Personally I'm enjoying the Jedi Consular's story quite a bit, but so far my Cathar Sith Warrior has been my favorite to play along with my Bounty Hunter, whom I made the brother of my Warrior through Legacy.

Oh, I'm a new player btw grin

If you've never played an MMO, you'll quickly figure out whether or not the combat is something you enjoy. If it's not, Stealth and DPS are your friend.
Ah, that's a good point. If you decide that you really hate the combat, then playing as a class that can stealth (that's smuggler -> scoundrel and consular -> shadow on the Republic side, and agent -> operative and inquisitor -> assassin on the Empire side) is your friend, since it means you can skip a lot of the combat encounters.

Yeah, the other classes just get cool titles and whatnot. The Consular gets an army.

It's just opinions that I see on the SWTOR official forums, that people dislike the consular.

It also has these dialogue puzzles which rely on information provided earlier, that at best is saved in your Other tab until you log off.

I have played all the class stories through at least once, so I do know about the strengths of Consular story, it's just that it also has some weaknesses.

ALSO: There is currently an event called Dark versus Light, which is to create new characters and send them through practically everything the game has to offer. Despite spending a good deal of time trying, I don't think I'll manage to get all of the achievements, so don't go in expecting to get everything.

[up]The smuggler gains control of a pirate fleet. The inquisitor becomes the head of a cult and a member of the dark council, becomes commander of a good portion of the imperial fleet, and the So R expansion gives them the option of becoming immortal. The Jedi Knight becomes the commander of all Jedi forces during the battle of Corellia.

The difference is that the consular both has time devoted to building those forces, and you see them in action. The other classes lack one point or the other.

The Consular story is my favorite. I actually kind of like Nolan North's upper-crust American accent, and the storyline in Chapters 2 and 3 is about building a massive army to liberate Corellia.

Thank you very much everyone for the information. Especially NativeJovian for the very informative, detailed post.

I might just give it a try over the weekend, see how I like it. Provided of course my machine can handle it, though I don’t know why it wouldn’t.

Both the trooper and the bounty hunter, are appealing to me, but for my first character I can't go past the Sith Inquisitor. I read that they started out as a salve forced to become a Sith because of their force potential. And, after everything they went through, the idea of playing a Sith, that absolutely despises the Sith, was too good to pass up.

Back when I played this game way back at it's launch many years ago I played the Sith Inquistor. The Sith Inquistor story is pretty great if you ask me as you basically go from someone who was trod upon, taken advantage of, manipulated, and everything else under the sun that comes with being a former slave to one of the most powerful force users in the known universe at that time. I think in the end the only person that beat you was of course the Emperor.

The Sith Inquistor's origins being quite tragic when you think about it basically put the extra spin on the proceedings a lot of the time. The Light Side Inquistor (I played Light Side) was basically someone that wanted to be more then just another sadistic Sith but didn't want to be a completely by the books Jedi either. They were in more of the gray.

The Dark Side Inquistor from what I have heard and read pretty much personifies Who's Laughing Now?. Sadistic and scary yes but it's quite clear that they had no choice in how they turned out. They are very much a Tragic Villain really.

I don't think that even a light side Sith Inquisitor despises Sith. I always saw it as "Might makes right, so I can be nice to people if I want as long as I have the strength to back it up". They're still Sith, throwing around lightning and darkness, but they're reasonable about things, most of the time. Which makes it a pretty big contrast compared with how many full DS NPC Sith you have to deal with.

Yeah, light-side Inquisitor is fun because he confuses the shit out of people. "Wait, you mean you're not going to murder me as punishment for a failure due to circumstances entirely outside of my control?" "Nah, that's dumb." "...are you sure you're a Sith?"

Of course, going full dark side is also fun. Shooting lightning at things is the solution to every problem, no exceptions. The voice acting really sells it (at least for a male character, haven't played a female inquisitor) — he goes unabashedly Ham and Cheese Chewing the Scenery.

My inquisitor ended up being basically completely neutral, actually. He was cool to people by default, but wasn't shy about busting out the lightning on people who pissed him off.

[up]That's basically my Inquisitor too.

Also, do you guys know the best way to get lightsaber color crystals, or at least the schematics for making them? I really want some new ones but I'm having a real tough time finding them. I'm planning on giving my Sith Marauder one violet saber and one silver, while I want my Jedi Shadow to have either an orange or yellow saber.

Two words: [Shock him.]

The Inquisitor is up there with the Smuggler in terms of comedic dialogue options. Darkly comic and..."differently rational" in the Inquisitor's case rather than the more straightforward quipping of the Smuggler, but it's there. You can play the character seriously, although the draw of the snark side will always follow you.

[up]The fact that the Inquisitor has an endgame title specifically for neutral characters as well as dark and light suggests that might have been fairly common player choice, even in testing.

In most cases the crystals I get came from missions and in the emails you get after doing.

I liked the fact that the Jedi Consular in the chapter 3 core planet between the character missions and planet mission you are definitely putting a dent in the empire.

The Inquistor had some truly amusing snarky backtalk since the start. I remember choosing the options to snark back at the assholes at the very start (Overseer Harkun and that Sith Pureblood apprentice I think) and just being absolutely taken away about just how much of a Deadpan Snarker the Inquistor was in a good way.

Mine was kind of neutral but more leaning towards light side. He would only really hurt or torture people that really crossed the line on either which side. Did have a brief romance with Ashara(she had some interesting interactions with the Inquistor about whether or not he qualified as a Sith or not and what he wanted in his life if I recall correctly) and did show mercy just to mess with certain people yes but also to not have it on his conscience in the near future.

Not really.

I did have to swap my Knight and Warrior around, because the warrior's deeper voice felt wrong with the less bulky build I had originally.

[up]Yes. I eventually switched to a female Knight because of it.

I did also start up a DS Knight at one point, and I found the voice worked a little better for that. Incidentally, that voice? Solid Snake.

Well it's been a week since I started with my Sith inquisitor, and my first real shot at an MMO. So, my thoughts of the game?

I like it. It's very much a Bioware game, with how the missions and level designs play out. Which is probably part of the reason I've taken to everything so quickly. It's basically what people say it is; KOTOR, with other people running round the same place as you.

Granted I haven't tried any of the Pv P or Co-op stuff (with the exception of the Black Talon Flashpoint), but since I'm mostly playing for the story, I don't think I'm missing much.

You can pretty much skip PVP entirely unless you're grinding for one of a handful of things that require it (mostly achievements and a few pieces of equipment, though there's one alliance alert that requires some PVP — that's from the most recent expansion, though, so it'll be a while before you get that far). PVE group content is a larger part of the game, though most flashpoints have solo modes now (but you're SOL for operations). You can think of them a bit like sidequests; they're nice little bits of story if you want to play them, but you're not missing much if you skip them. Operations are more like bonus dungeons — they're a lot harder to get through, and they're pretty story-light for the most part.

The only exceptions to that are the Taral V and Maelstrom Prison flashpoints (on Republic side) and Boarding Party / The Foundry (on Empire side), which are pretty plot significant and set up things for the second expansion. I'd run those four in solo mode even if you skip the rest (which are largely self-contained stories).

For me, I've been playing through for the Dark vs Light event, running a dark side female Trooper. Renegade Femshep is fun.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.
