YMMV / Super Mario Bros. Manga Mania

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: It has a comfortable niche in Japan and has been running continuously for over 20 years. Due to No Export for You, its image outside of Japan is less than pleasant. Its gag nature doesn't mesh with how people view Super Mario Bros. so it tends to get bashed.
  • Fandom Rivalry: It has a mostly western one with another Mario comic, Super Mario Adventures.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The 4Komas in chapter 12 have scenarios where Mario Wins by Doing Absolutely Nothing against a lakitu. Guess what became a fun challenge to try in Mario games years later?
  • Moment of Awesome: In the Super Mario 64 adaptation, just when Mario's on the cusp of victory, Bowser uses an N64 controller to delete the save file, completely undoing Mario's progress and erasing all the stars and power-ups he collected over the course of his adventure. Then he hoards all the stars and items for himself and puts every enemy and boss in the first room of the castle to attack Mario when he arrives. Mario gets one of his own when he manages to get the bosses to do a Heel–Face Turn and form a massive army to take on Bowser.
  • Older Than They Think: This manga was the first to introduce several things about the video games such as Bowser's crush on Princess Peach and Peach loving to bake cakes.
  • Values Dissonance: There's a big amount of focus on scatological humor, nudity, and other things acceptable in manga but not Western kids' comics.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: It is a children's Gag Series manga based on a children's video game series with content that would not be appropriate for a children's comic in the West, such as Vulgar Humor and depictions of nudity.
  • Woolseyism: These are done out of necessity for the French release, since the dialogue contains many puns and wordplay. Also, the lone Magikoopa's name in pre-Yoshi's Island chapters is changed to Kamek, to give him more prominence.
