvaged from Japan, and a mysterious Rupedo Corporation supplying pilots, which they brag do not suffer from the same limitations of regular pilots.

[DATA EXPUNGED]

Angels have been rising up once more. Weak and scattered though they may be, rebuilding efforts in the southern hemisphere have been seriously hindered. Evas have since been mass produced and candidates lined up. The unfortunate part is that they still haven't gotten around the Orphan bit, so there is a great deal of protest regarding it. The First Generation Pilots, now in their thirties, are finally looking forward to a well earned retirement but things are never that simple.

You are one of these new pilots in Tokyo-4, aged 14-15 or 29-30. You are humanity's first and last best hope.

For Combat and Syncing I'll be 1d6 system.

1 is critical failure, 2 is failure, 3 is narrow success, 4 is regular success, 5 is great success and 6 is overshot. Specializing in a weapon/ability removes the overshot feature.

Character Sheets:

  • Name:
  • Gender:
  • Background: These are optional but recommended Templates:
    • UN volunteer: You're 14-15 and were taken in by the UN after being orphaned. They've given you a fairly regular life but have recently revealed that you're a candidate in the new EVA program, which is still fairly shrouded in rumour and myth. You can be from anywhere, though you most likely grew up in Europe or North America. This is probably the most flexible and what I hope to be the most common template.
    • Rupedo Corp: You are 14-15. You a product of the Russian Military created to compete with the ever expanding UN programs. You cannot sync with EV As as easily but you can pilot any EVA. You are not sure of your nature beyond the fact that you are utterly replacable. In fact, you have likely been replaced before. [Average Sync Rate. Cannot Berserk or Die.]
    • Jaded Vet: You are 29-30. You have been fighting angels since these kids were in diapers. You are probably Japanese, might have even gone to class with Ikari. You've been assigned to stick around and guide these whippersnappers until they look like something resembling a fighting force. [Lower Sync Rate, Better Weapon Usage. Ironically this makes them more offensive]
    • American Soldier: You are 30-18. You don't have any of their fancy Evas, but your Jet II can do the job. Sure, it relies on Prog Knives and special equipment but it doesn't cause apocalypses either. Remember, it wasn't so long ago that the US was still on top and you haven't given up on the dream quite yet. [No Sync rates or AT field]
  • Physical Description:
  • Backstory:
  • Family:
  • Residence:
  • Job: [1st Gen, 2nd Gen Pilot, Anything else has to be cleared by me]
  • Life Skills:
  • Combat Skills: Choose one of the following:
    • Marksman: Specializes in Ranged Weapons.
    • Knifefighter: Specialized in melee weapons. Especially Prog Knives.
    • Beserker: Rather than getting KO'd, the EVA enters berserk mode.
    • Improved AT Field: Harder to Penetrate AT field.
    • Improved Sync Ratio: Less chance of failure or overshoot with Syncing under psychological stress.

I'm thinking of joining this.

Will much knowledge of Evangelion be needed?

Because I have little to none in that regard.

Not if you play the Naive new comer type.

Only rule is that you're character lost his/her biological mother.

Huh, this looks interesting.

If I have time I may salvage my pilot character from Opnerf's dead Evangelion RP and sign up.

Not sure how much time I'll have, though, so is it possible to reserve a 2nd gen pilot marksman for now?

[up] No problem at all. Fair warning though; the Standard Battle Rifle is fairly useless in standard combat still. With the Marksman bonus you can expect to keep them pinned down but until speciality weapons come into play, you'll mostly be laying down cover fire for climatic melee combat.

Also, excellent taste in Avatar.

[up][up] Not at all. I can PM you options or you can send me what you want and I can tell you how to make it work.

I seem to remember an Eva-sized sniper rifle Unit-0 uses in one episode. Of course, it was about as useful as the assault rifle, but hey, its something different evil grin

In all seriousnes, though, thats fine. It seems likely there'll be a lot of people signing up as melee specialists or berserkers, so a bit of variety is needed. Besides, it's also likely that the angels won't just let me stand back and shoot anyway >=)

Also, thanks grin Sami FTW.

