You do realize that most Americans aren't as patriotic as they are stereotyped, right? In fact, most people I have run into make fun of the United States at nearly every opportunity they get.

Funny i seem to recall a recent trend in rising nationalism in Europe.

You have to remember that America is absurdly split. Every election is ridiculously close. So, at the very extreme, only half of Americans are anything and the other half hates them.

In general, Americans tend to be more comfortable with nationalism because the idea of American nationhood is (usually) rooted in political ideals rather than ethnicity (or even culture).

^^^ Another thing that confuses the issue is that many Americans are highly devoted to the idea of America but think that the government (or more specifically the elected portion of the government) is horrible.

^ much of America is unable to differentiate that politicians are not the government. In addition, much of America was brought up under anti-communist propaganda designed to convince them that more "Government" will lead to the USSR or something.

Except that polls show that people like members of the government on an individual level. It's just "Government" in general that they hate.

Being proud of a country you were coincidentally born in seems kind of odd to me. Please don't flame me for saying that... I'm an American myself, but I'm far from nationalistic. Not sure if that makes me a small minority or not.

"As strong as ever" is most certainly wrong, but there do seem to be more nationalists in America than most other first-world nations.

Dude. The right wing and nationalists are going up strongly in Europe. It's not very pleasant. Do your research first.

I know Britain isn't very nationalistic. (Well, not as Britain... go to Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or England itself for that matter and its another story in regards to nationalism within the country. We're too divided amongst ourselves I guess.) Elsewhere though that really doesn't apply. Especially in Eastern Europe, which is fiercely nationalistic. And I believe the other major European states are very nationalistic as well.

Its a shame, because if there's one thing that Europe needs less of, its stupid divisive nationalistic tendencies. Seems the only thing we learned from WWII is that its not worth fighting about.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

Believe me, nationalism is dead in Germany. You might find people (like me) who are proud of what Germany achieved in the last 65 years but thats it. And frankly, I don't see any reason why we should be sad about it. Nationalism leads only to war, I'm glad we have finnaly understood this.

Your country is where you were raised (and presumably born in) and formed you into what you currently are, it's only natural that people become attached to it even if they had no choice in the process. To a different extent, it's like how people tend to be attached to their own families.

Nationalism is still very much alive and kicking in Eastern and Eastern Central Europe. Poland is especially infamous for this nowadays (they married their culture to the "victim card").
