Female circumcision also known as female genital mutilation, is banned in almost all western nations on earth. However it remains popular in islamic and african nations.

Although not all forms of ritual female genital cutting necessarily involve total removal of the clitoris. It's seen by many as the ultimate action of male oppression. The physical expression of a misogynistic culture effectively castrating it's women.

[up] Why, how best to ensure that female circumcision is made mandatory in Western nations, of course.

Hmm... I tried to write the OP as neutral as possible, but I doubt that you will see many supporters of FMG on TV Tropes, aside from trolls.

I honestly don't see any difference between a ritual nick on the clitoral hood and male circumcision. Both are done for cultural/religious reasons, and neither have a major impact on things like sexual vitality or the pleasure felt during sex.

That is completely different than genital mutilation in which the clitoris and labia are completely removed, which would be more akin to removing the entire glans to prevent sexual pleasure.

Yes, but I think when female circumcision is discussed, the latter (or at least, removal of the clitoris) is normally what's meant.

As to the former, I'm not wild about the idea of male circumcision, either.

I'm pretty indifferent to it. I prefer guys that have gone through the process, but that's just because I've had bad experiences with uncut guys that lead to serious squick.

Well.... at the least the male has some skin to remove, in constrat. Make of that what you will.

Agreed. although for the record I consider both to be a unnecessarily medical procedures that should be discouraged.

That's unfortunately in my experience not entirely true. As soon as statistics get mentioned how many women suffer from FGM, all forms get included. There's no clean seperation between the different forms.
It's more like saying the cutting the penis open to the root is bad (which afaik does sometimes happen in Africa as well), so male circumcision should be banned. Which is imho a very flawed line of reasoning.

Not like I support FGM on children in any way. But I prefer different arguments. :)

I think, when most people say "FGM," they are referring to the more extreme forms, where the clitoris is removed and stuff. But if it's just a nick on the hood, then, like with male circumcision, I really don't see what the big deal is, and everyone is blowing this way out of proportion.

I think in one thread or another, the Double Standard should at least be discussed. I have heard of this Double Standard before...

It is almost always better to deflect cultural issues rather than drive them underground. Righteous opposition makes us feel good but is rarely effective.

The major issue I have with superficial FGM is simply that females don't have the easy or simple landmarks that men do. It is generally just plain bad news when you fuck around with anything in or around a womans pelvis. Letting anyone without serious experience near structures that small and recessed is a formula for disaster. Hence it is way better to not drive anyone out into the cold.

As a serious question re: the "ritual nick" - how does this compare to getting a clit piercing?

That’s the epitome of privilege right there, not considering armed nazis a threat to your life. - Silasw
