YMMV / Super Animal Royale

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Do the Super Animals genuinely enjoy fighting each other or were they conditioned to be violent by S.A.W.?
    • Is Donk a Jerkass who only cares about himself, deserving of everything that happens to him due to his involvement with S.A.W.'s shady practices? Or is he just an innocent reporter trying to do his job?
    • Did Thomas open fire on the Super Penguins in episode 7 because they were aggressive? Or did he just want to test his new gun, and the Super Penguins just happened to be nearby?
  • Awesome Music: Pretty much the entire soundtrack counts!
  • Crosses the Line Twice: One of the Super Secret Milestones grants you a prisoner uniform. To get it, you need to shoot the Super Rat caged inside the caves with a Dart Gun
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Shortly after being introduced, Doctor Jennifer Dogna became a fan favorite for her Adorkable nature and cute appearance.
    • Super Skullcats seem to be this in-universe, according to Dogna; while S.A.W. wasn't satisfied with them, Skullcats were pretty popular with park guests prior to the incident.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • It might seem like an exaggeration that the Super Skunk Gas can kill you since skunk spray in real life is, at worst, really stinky, gameplay mechanics aside. However, S.A.W. uses genetic manipulation extensively; it's not hard to imagine that they genetically engineered Super Skunks to produce lethal gas.
    • It may seem weird that Thomas seemingly had the upper hand (paw?) against the armed penguins in his workshop in SAR Tonight's Episode 7 given that he was severely outnumbered, but then you remember that the penguins probably had just used all their ammo trying to shoot Donk and Howl, so they had no means to fight back.
    • S.A.W. is a human company, but there's also Super Animals working with them (like Doctor Dogna), the majority of them being Super Dogs. Now, which animal is known for their Undying Loyalty to humans?
  • Fridge Horror:
    • One of the billboards on the island depicts a fried Super Chicken on a plate. We can only hope that it's merely illustrative, and not that Super Animal Worlds is serving Super Animals as food
    • In one of the stores in the Island's Welcome Centre (Safari Sundries), there are gun-shaped shadows in a wall, implying that weapons were sold there. Were the park guests allowed to hunt the Super Animals for fun?
    • Just where the hell did all the humans go? We know they exist thanks to a billboards showing human park guests riding the Super Eagle, yet there's not a single one in the island, at least not anymore. It's implied that the Super Animals were mistreated, and that's what made them form the Rebellion, but what have they done with the park guests? At best, they just drove the humans away from the island. At worst…
      • Some scenes of passing cruise ships in Super Animal Royale Tonight imply the former.
  • Game-Breaker: The sniper rifle was considered this by many. It has the highest range of all weapons, high damage and the ability to completely destroy armor, regardless of tier. This is offset by the lower movement speed, low rate of fire, low accuracy when moving and small magazine, but pairing it with rolling and weapon switching allowed players to circumvent the rate of fire and accuracy problems while retaining mobility. This has since been nerfed with accuracy tweaks.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • The Christmas event was named CRISPRmas. CRISPR is a real-life gene editing technique, likely to be one of the tools used for the creation of Super Animals.
    • The Super Animal are obsessed with bananas, sometimes even worshiping them. Bananas in real life, at least the ones we know and eat, are all identical clones of a single group, the Cavendish, since they produce the highest quality fruit. So, in a certain way, Super Animals and bananas share some similarities regarding being products of genetic manipulation.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Praise Banan!
    • After the Trials of Skullcat update was released and a lab coat cosmetic was added as a milestone item, players began to quote the scientists from Half-Life (or, alternatively, Half-Life but the AI is Self-Aware) in the pre-game lobby.
  • Most Wonderful Sound:
    • The fanfare when you win a match. Top of the food chain!
    • The beeping of the Mole Crate, which can give you powerful weapons.
    • The little tune that plays when you achieve a Secret Super Milestone
  • Popular with Furries: It's a game with cute, customizable anthropomorphic animals. It was inevitable.
  • Scrappy Weapon:
    • The melee has very short range and deals 33 damage on unarmored Super Animals (or 16 and 1 bar against armored targets), meaning you'll need to land 4 hits to kill someone at full health, and up to 5 Quick math  if they have the strongest armor on. Even if you manage to get in range without being shot, it's very likely you'll be killed by other, better close range weapons, such as the SMG or Shotgun. Downplayed as melee isn't completely useless, as it's useful to break crates and grass for supplies and can strike multiple targets. Having it out also slows you down the least, allowing you to run faster when repositioning in a fight or when going to a new map location.
