Yaoi Fans vs. Yuri Fans

Why isn't there that much of a rivalry between these two?

Why would there be? Unlike Gay vs Straight, there's no conflict of interests between Yaoi fans and Yuri fans.

I thought that yaoi and yuri were made for the same demographic.

I don't think Yuri is made for straight women...

There are way more rabid yaoi fangirls.

Can someone explain to an outsider the fascination those rabid yaoi fangirls have with the genre, please? I've never met one in real life, and if I had, this is something that I would ask of them.

There are rabid yuri fans, but as said, yaoi fans outnumber them by a huge farking margin.

There is a "rivalry" among some of the stupider yaoi and yuri fans. Declaring the others' likes disgusting, calling each other names, going on about the wonders of their preferred form of homoeroticism. It is oddly this amazingly retarded hate that led me to look into yuri.

I read a fanfic once where the horny teen author said something about yaoi is the only real shipping for something and yuri and het are sick and perverted. I wanted to slam my head through the keyboard.

I would imagine that it's the basic sexual thrill of seeing two attractive male characters get it on.

(Don't ask me to explain the obsessive adherence to yaoi tropes, though. I can't think of a reason other than it's easy and It's Just How Things Are Done)

While I've seen some pretty dumb stuff from yaoi fans (Particularly the kind that are only in it for the yaoi), I've seen more EWWWW, GAY reactions. This is most regarding yaoi, though. Yuri seems a minority in most of my fandoms.

Though it varies from fandom to fandom.

There are female yuri fans, and I think they're roughly equal in number to the male ones. I would guess that yuri works by actual lesbians tend to be pretty different from ones by straight males, in the same way that Bara is very different from yaoi, though I haven't seen enough to make a factual statement.

Yaoi and Bara tend to be much more rigid genres. Yuri has a way of obscuring who the intended audience is supposed to be ie. there's not a fine line differentiating seinen yuri from jousei yuri.

From what I've read manga by lesbians for lesbians tends to be different in terms of the themes it deals with and how it deals with the themes of other yuri. It also happens to be more realistic when it comes to gays in the country. For example the gay community of Shinjuku Nichoume has been mentioned in quite a bit of it. Most of what I've read in this area has been little known, doujinshi, and published in already dead magazines like Anise or Phryne. DEAD AS FUCKING DIRT. If curious Rica 'tte Kanji?!, Honey & Honey, and Plica are examples of this sort. The first you can purchase here in the states through ALC Publishing. The latter two can be found on lililicious.net.

There are also differences between the yuri for men (see Yuri Hime S for examples) and the yuri for straight women (see Yuri Hime).

Honey & Honey is intended for a straight female audience. Yuri Hime in its current incarnation is not targeted towards any particular demographic.

I still maintain there's no fine line between seinen yuri and jousei yuri. For instance, Morinaga Milk has written both seinen and jousei stories that feel very similar thematically.

There are differences between the two but I will give it to you that there line isn't as clear as between bara and yaoi. It's still there though. I will also give you that I may not be correct about the exact demographic for which Honey and Honey is written. The fact still remains that it is the autobiographical work of a lesbian though and is different as such.

I don't really read what is targeted at me, cause nothing really does. I like cute romantic relationships of all types, which is mostly fluff and if contact exists it's something special.

Well, I would have to speak for myself, but besides looking hot I like how it's balancing gender roles. Even today you will rarely find a story where the girl is a distressing damsel/hot female lead with ineffective waif-fu rescued by the cool loner action protagonist or a bubbly semi action female lead who stumbles into the first aloof attractive looking male who is completly useless and will get eventually be saved when the female lead defeats the big bad. I'm... not happy about this balance in both ways. Often they just seem to be paired with each other because they have a different gender but no real spark is flying between them (of course, there are aversions. I really loved all pairings in GoodOmens for example. Or [[Naruto Hidan]] and Temari.) Rivals who would die for each other in shounen manga get me more interested than the suspossed romance for the third female [[Naruto especially when the male protagonist practically swoons over the antagonist]]. Just a example. Having both characters the same gender also takes out a lot of squick: for example, A and B agreed that A can test B's defenses against hacking anytime. A breaks through them and is curious about files from B he found. They are diaries and A uses them to do heaps of romantical things for B through them (but doesn't admit it because it could end their friendship). That fanfic left me swooning all over. If one of them was female it would have been creepy as hell. Also:I tend to avoid most yaoi manga because they just copy the inequal balance which sucks. Additional reason: For Canon-defilement purposes, also.

The only thing I've never understood with yaoi is the fairly rigid reliance on the Uke / Seme nature of relationships. It works, clearly, because a ex-gf who wasn't all that into anime (other than the one associated with my avatar) became transfixed with the borderline Rapeis Love relationship in Mirage of Blaze. It just seems to pigeonhole relationships of a particular orientation. Not judging though — the yuri genre is full of stereotypical character tropes as well.
