Question, any "Knight in Shining Armor" type use the coat? AFAIK, the kind most often use a cape or cloak.

I like Cape Hat Mask. I think that there could be occasional examples in the right sort of Badass Longcoat but it's generally more associated with capes. The big difference between the two is the personality and what they represent though.
Coat, Hat, Mask is the hard boiled detective, the down to earth Badass Normal, or the average joe of superheroes.
Cape Hat Mask is the Knight In Shining Armour. Bigger than life. Gallant. Heroic. Over the top.
Personality wise, they're basically exact opposites.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI'd say not ALWAYS heroic.
I think there's a practical side: Coat, Hat, Mask can pass for normal under casual inspection in a modern setting, till someone see the mask.
The cape however immediately adds a dramatic Flair. Not necessarily "Knight in Shining Armor" but theatrical none the less (Look at V, who is not really a good guy, but he IS theatrical, so he wears a cape).
The coat is practical, down to earth the cape is theatrical. Not always good, not always heroic, but theatrical.

Wouldn't Cape Hat Mask basically be Civvie Spandex?
More of a Subtrope. Civy Spandex is a mix of superhero clothing and normal clothing
It would be a subtrope just like Coat, Hat, Mask is.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickWhat if the coat is a Badass Longcoat cloak that stretches the line between coat and cape?
Rhymes with "Protracted."Then it depends on which general description he fits better. Is he more showy, or more down to earth?
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickSo I think what I'm hearing is the distinction between Coat, Hat, Mask and Cape Hat Mask would be the way the costume is worn, not the specific garments. But those names kind of make it seem like everyone with a cape goes in one and everyone with a coat goes in the other. Might be better to come up with something that's not a snowclone?
Cloaks are not Badass Longcoats. They're Badass Capes.
I also think that a clear distinction needs to be made that the Cape Hat Mask doesn't include works where a cape would be normal outer wear — Zorro didn't wear a cape to be flashy and stand out — he wore a cape because a cape was standard outer wear for the time period. The Shadow wears one for effect.
Cape Hat Mask should be "Character wears a hat and mask to hide their identity, and a cape (rather than a coat) for effect."

Right, I'm just going to take Cape Hat Mask over to the YKTTW so that we can lock this up? That ok with everyone?
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickThere's already a YKTTW for Cape Hat Mask languishing here.
Otherwise, lock it up.

Right now Coat, Hat, Mask covers both people Coat Hat Mask like Green Hornet which use it to keep their identities hidden an not look too conspicuous and Cape Hat Mask like Zorro and Tuxedo Mask which use it in a much flashier Modern Knight in Shining Armor kind of way.
Completely different attitudes and ways they do things, and the trope even says that.
