North Korea willing to reconcile unless Seoul 'opts for war'
They also announced their decision to expand and improve their nuclear arsenal. Can we just invade now? Anyone?
Si Vis Pacem, Para PerkeleIf they nuke anyone, they're going to get a Tsar Bomba right on the Kim's household. Nuclear war is only apocalyptic if there's a domino effect, and China is going to abandon them if they do something this insane.

Who watches the watchmen?North Korea: We didn't piss enough nuclear armed powers we need to step up our game and make another enemy that can erase us from the face of the Earth.]]
Inter arma enim silent legesIf we're lucky, they'll soon antagonise China and well, and the world will be united in harmony by our mutual contempt of North Korea.
Man Putin is having a bad day, first this then Eurovison.

"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranWhat's going on? Haven't seen anything that might irritate the guy as of late on the news.
A Ukranian won Eurovision beating out the Russians.
Who watches the watchmen?Obligatory.
Inter arma enim silent legesWith a song that's seen as anti-Russia, what with it being about the USSR deporting the Crimean Tartars from Crimea during WW 2.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranHow does North Korea's policy formulation process go? "We are avowed enemies of three major nuclear powers, one of which has extensive military assets on our border. All our neighbors despise us. The Chinese are rapidly losing their patience with our destabilizing actions. In conclusion, let's kick Russia in the shins."
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects."the people are starving, we need to do something crazy so that everyone thinks we're crazy and sends us food, but the crazy thing has to be small enough to not cause everyone to be willing to go though a nuclear war to get rid of us."
Hell maybe even "we need food and the US isn't giving in anymore, we can't beg anyone for food because we are the mighty People's Republic of Korea, maybe we can get some from the Russian's if we kidnap some people? They won't actually attack us because we're useful to them geopolitically".
Russia is almost the sane choice, China would cut aid, the US and South Korea might shoot back, Russia cares about North Korea enough to not just stomp it but doesn't have as many other things it could cut as China does.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranWhat strategic advantages does North Korea offer Moscow? Coal? Pinning down US assets?
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Keeping Japan in line.
In line with what? If more than anything North Korea makes a good case for why Japan should rearm and being a close US ally, being rearmed isn't something that would make Russia happy.
Inter arma enim silent legesRussia gets the same things China gets from NK: Cheap labor and raw materials. Unlike China though, for historical reasons, it doesn't have nearly as much leverage.
Final Fantasy, Foreign Policy, and Bollywood. Helluva combo, that...North Korea ties up the US PACOM (PAcific COMmand) and keeps South Korea and Japan in line by making them nervous. Plus an actual shooting war would suck up so much resources and devastate the region, with Russia off to the side "neutral".
Even Evil Has Standards: there was a planeload of Russian nuclear scientists headed to North Korea back in 90-91. Seems they were out of a job and Greatest Korea was hiring. The Russian Interior Ministry or the Army put a stop to that - by having commandos board the plan on the tarmac. Then again that was when Russia was bankrupt, now Putin might let things slide.

All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be a case on The First 48North Korea helping Russia by pissing in the US's cornflakes. More specifically North Korea has helped cause the US's pivot to Asia, which is a pivot away from Russia and Russia interests in both Europe and the Middle East.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranMiddle East is part of Asia.
It isn't in cultural/geo-political terms.
Keep Rolling OnNot in the American geopolitical sense, only East (and maybe South-East) Asia is Asia in that sense, same way that an "Asian" person in the US will be an East Asian.

So it seems one of the first bits of info to come out of the Congress is that NK will have a no first use policy on its nukes.
The Congress is still in session so more will follow, but thats the first significant thing that seems to have come out of it so far, followed by possible normalization of relations (as in, peace treaty).
