YMMV / Total Drama Comeback Series

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The entirety of Hannah's character can be summed up as the author shoving his belief that Christians are treated unfairly by the western world down the readers' throats.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • Two in Chapter 16 of TDC; the first is in the very beginning where we are treated to a ninja version of the season 1 opening titles (done in Photoshop...by Chef). The second was a ninja-parody song done by Ezekiel based on, of all songs, In the Navy. Though it does prove that Kobold can write parody songs really well, both instances come out of nowhere, have nothing to do with the plot, and neither are mentioned again outside said chapter.
    • Technically the second is mentioned a couple times as a reason why the cameras were not focused on the epic fight scene
    • Chapter 29 of TDC starts with a Soap Opera parody with lots of surprise pregnancies. May be Chris's way of mocking the Drama Bomb nature of the episode overall, but it still comes as a Mood Whiplash.
    • The next chapter, Ezekiel has a dream in which Heather asks him to redeem her through his love. For some reason, there was also a bear in a pink tutu dancing "It's peanut butter jelly time".
  • Catharsis Factor: Feral Ezekiel's massive No-Holds-Barred Beatdown of Chris Maclean in Chapter 49 was an equally massive release for Kobold and other Zeke fans who felt that Chris got off far too easy in the canon-verse for his treatment of Zeke in World Tour and All-Stars. And as a bonus, Colin was also on the receiving end of Feral Zeke's wrath in the same chapter. Considering what he did to Cody in the previous chapter, and how Colin's been nothing but an insufferable asshole in general, seeing him receive some well-deserved karma was great for steam release. Something Eva can attest to.
  • Crack Pairing:
    • Beth and Justin, Ezekiel and Heather, Katie and Noah. The first two were already popular fanon pairings, the third went on to become fairly popular.
    • Cody and Eva in Battlegrounds. They officially hook up at the end of the RV Race.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The Kool Kids Klub, and everyone's reaction to it (even Chris). Helps that The Simpsons did a very similar joke with similar results ("KKK? That's not good!").
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Clive ranked second in a poll asking who'd you like to see winning TDBG. The first was, unsurprisingly, Noah.
    • Joel and especially Hannah are rather popular characters too. People went nuts when these two were eliminated
  • Fridge Horror: In Chapter 21 of Comeback, the audience gets to vote on who gets paired up for the prom-themed challenge, and Heather gets paired with Trent thanks to some hacking by Cody's 9-year-old cousin Pearl, who's trying to get him the kiss from Gwen he's been wanting. An absolutely furious Gwen unleashes a (thankfully censored) torrent of violent profanity and death threats toward the audience in the confessional, who she thinks voted for Heather to be with Trent. Without realizing it, did she threaten to torture and maim a small child?
  • Funny Moments: Comeback's 11th chapter features the campers having to imitate each other for a challenge. Among the highlights: Beth mimicking Izzy.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Cody comforting Izzy in Chapter 34 of TBC, when she becomes convinced nobody likes her.
    • The end of Chapter 42.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Noah's line "The challenges get more and more degrading and dangerous, until by the end of this contest, he'll have us eating live bugs over an active volcano." In the World Tournote  finale, everyone ends up at the top of an active volcano (although they don't have to eat bugs).
    • Zeke prefers zombie movies. After seeing what he became in World Tour, this was hilarious. (Kobold was quite displeased, though.)
    • After the Super Strikers challenge, Harold facetiously suggests that Chris might be a Sith Lord. Cue the stinger in the World Tour finale, which parodies the closing scene of Revenge of the Sith, including featuring Chris in Palpatine-esque robes.
    • During the cosplay challenge, Duncan has to imitate Trent. He sings a song about how much he loves Gwen. Guess who gets a Relationship Upgrade in World Tour?
    • The Final 5 challenge in Comeback was the contestants having eliminated contestants build a model of them. The first Finale challenge in World Tour is similar.
    • The fifth challenge of Battlegrounds was centered around a zombie apocalypse. Shawn of Pahkitew Island would have been right in his element.
    • Sierra says in the first aftermath of ''Battlegrounds'' that she wouldn't mind Cody sucking on her thumb
    • Owen becomes an intern in Comeback after being eliminated first; Dakota's post-elimination storyline in Revenge of the Island is similar.
    • There would be a contestant named Rodney on the actual show.
  • Hype Backlash: Total Drama Comeback became as popular as it did mainly because it was one of the first competently written competition stories and the author advertised it wherever he could. Late arrivals to the story expecting a work of great literature are apt to be disappointed by the reality of a merely better-than-average fanfic with its share of flaws.
  • Les Yay: TKN is a fan of Bridgette/Gwen. Twice, Gwen kisses Bridgette on the lips very passionately and without hesitation in order to complete a challenge. Both times, Bridgette is a bit shocked at first, but then takes it in. And this is despite both of them having boyfriends.
  • Moe: Sakaki, who is at and past the point of being a moe-blob.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In Battlegrounds, Chris crosses it by having a challenge which includes injecting animals with a chemical that will get them riled up, and his intended first target is Chico the Raccoon. Bridgette stops him from harming Chico, but Ezekiel gets the injection instead, and becomes the Feral Zeke he sadly becomes in canon.
  • Narm: Katie repeating "I CANNOT BE CONTAINED!" over and over, after her elimination ended falling in this category.
  • Nausea Fuel: Its relatively late emergence in Comeback (compared to canon) is even Lampshaded by Chris.
  • No Yay: Judging by the AN's in the beginning of some chapters, this was the reaction of the readers when Kobold started to set up Ezekiel and Heather. They got better.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Rodney, after the author noted numerous reviews about him being overly competent at everything. Afterwards he started to mess up more, and his personality was expanded to show him terrified of failure.
    • Ezekiel's Character Development in Comeback compared to Canon is another example, and several other 'unpopular' characters get the same treatment.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor:
    • Not any one specific couple, but the Pair the Spares of nearly every single character takes up about half the chapter that could be devoted to action, or heck, even the friendships or conflicts.
    • The Cody-Eva-Anita love triangle deserves a special mention. It started as soon as Chapter 1 of TDBG (being hinted for the first time in last chapter of TDC) and it wasn't solved until Chapter 49. Oh, and TKN wasn't planning to solve it so "soon"; he simply realized that the readers were starting to get sick of it and lose interest.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Colin is an interesting example in that he's supposed to be hated. The problem is that he picked up a different kind of hatred due the fact of his character being incredibly flat (while Kobold is well known for writing deep three-dimensional characters) and generally uninteresting, while hogging a lot of spotlight in which he doesn't do anything other than being an asshole, plus breaking many readers' Willing Suspension of Disbelief due the fact that despite being very unpleasant to be around, having no redeeming qualities, and lacking any kind of talent or charm, he always managed to avoid elimination for very flimsy reasons.
    • Zachary as well, though to a much lesser extent than Colin. Besides being rather flat and uninteresting as well, Zachary is especially hated for his rather grating "everything is racist" attitude.
  • Unexpected Character: The author's hatred of how the canon writers dehumanized Ezekiel is well known, yet Feral Zeke is the focus of a challenge. However, rather than being a Played for Laughs The Lord of the Rings reference, it's played for horror, not just because it's something awful happening to an already established, beloved character, but there's also a risk of Ezekiel getting stuck that way permanently if the contestants can't find the cure in time.
  • Wangst: Carol doesn't find a boyfriend, and that sucks because of other reasons...
  • The Woobie: Several, but Ezekiel, Cody, and Clive in particular.
