It's not even really even an Eastern/Western split at this point then because the popularity of JRP Gs has spread the Eastern version into Western cultural. It's more Black as in Evil vs. Black as in Offensive.

That would work. Maybe with Black Magic as a disambig. Though if we go that route we should probably open a TRS for Black Magic.

Well I haven't launched it because I am quite unsure on the everything (not happy with the amount of examples collected so I was thinking I did something wrong)

[1] so should I launch this and open a repair shop for Black Magic or just Launch it with a mass of not related to on 4 or 5 separate pages?

I think with the sheer number of tropes to be sorted here, a wiki project might be the best. We're using the same name for two completely different tropes and it's twisting how we define a large number of related tropes. It's going to take more than just a couple of people to sort out.

You want to start the thread? (Completely up for renaming Black Magic to Evil Magic and that would fix all the problems.)

Split what? right now Black Magic is Evil Magic. Someone who is the RPG term Black Mage is almost always Dark Is Not Evil. This which is my current YKTTW.

Black Mage s are all attack magic with little or zero Defensive or Healing magic which is contrasted by White Magic and Black and White Magic for specific pairings of both when combined into a character but not the best at each is Red Mage (Someone who is the best at both (maybe a Game-Breaker or not really) I was thinking of YKTTW ing a "Master Mage" after we get this all sorted out.

I thought you were suggesting moving Black Magic to Evil Magic? Both Evil Magic and Attack Magic are common references to Black Magic, hence my preference for a split and disambig for the main Black Magic.

Oh now I understand...not sure if I agree with that Attack Magic seems to be just plain too broad for a trope its in pretty much every work with magic. Black Magic right now is all about the fact that its evil in source, cost or effect.

Black Mage the name fits my YKTTW extremely well (with about 8 related tropes) and its not just Attack Magic (as I explained above). Black Magic currently has the Redirect Black Mage which is my current YKTTW so that will have to be changed, the redirect only has 11 wicks but of those only like 5 seem to go anywhere and those seem to be misuse...

If it's in all of them, then it's just an Omnipresent Tropes. If you wanted a supertrope to that type of magic, I'd suggest Attack And Defense Magic (as they're almost always paired that way) and mention that they're commonly referred to as Black Magic and White Magic respectively (although, I've seen inversions). Possibly the addition of Good And Evil Magic to clear other things up.

I'd support splitting Black Magic, since it has two contradictory meanings.

Raso, please be careful. Some of the wicks you're redirecting to Black Mage were supposed to go to Black Magic.

Going to bump this since I have no clue what to do now. But Black Magician Girl's trope is still missing...

I took a look at it, and yes, it's bad. The article only seems to talk about what the trope isn't.

We seem to have support to split and two prototype articles. Should we have a crowner, or can we just go for it?

Was this ever resolved? The new sterilized is sooo not cutting it. In Dragon Age alone, there's a world of difference between Morrigan and Merrill. Both use attack magic, but only Morrigan truly fits this trope. After reading this page, I still fail to understand why Fast Eddie didn't just rewrite the trope to not be so dependent on the Staff Chick, if that's what was bothering him, since you can have one without the other (Raven from Teen Titans and Magik from New Mutants come to mind).
