Depends on the helmet. Some of the ones in Infinity Blade, for example, are ugly as sin, and should be taken out back and slagged. Some are sexy as sin and should be put on a pedestal and sold for real money.
Dragon Age had the right idea with letting you hide the helmet from sight but keep the stat bonus if you liked the stats but didn't like how the damn thing looks =)

Videogames do not make you a worse person... Than you already are. Most of the time, I hate helmets, especially face-concealing ones. If they're part of an armor set that I'm wearing that looks big and heavy, though, I'll probably include it.
In games like Mass Effect, I typically hide the helmets for my crew, although in ME 2, I'm forced to wear my helmet for the health bonus. I'm glad there's games like Guild Wars where they let you hide head equipment while still getting its bonuses.
A strange aversion to my rule, though, is White Knight Chronicles. That game has no helmets whatsoever except for some mask that looks like a court jester face. I actually wish there were helmets there, if just for a bit more variety in appearances.
I would like it better if more game would have masks that you could swear =P
...Masks are cool...
...So yeah, I like face covering things. Though, since in some games seeing facial expression is good thing...
...Depends on that whether my character is created by me/heroic mime or if its type of game that doesn't show faces well...(like, old games. You know, like Fallout? You only see faces of important npcs in those... Forgot what they were called, "talking heads"?)
I've been known to sacrifice performance for style, especially in the Armored Core PS 2 games...
Meh, in a few MM Os that I've played, I alwasy figure that the helmet is the least defensive of equipment, so if I don't like it, I remove it. And I still look good afterward without sacrificing fighting ability.
The thing about making witty signature lines is that it first needs to actually be witty.I remember playing Ragnarok Online a little, and wearing the Mr Smiley Face mask for its defense bonus...
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Well, there aren't any helmets in Borderlands, as there are Shields instead, so I have to pick based on stats compared to ones I have equipped when buying new Shields. If I get shot in the head, the Shield will determine how much damage from that is shaved off. Similarly, in FATE and other Diablo clones, I'd pick based on stats and/or sockets. In Minecraft, it's much better to have Diamond Armor (including Helmets), but the problem is finding enough Diamonds. Lastly, in Team Fortress 2, Hats don't do anything unless they're part of a set that grants some passive effect when you equip all the items in a set. Though, Hats are generally stylish, so yeah.
In my opinion, the reason why some helmets may clash is because they're either surprisingly powerful or they're meant to go with a set of equipment that looks better as an ensemble. If it's the latter, the set might be for a different character build and/or class. If it's the former, the developers just felt like doing it.

Depends. I like the look of the hoods in dragon age and all the head pieces in fallout are good. I refuse to have helmets toggled when I play a worgen in wow though, looks bloody ridiculous.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?Hmmm...I guess this no-helmet rule wouldn't apply if you play an RPG where the protagonist is ugly a sin as well.
"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."I usually play what makes sense. In Mass Effect, for example, my entire crew are in open combat. It makes sense that they wear helmets.
Curse the ill fortune that led you to me.Well...so is literally every other RPG in existence that has an equipment system...
A non-combat RPG would be pretty boring...
"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."I can go either way.
Umbran Climax◊Helmets are the first thing to go, for me, when it comes to sacrificing stats for aesthetics. And I'm big on aesthetics.

I'll probably choke on not using helmets with they're ugly and I can't hide them. Helmets Are Hardly Heroic, people!
If I have an option to make it so that the equipment doesn't show while it is equipped I flip that on and go about my business. I don't wear hats in games. I REFUSE.
If I lack that option I just wear them. I tend to hate most of them but I want the stat boosts from them. I really should just start refusing to wear them.

If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI hide helms/hats in World Of Warcraft (and now, Rift) unless they look really good (see: engineering goggles).
Yeah engineering goggles are pretty sweet. Most everything else in World Of Warcraft is fuck ugly though.
If someone wants to accuse us of eating coconut shells, then that's their business. We know what we're doing. - Achaan ChahI always want to see my character's face, but I also want my character to be wearing a helmet when appropriate. So for example in Mass Effect I usually go for the helmet that allows you to see your character's face. In ME 2 I also like to go for the facial optic that covers one eye, mostly because it looks cool.
One thing that annoyed me about the other armours available apart from the N7 type was that they all had obscuring helmets.

With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars. Most of the MM Os I've played had the option of hiding helmets. People love to do that because it makes them look like some cartoon hero.
So I tend to leave mine visible, just to be different. Of course, there are exceptions.
I'm curious about something, Signed. Do you find face-covering helmets ugly by default or on the very principle of them being face-covering or have you just never encountered a helmet design you liked?

I'll almost always hide the helm in World Of Warcraft. Wish I could hide the robe for casters too, all of 'em look the same. But the plate helms are just hideous. I mean WTF is this shit.
I'll hide the helm in most other things where possible. Wish I could in KOTOR, those things look ridiculous.

^^
- The majority are pretty hideous...
- The few that aren't ugly are just bland and generic looking...
And in the few cases where they aren't ugly or bland, they just don't look anywhere near as cool as my character's exposed head with hair being shown off.
And when I make a character in character creation, isn't normal to make him/her as good looking as possible? Unless you're intentionally going for the "ugly looking hobo" look to roleplay that is.
But like I said, if my character was Gonk, then yeah, put on ANY helmet you want, preferrably the face covering kind please, you ugly SOB.
So to answer your question...yes. I do find them ugly by default, since the majority range from hideous to bland.
The few face covering helmets I like are....masks I guess, and even in that case, it's very rare.
I also have to mention that these vary greatly from RPG to RPG.

"Every opinion that isn't mine is subjected to Your Mileage May Vary."The problem in most MM Os is that the majority of helmet hiders insist on choosing a hairstyle that looks like:
- An anime/game character (outside of the MMO itself)
- Naruto
- Sasuke
- Cloud Strife
- Sephiroth
- A Super Saiyan
(Those last 5 are separate because each one is so ridiculously common)
I have no idea why this is the case but I guess that's why I always choose to show my helmet unless it really makes me puke.

I know I mentioned non-RPG examples before in this thread, and I'm gonna do that again, but do try and buy the Kevlar Vest-And-Helmet Combo in Counter Strike, as it does keep you alive a little longer and it doesn't even show up (to my knowledge).
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific Mackerel
JRPG or WRPG.
With those two points in mind...does anyone ever debate whether they should put on a headgear and gain it's bonuses, or just leave the head slot empty because of how ugly headgears in many games can be? Or in a multiplayer RPG, avoid wearing helmets for the sake of being unique *. And other times, the helmets just don't give all that much of a bonus anyways.
Or sometimes you just like your character's hair/face, and you don't want to cover it up with ugly generic helmet#25.
So...who actually do that?