The Sniper might be there, but there's not been many improvements [If I recall it caused mass blackouts] so if it does pop up, it'll be one of the focal point speciality weapons against one or two angels but not a regular weapon.

Actually, I was refering to this one. According to a wiki article I found, it shows up in two episodes and is completely useless in both tongue

But yeah, the great big positron rifle would be a special focus weapon, definitely.

@ Roman: The Evangelion goes from a normal piloted giant robot into this (spoilers for anyone who intends to ever watch the original series).

Basicaly, the pilot looses all control and the Eva acts like a berserk animal, suddenly ignoring its usual 5-minute battery life limit.

@Gaunt: I thought I recalled that after posting. The Sniper is probably an option and slightly more useful, but neither can really do much against an AT field. If it doesn't have a shield though [or another EVA has breached it], you should be able to wreak havoc fairly easily.

[up][up] Basically if your EVA gets KO'd, there's a chance that rather than simply being out of the fight [or dead], you'll Berserk. This basically gives you really high health and forces the enemy to either retreat or pin you down [after a while, the mode will wear off].

On the other hand, it has a lot of risks, for you can't control it and it may attack allies. Secondly it requires high sync rates and boosts them even higher, which can lead to... er, bad stuff. Think Call of Cthulu bad.

Also! I posted up some roles for characters. Hopefully this gives people a bit more of an idea of what the options are, since it allows for more than Fresh Faced Pilot like the original sign up sheet may have implied.

Also, to all the newcomers: I highly recommend picking a neurosis to RP for your character. Have it start out fairly mild if you wish but be ready to let it either worse or improve depending on how the RP goes.

I hate to be the n00b here, but what might sync rate affect? I noticed that with the clip gaunt linked it went to 400%... Is it something like if Sync < 100%, the mech suffers, but the greater the sync the faster the neurosis grows or some penalty?

Also, any neurosis that are off-limits, or case-by case basis for now?

From what Faux's told me, A low Sync Ratio means you can't control your Eva well, and a high Sync Ratio is bad for your sanity.

Baicly, yeah, what redead said.

The sync rate tells you how well the pilot's brain is synced up with the Eva. Too low, and its hard to get it to move. If its too high it means their brain is too well synchronised with the Eva, which makes bad things happen. Something called "mental contamination" that I don't remember ever hearing an explanation for, but is rather bad for your mental health tongue.

In the show, that 400% sync rate resulted in shinji having his body absorbed by the eva.

I'mnot sure how Faux will be implementing this in the game, though.

Basically what I mailed Re Dead; Low means you can't move. Too high means you either start snapping or eventually, you merge with the Eva.

There's probably going to be a base score which is how much you've generally synced with the Eva and a temporary score symbolizing stuff the stuff that is powered by stress.

The base score Is basically how bonded to the Eva you are over all. It controls your ability to Berserk. It is generally safe so long as it stays relatively low.

Temporary can be increased in stressful moment but getting it very high would require a character to be pretty messed up.

The Total controls your AT field. 100% is good. 200% is really powerful but seriously taxing on mental health. 400% is merging.

AT fields/Sync ratio are sort of the biggest mechanic and I'm still toying with what they do a little but this is probably the best summary of what they'll be able to do at first.

Most likely: Base score is sort of like leveling up. Probably goes up about or down by about 5-10%ish each battle depending on how you want to move it. Marksmen are safe with low sync rates, Beserkers should risk higher ones. A dice is rolled initially, each number representing a ten percent increase. Except overshoot. During battle under stress, Players can choose to power up the AT field [Another dice, this time +20 for each number but a 1 or 2 decreases rather than increases], but obviously if it hits over a hundred bad things happen [ill defined, I'd probably just ask you to RP really freaking out].

Damn, this is intense. Gotta say I'm looking forward to how this turns out...! One last (hopefully) question however. According to the above, the "American Soldiers" have no AT field or Sync rate, but rather relies on prog knives and "special equipment." Any words on what this is, or is it Hidden Fun Stuff?

I agree, this is sounding really interesting. I have a small question, though - what happened to the UK? Also, by residence, do you mean where they lived before being recruited by UNAACO, or do we make up somewhere for them to live in BC?

@ Roman: Prog knives are Vibro Weapon combat knives scaled up for giant robots.

