YMMV / William Strife

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • While Will has many fans for his presentation style, there is debate as to how well it holds up when Will has another person to bounce off. Either the other person makes a refreshing change or clashes too much, although as Will tends to be The Comically Serious it isn't a serious fandom debate.
    • His lack of recent content about Bethesda games due to not wanting to burn out on Fallout and The Elder Scrolls and instead doing more Minecraft has disconcerted some fans, who note that while it's understandable to wait until Elder Scrolls 6/Fallout 4, Will did promise prior to update the New Vegas weapons guide (Which was done during late 2014) and a promised playthrough of New Vegas (Currently underway).
    • The lack of Will on many main channel videos (or at least on a bigger channel such as Duncan's or Sjin's) is something of a sore spot for his fans. While many people would like to see Will in something big, others think that his publicly saying "I'm not allowed on <insert server for game here>" is just stirring up public drama. Complaints are starting to die down thanks to him, Zoey Proasheck, Sips and Turpster playing Borderlands 2 together.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Will is very popular amongst the Yogscast fans despite having been a member for a relatively short period of time. This is in part because of his being the Straight Man and Mr. Exposition (given how Minecraft very much suffers from Guide Dang It! this isn't surprising). There are many calls for him to be on the main channel.
  • Self-Imposed Challenge: Strife enjoys these to spice up the video, as otherwise he'd likely just mop the floor with games.
    • His Fallout 3 playthrough has one of these- Strife chooses to specialize in Big Guns and Explosives, while keeping his Repair skill at around 40. He is not allowed to increase it unless he finds a Skill Book.
    • Dragonborn also has him playing as a rather low-level mage who specializes in Conjuration- specifically Bound Swords. He eventually was forced to (offscreen) join the College of Winterhold to acquire more high-level gear because he kept getting his ass kicked by a boss.
    • Fallout New Vegas similarly had Strife sticking to Explosives while keeping repair at an average score.
  • "Stop Having Fun" Guys:
    • Generally averted, as Will mostly gets to the point in his videos.
    • He appears to have done a complete 180 on his usual style in Solutions in Chaos, having started off attempting to maintain seriousness with Parv around, but eventually degenerating into humour and slacking off.
  • Values Dissonance: Causes this on occasion. In the US, words such as "spastic" are still used in a medical context, whereas in the UK it is seen as a general insult to someone's mental or physical health, making some British viewers slightly uncomfortable.
