The Baron was kinda over done, I can see that a bit. But then again the book was written in The Sixties and filmed in early Eighties so the Unfortunate Implications in the Baron's character are Values Dissonance today.

I have no idea what any of this means and I've read it six times.

I think he's saying the Baron was written as a pedophile, and that was cool in the 60s, but not in the 80s so they made him ugly and shit?

Or maybe he's saying that Pedophilia became okay in the 80s, so that's why he's just an ugly murderer in the 80s film.

... I'm confused.

I thought dune was weird as a kid, and I still think it's weird now, but thankfully it turns out it was just the movie that was bizarre.

Ahem, "she".

But yeah, gays were Acceptable Targets back then. Gay = pedo if you grew up before 1990 (Sadly that's why gay teachers still get fired). Nowadays that don't fly.

The Barron was written to be evil evil and David Lynch turned it Up To Eleven. For The '80s. So the Barron was a pedophile (strongly hinted at in the film) as part of his cartoony villiany. Still, the performance is kinda fun to watch, like a NASCAR wreck. But 30 plus years? All that campy gay is really cringe worthy. Since it's hinted at, the few scenes are easy to skip.

The Sy Fy channel miniseries? The Barron is very cringe worthy, the script flat out says "He likes da boyz" in a 30 meter tall neon sign. But at least the actor is trying, given the crap lines, all the other performances are flat.

Still don't see how it's a product of the 80s when it's OUTRIGHT STATED in the book that he's into boys. And he's not a cartoon villain there. Sooo, still not seeing your point.

[up]David Lynch didn't tone the Barron down (despite the strides LGBT actors did make in that decade). A few years later, Silence of The Lambs got demonstrations because the villain was "queer" and it made trans and queer look bad (and yes this was before tumblr and yes I don't agree with that point because I read the book).

Camp Gay villains were accepted in Hollywood back then because gay = bad if you're a coked up studio exec. "Think of the children" was a very real moral panic back then. So having a Camp Gay character who gave off the "creepy molester" vibe was a shortcut to make him a villain.

As if the mass murder and treating the Fremen as scum didn't sell that beforehand.

I loved the film and own the book. So I'm not bashing the film. I'm just sayin' that the character was dated. Of all the things Lynch could have changed, he doubled down on a cringey character.

Then Sf Fy doubled down. It was like deep fried ice cream...

And then the Baron "returned" in book 3 and the whole pedo thing actually became a bit of a plot point so... I'm not seeing the problem either.

I absolutely adore any scene that has both Quark and Garak in it. The two have a lot in common. Sadly, outside of this episode I think there's only one other scene in the show where they have screen time together.

Don't forget the Casablanca spoof. "Profit and Loss", I think it was. Quark was Bogey, Garak was Renault, and Lazlow/Isla was some hot Cardassian revolutionary.

For a character with the title God Emperor of the Known Universe I'd have thought the guy would have a larger role in the film, or at least not get told what to do by those Guild guys. My expectations may have been skewed because I watched this one episode of Billy And Mandy that was an adaptation of Dune. I didn't realize until after watching the movie and looking it up that the episode was a parody of the FOURTH Dune book.

[up]He's not a God Emperor.

That's a title given to a later character. He's just an emperor (Or Padishah Emperor, which is his title). They make no claim of divinity.

Just the first season, tho.

I would prefer something from Fate Stay Night (no, not Fate Kaleid).

Fate Zero could work best at this point (since current FSN anime is not finished. Plus Chuck is already familiar with writer.

While plenty that would be cool to see him do.. think he might be getting oversaturated at this point. Let him finish up some of the ones he's started before going onto new series.

I did always like that phrase "Believe in the me that believes in you."

Gurren Lagan, if memory serves, is a series that goes "Hijinks, craziness, hijinks, hijinks, crazy crazy crazy, hijinks, hijinks, hijinks SHIT JUST GOT REAL!"

[up][up] Nah for Strike Witches I mean would he take things from the more more from a historical perspective? With the changes made such as Hitler does not exist but they were still moving in the direction of war till the Neuroi invaded. As well as the traits that the characters have that are based on their historical selves.

The Neuroi themselves are actually kind of interesting too.
