And this is the one point I will concede to the "subbing is best" crowd: Japanese is a language with inflections, stress and tone that are so different to run of the mill English speakers that some dubs just butcher the anime. I admit this as someone who has known and worked with non-English speakers of all kinds, somethings just don't survive translation.... And I prefer dubs!
That said, I tend to give a series a chance, like 1-2 eps before I write it off. The Witchblade anime was so bad, I barely watch it save for 1-3 eps that are kinda okay. I sought it out because some critics on TGTWG and other sites tore into it (me thinking the critics were wrong)....big mistake. Flat characters, poor Off-Model animation and a plot with enough holes in it to make swiss cheese blush. And the show was made for an American company!.
I'll check out Chuck's review, but at least give the show one more ep...then drop it like a bad habbit if it truly is bad.

All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be a case on The First 48I think you did a pretty good job explaining some of the differences.
I like to watch dub with the subtitles turned on and compare as I go. Some things can be hilarious (like in Inu Yasha once, there was a slow pan across a room - dub was silent, sub had a monologue going).
As for "tone isn't that important" I will point out this vid from "every frame a painting." (should start at 10:33 but jump to there in case my link messes up - the whole video is good) https://youtu.be/7vfqkvwW2fs?t=10m33s
The tone of voice, is like the music of a movie scene. A simple adjustment can have massive ramifications, just imagine the difference changing a line from sincere to sarcastic could have on any of your favorite scenes and I get the complaints about how the dub altered stuff.

I never said the Tone isn't Important.
I said the difference in tone hardly seems to address what makes the first episode look so weak.
It doesn't, but it does make it a lot more serviceable. Kino's Journey is a pretty atmospheric show, and that doesn't come through in the reviews very well, but the first episode was relatively weak compared to the others. It sets up the premise and it establishes a general mood of melancholic wistfulness and wanderlust, but as a story I admit it's not nearly as strong as later ones.
All in all, though, it's a good show.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Honestly most of Animated isn't particularly bad. Some of it is really good, and the most of it is regular Star Trek fare.
By this rate, TAS will be the first Star Trek show that Chuck completes in it's entirety. There's like seven episodes left.
Also, it's been quite a while since we've had Damn Dirty Mutant award.

Children of Dievas - my webcomic about the Northern CrusadesOh, and if my math is correct, Chuck has now covered 400 episodes of Trek.
Children of Dievas - my webcomic about the Northern Crusades"She actually has more awards then all her costars put together" XD
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole!Wait, "A request from JesuOtaku" ?
Well at least he picked a better episode than whoever requested the first one.
It doesn't surprise me that Jesu Otaku recommended an episode of Kino. Despite what some of you seem to be thinking after the first review, Kino's Journey is a great little series and well worth Chuck's time. I hope we see more of it as things continue.
I always wondered what happened to that Romulan in The Search. In hindsight I'm betting Edington shoved her out an airlock and then sent false reports to the Senate for as long as he was stationed on the ship.
Is anyone else disappointed that the Romulan wasn't added as a recurring character? It sounds super interesting to me. We've never had a recurring Romulan character before (unless you count Tasha's daughter) and if any of the Trek series' could have done it justice it would have been DS9.
A romulan character would've been interesting, but a due to the focus on the Gamma Quadrant, there was no way to get one in. Worf would come and stir the pot and then Odo would have his arc.
All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be a case on The First 48God those reviews are so good. I have never seen an anime so blatantly bad as Kannazuki.
With all the different anime he's reviewing, Chuck's doing a good job of scaling the heights and plumbing the depths.
Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.Said it before and I'll say it again, anime is a legitimate artform in Japan. Sadly that doesn't mean it's a good artform. Just as there are sh_t tv shows and shows that lose their sh_t, there are anime series that are good and some that are bad.
JesuOtaku reviewed Witchblade the anime. Top Cow gave Studio Gonzo money to make an anime on their comic. And I'll stop here, tl;dr - it's not very good. It's Enterprise levels of bad. The dialog makes Capt "Dutchess" Archer seem like a Kirk or Picard, the "hero" is less mature than her 5 year old daughter. And like Enterprise it completely screws with the franchise canon. Oh and it's dripping with sexism that would make Gene Roddenberry, Maurice Hurley and Brannon Bragg blush.
When Sf Debris is feeling better, someone should get him OutlawStar. There's a series that's chicken soup for the geek soul. (Just ix-nay on the irefly-nay).

All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be a case on The First 48I'd go with Trigun
Outlaw Star is bit more Cotton Candy then Chicken soup
I'm A Pervert not an Asshole!Definitely Trigun, though Outlaw Star I think is a bit more of a science fiction show, right?
Me and my friend's collaborative webcomic: Forged MenHe hasn't finished Cowboy Bebop.
The tone of voice hardly seem like it'd make the episode better, but I'll take your word for it. And hope someone actually tries to recommend non-shit Anime to Chuck before the month's out and cutoff date kicks in.