England kinda maybe sank. Just a little [At least London and several other major cities]. Along with Ireland, Most of Northern Europe [Holland, Denmark, a great deal of coastal Europe is underwater. Japan and huge chunks of China and Australia are also sea now. The world map over all is pretty different.

Germany just happened to be best off after 2nd Impact and were able to move their capital to Munich. The countries least changed by all of this is probably Spain, Austria and Belarus, the latter of which has been absorbed into Russia.

[up][up] Most combat in the show was AT field to AT field, Jet Alones are US prototypes [Technically Japan designed, but that's sort of a moot issue] designed to compete with the Eva but they never figured out how to replicate it [It's Powered by a Forsaken Child], so instead they have powerful robots that don't pull on sanity and don't have any nasty surprises [even the Scientists who ran the project didn't really know what the Eva was] but also lacks the AT field and well... nasty surprises. Again, the reason for giant Robots is because nothing will penetrate an AT field except an AT field, so it would be best as the Marksman and focusing on pinning down and laying down suppressive fire or wresting with the Angels since even if they can't break the shields, they can certainly stall and/or hold them. Special weaponry would be huge guns, especially positron weaponry [Which can break AT fields but is huge, takes a lot of prep time and a direct powerline] or tactical weaponry designed to counter a specific angel or just a shield.

Alright, I'm gonna put my name down for this. I don't know how much time I will be able to get off for it, but it definitely has deep amounts of potential. Now...

  • Name: Steve Bird
  • Gender: Male
  • Background: American Soldier
  • Backstory: An American soldier who was drafted at 17, he was rather off-put by the giant mechas that were Jet Alones and Evas in particular. He had seen the angel attacks like everyone else, but there were things about those robots that just made his stomache turn. So when he entered a simulator and found that he scored near top marks in his group, he grudgingly joined the corps and was trained in the Jet Alone. Now at 22 he pilots his Jet Alone, nervous to die against the unknown enemy yet still wishing to prove himself amongst this group of foreigners.
  • Physical Description: Short black hair, with narrow grey eyes and a large, slanted nose.
  • Family: Greg Thompson [Grandfather], Stephanie Bird [Mother], Emily Bird [Sister, 9]
  • Residence: Kentucky
  • Job: American Soldier
  • Life Skills: Basic Soldier Training,
  • Combat Skills: Marksman
  • Friends: He considers anyone willing to fight the angels a friend, although his nervous disposition may have this change drastically.
  • Enemies: Ed Bird [Father, disowned]

Is this alright? I sort of feel I went overboard with the family a tad, but I want your judgement in case I went wrong somewhere else first.

It works but here are three things:

You're on an exchange program with Canada, serving UN forces in a show of co-operation and in exchange for aid. You should be arriving just at the start of the RP.

Next; First and Second Gen Pilot deal is only for Eva pilots, it doesn't really apply to the Jet Alone Pilots.

Finally, I'm not sure about one thing though; on the show the Jet was powered by an AI. I'm happy enough to hand wave them reproducing it with a pilot in direct control in order to avert what happened on the show. But it leaves you the options as either piloting inside a nuclear powered giant robot or piloting from the UN base remotely. The main difference would be that piloting inside is a lot more awesome but also dangerous.

Hmmm, So arriving by the start of the RP, you mean me and my family will be just moving in by the beginning? Alright.

As for the job, I'll just change that to "American Soldier" then.

As for the AI issue, I sorta picked the Americans since it seemed to me that the Americans would be a Self-Imposed Challenge to play as, what with guns being near worthless and the specialized weaponry seemingly Awesome, but Impractical. How about the option for both is available? As for my character personally, I am going to have him strapped into the nuclear reactor itself. Fun times will be had.

Also since it is nuclear powered, will the 5 minute limit apply?

Five Minute Limit will not apply. There will instead by a One Hundred and Fifty day limit in effect. I know it is harsh, but I think you can manage it.

The options for both will be available. You're not adventurers, so the gear is govt. issued, not bought. You'll be given whatever you need before a mission

Also, after rereading my post I dont think I was clear. When I meant the option for both, I meant for the Jet Alone to be either remote controlled or manually operated by the players.
