I couldn't type two lines of code in a million years. I tried Max/MSP once and it was like giving a Game Boy to a seamonkey. I had a kick out of making sine sounds though, but that's about it. I'm not a programmer at all and I pretty much suck at anything related to math or science. It's not that it doesn't interest me though, I find some ideas and concepts fascinating (n-dimensional space, big fan of fractals, obviously for the visual appeal) but I just never got the hang of it.

Kinda sorta halfway done with the RPM album - if I stay productive these next couple weeks I should have just enough time to have ten complete tracks. Tomorrow I'm going to start vocals for this ridiculous word-salady sort of pseudo Hardcore Punk number I have worked up, tentatively titled "Page 37" - basically I opened up several books I owned to page 37 then picked out phrases to use as lyrics.

@inane Different strokes, then. FL Studio is the DAW for me, you can do virtually anything in creative ways if you're willing to try. Believe me, I've tried them all, but I keep going back to FL.

I definitely will keep using FL Studio (*Slicex is just sooooo niiiice*), my ideal setup would be running it through rewire in Reason though.

Reason sucks to me. The only reason (heh) why I'd have it is because of the Massive sound banks.

I don't really know what to call this thing I did: A remix? A self-mashup? I guess I'll go with the former. Essentially the process was:

1) Make a hammerhead beat and a single measure riff with the intention of using it for a remix of "Azz Everywhere" by Big Freedia. Beatmap the vocals to the rhythm, then kinda forget about it.

2) Use that same beat and loop for kind of a jungley, idmy instrumental instead.

3) Realize what I've done still might work as an "Azz Everywhere" remix if I cut the vocals up the right way.

4) It sorta does.

If you're wondering, I made the basic rhythm in Hammerhead, then did all those glitchy fills by cutting it up with ACID Pro. The main "synth" sound was originally a harmonica, while the one in the bridge was originally my voice.

Good news to the very few people here that care: A while back, I mentioned a rather interesting cassette recording that I made with a friend. Well, it's on my computer now. All I have to do is upload, when I can...

Just curious if anyone in here would be interested in hearing something from someone who isn't an FL Studio tinkerer but merely uses vocals and acoustic guitar.

...God that sounded way more hipsterish than I intended.

EDIT: Aw, hell, I'll post a link to it anyway. Here's a cover I did of "Nowhere Man" by The Beatles.

Here's a song I wrote and recorded in December for a final for a class. It's about the "Paul is dead" hoax. Personally, I think it's one of the best songs I've written, if not the best.

Hey, you guys know good electronic music guides for beginners in FL Studio? I've used FL for some years now and I still have no idea of what's a LFO, for example...

@0dd1: I can't help you much, it's not my style of choice at all, so my opinion might not worth it. Some things I'd like to point out are:

  • The vocals... I must be honest, I don't dig it. From my experience, it doesn't sound fine if you don't sing louder, and it doesn't sound like you're singing loud (I might be wrong, of course, my singing voice, for example, is awful no matter how loud I sing)
  • The sound is perfect and both voice and guitar sound crystal clear, your recording equipment is awesome.
  • As a non-native english speaker, I have some trouble understanding lyrics (and even if I don't, I usually don't pay attention at all), but hey at least what I get is that you CAN write... I can't write crap, and am envious now.
  • Also... Nice thing that it's just you and an acoustic guitar while not being a Jack Johnson ripoff.

  • Also... Nice thing that it's just you and an acoustic guitar while not being a Jack Johnson ripoff.
  • In all honesty, I'm not too into my own singing voice no matter how softly or loudly I sing either, but either way, I don't have too many options, since most of the time when I record I'd either in my bedroom at home or my dorm room, and there's no way I can go too loudly without disturbing people (in more ways than one sometimes).
  • Would you believe that's how good the sound is just using a basic HP laptop, Audacity, and an old microphone that came bundled with my copy of Hey You Pikachu? grin
  • I don't think that's on you, I really do need to learn to enunciate better. But I appreciate the compliment ^_^ I have written much worse stuff, though tongue
  • Being completely honest, I don't really listen to Jack Johnson and really haven't heard too much of his stuff beyond overhearing it from some girl's iPod and speakers one night a couple of weeks ago. I'm mostly influenced by The Beatles and a lot of 60s pop musically (which is not to say I don't subconsciously take influence from other various sources—as I noticed later on, part of the melody in the chorus is almost directly ripped off from the pre-chorus part of Cage The Elephant's "Back Against the Wall"), and lyrically, I can either be incredibly blunt or unnecessarily quirky and pretentious, sometimes even in the same song.

EDIT: To contrast with the not-so-loud singing above, here's me completely mentally unhinged and perhaps taking a bit too much influence from the Pixies:

For those curious, it's partially inspired by this urban legend, so I tried to make it sound like something that you'd expect to hear with a psychedelic freakout. And then decided to laugh like Stitch over it.

0dd1 - your singing strangely reminds me of the singer for The Residents, especially on "Baby Microwave". Probably just a matter of the accent.

The RPM album is finished. I did not end up rapping over that track I wanted to rap over. I do have this idea in the back of my mind of taking old, possibly restructured instrumental beats of mine and rapping over them, so maybe now it can be part of that project. Actually it's a particularly good candidate for such a thing because unlike most of the other old instrumentals I want to rap over, I still have the multi-track recordings handy, so I can rearrange it pretty freely if I decide I need to.

A list of crazy album or EP ideas I may or may not end up pursuing:

  • An electronic album with vocals.
  • A rap album or EP, using the "new rhymes over old beats" idea or otherwise
  • A 99 track album. I actually fit 99 tracks onto a mix cd full of Miniscule Rocking recently, which made me come up with the idea. I imagine it'd be pretty ambient-based and have a lot of Fading into the Next Song.
  • A full album for AwESOME MOVIE SOUND NOISES!. I've been half-joking to myself that if I ever do this, I won't put it up online or tell anyone about it's existence, but every time I use a public restroom I'll just tape a cd-r to the inside of a stall door. I want someone to genuinely think it's the work of a street crazy who somehow got a hold of a computer and some recording software.

I'm trying out splitting tracks with Audacity and making them instrumentals.

Unfortunately, David Guetta pulled a fast one with "Turn Me On" and seemly placed the vocals in both channels.

...And it looks like it's on You Tube already.

Oh well, at least I learned a new technique.

Are they centered? If so, there's a way you can get rid of them, but unfortunately you'd get rid of everything else in the center and I can't remember how to do that anyway.

Well, for anything recorded either in mono or after the mid-1960s, very yes.

EDIT: And, speaking of the mid-1960s, I made this cover of 'Daydream Believer'. I actually recorded it a month ago, but I figured in light of Davy Jones's passing, it'd be a nice tribute to upload it now.