    • The regular Pistol is this as well. A semi-automatic pistol that's just outclassed by everything; sure, it's better than nothing, but you'll be replacing it as soon as you find something better. On its own, the main plus side is its extremely fast reload and being able to plink armor off far targets due to the armor system, if lacking any other long-range weapon. However its main purpose is to craft into dual pistols, which are among the best of the close-range weapons, even beating out the SMG if the player has the firing rhythm down.
    • The Ninja Booties powerup which halves the noise from a player's movement and slightly increases their speed. Despite auditory cues being very important for locating enemy movement (before engagement) as well as knowing where active firefights are happening, this powerup tends to be passed by for any of the others summary of the others  even in solo play.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • The Beakeasy has posters for Kelly Larkson, Lady Caw Caw, and Blue Jay Z, and plays a little snippet of one of each of their songs at random intervals. You can tell which is which because Lady Caw Caw's is essentially the chant from "Bad Romance" over the beat from "Poker Face", and Larkson's sounds like "Since U Been Gone" (this is much more evident in the full version on the soundtrack, where the verses pretty much are "Since U Been Gone" in Simlish).
    • The Russian Dance song is very clearly based on "Rasputin" by Boney M., just with some of the chords swapped round.
    • Musically it doesn't sound particularly similar, but if you listen closely to Ella Fishgerald's song, the lyrics are actually just slightly-obfuscated English. Does this sound familiar to anyone?...
    Weather is frightful
    Fire delightful
    We no place to go
    Let snow, snow, snow
** The music that plays when the crabs dance is much more lowkey than the famous Crab Rave, but the melody is unmistakably similar.
  • Squick: The BCG (big clucking gun) supposedly has a chicken inside of it, which provides the eggs it fires. Funny, right? But then you consider that the reload animation consists of pushing the projectiles inside the gun's barrel.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • If you die in a match while having a Mini Animal pet equipped, they will sit down and lie by your grave. Even as the Super Skunk Gas rolls in…
    • Peep getting killed by Catfive while rescuing Joe Clucks V and VI in the Season 2 finale of Super Animal Royale Tonight, followed soon after by Joe V losing Joe VI, their pet Mini Chicken, and their campsite to a couple of Zombie Joes later in the episode.
  • That One Achievement: The Pacifist Victory, Melee Only and No Armor milestones. They all require you to limit yourself in your play;
    • Pacifist Victory, as the name would imply, requires you to win a Solo match without dealing any damage to yourself or other players. Since you can't fight back, you have to run away from every encounter or it's game over. Plus, you have to actually win the match to complete the challenge, so you have to rely on either the other last players killing each other before they find you or hope they don't have enough Health Juice to fight off the last circle of the Super Skunk Gas.
    • Melee Only requires you to not use any of the more powerful guns and instead use only your melee. Due to the nature of the melee weapon (see Scrappy Weapon above), most opt to combine this with the Pacifist Victory playstyle instead.
    • No Armor requires you to simply not use any armor. Due to the small amount of base health you have by default, fights are much more dangerous without the armor's bonus hitpoints.
  • The Woobie:
    • The First Super Skullcat. Unlike it's fellow Super Animals, it's an artificially created species, never seen before. S.A.W. wasn't satisfied with the result, so they just tossed it aside as a minor attraction and moved onto new projects. Scared, abandoned and confused, it at least found some joy by scaring park guests as a mummy, even if it wasn't doing a good job.
Dr Dogna: If you do go see it... Just pretend to be scared, okay? Make it think it's doing a good job. It's had a ruff life, you know?
    • Joe Clucks V and VI: Joe V gets captured by the rebellion and subsequently finds out he was replaced by Joe VI. He then spends a considerable time on the lam with Peep and later Joe VI. Then when Peep tries to return the two Joes to SART, they find they've both been replaced by Joe Cluck VII, and are caged by Catfive, who nearly kills and eats one of them. Then Peep is killed while rescuing them. And as if that weren't enough, Joe V soon after loses both Joe VI and their pet Mini Chicken to a pair of Zombie Joes, then finds Peep alive, only for it to turn out to be a new Peep with no memory of him.. Mercifully though, it's there that his luck begins to shift, as Peep II lets him go and Joe V manages to leave the island with his life.
