YMMV: Soul Chess
  • Archive Binge: Good luck getting caught up very easily considering how the series is a Doorstopper
  • Draco in Leather Pants: While the author himself admits knows that his fabricated backstory for Cornelia doesn't excuse what she does, making this a subversion for him, since his intentions were to just show how Cornelia became what she is, there are fans see the effect this is having on Cornelia and giving her this treatment.
    • It is easy to give Kasumi this treatment as well considering her Dark and Troubled Past, but one must not forget that her reasons may or may not justify her actions. And there are still some who might forget that she's not the nicest person in the world.
  • Ear Worm: Shurenís incantation: Fire burn and fire roar, total destruction from mountain to shore. Does not help that it sounds very similar to the line Gargamel spouts in the opening sequence.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Vera, much to the author's own surprise.
  • Foe Yay: Between Mari and Treva, though itís lessened by the fact that Mari is a lesbian.
    • Quite a bit between Aizen and Lelouch, at least from Aizen's side of things considering how at the end of the Aizen's Revenge arc Lelouch just walked away with a case of Screw This, I'm Outta Here! and not even bothering to debate with Aizen.
    • Rita and Kasumi.
  • Fridge Brilliance: All of the matchups in the second battle of Karakura Town, which were set up by Lelouch are a case of this when the method to his madness is revealed.
  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: In chapter 31, Rukia draws her and Hisana attacking Byakuya. Come chapter 34, this becomes decidedly less amusing. It also came back to bite Byakuya during Lelouch's trial.
    • In chapter 78, Kendra says, as Komamura passes out, that the gang is going to be fine and that he can rest. Cue Hisagi dying.
    • In the omake of chapter 71, Tatsuki uses Shoryuken to defeat Jason. In chapter 80 her alternate persona slash sort of kind of Zanpakuto spirit, but not really Kaibun uses the move against Uryu
  • Harsher in Hindsight: There was speculation, but now that we know the reason, the hollow embryo that Lelouch removed from Nemu in chapter 27 is even more horrifying.
    • Remember Susannaís Convenient Miscarriage? That happened on Lelouchís birthday.
    • One example that applies to Canon, Chojiro's death. Soon after his fic death, the guy is killed off in Canon.
      • Following up on this Yamamoto dies in this fic too and now via the latest chapter as of this edit he's now Dead in Canon as well.
    • When Ichigo is later revealed to be alive he tells Cornelia that he would have helped her if she had tried to talk to him.
  • Heartwarming In Hindsight: See the What Could Have Been entry on the trivia page regarding Lelouch and Susanna after reading chapter 136. If there's not a smile on your face, there's probably something wrong with you Or you're not a Lelouch/Susanna fan.
  • He's Just Hiding: No one wants to believe that Ichigo is actually dead.
    • And heís not!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Keigo wants to go play with a fribee in chapter 52. Later in the chapter? Catch it. Catch it with your teeth.
    • Orihimeís BlazBlue Shout-Out becomes this when Roseís Finishing Move bears a striking resemblance to Hazamaís.
    • The name of the first Soul Reaper in existence is Feluca Tetelra Sharaimyn. In the omake of ch 134 the Soul Kingís true form is Fluttershy. Look at the name long enough, youíll notice the meaning and that this makes Feluca and the Soul King one in the same. This then begs the question: how did Feluca become a pony?
    • Unohana letting down her braid, being an absolute terror on the battlefield and her Dark and Troubled Past are a downplayed version of this given canon.
    • Kenpachi learning the name of his Zanpakuto, which has finally happened in canon.
    • Isshin being captain of the tenth division and being a member of the Shiba clan
  • Ho Yay: Byakuya can be very dedicated to Lelouch. However, Word of God says that this will never be canon.
    • Talbumosuke, likewise, can be extremely loyal to Aizen.
    • Byakuya has finally gotten over his hero worship, although he still holds extreme respect for Lelouch.
    • Tatsuki mentions that if Keigo was a different kind of guy...
    • Tensa Zangetsuís Undying Loyalty to Ichigo comes across as this if you read too much into it.
    • Ichigo telling Lelouch to look him in the eye raises quite a few eyebrows.
  • It Was His Sled: Parts of the Prelude to the Final Game arc, Eye of the Storm arc, Visored arc and Reapers and Heralds arc that are the same as canon are skipped over. Word of God also writes on the basis that all readers have seen the ins and outs of Bleach. On the bright side very rarely can the author be accused of not doing his research.
    • The same can now be extended to the two arcs that comprised of R1 and R2 of Code Geass since the whole point of them is to show what's in the background. There were several scenes that are noticable to give the reader a hint as to where in the series the scenes are taking place, but ultimately nothing that you can't just go to the anime and watch is used unless it can be, in the author's own words, changed or modified to add new information.
      • There is a whole laundry list of scenes people wanted to see that the author skipped over because he felt he couldn't add anything to the scene.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Several fans are harping on the point in the story where Lelouch will go to the World of Living during Code Geass canon some of which, upon inquiry even admitted they would stop reading if the author aborted that arc.
  • Les Yay: Cornelia and Nonette tend to come across as more than friends very often. Even when she was a teenager, Nonette would make flirtatious comments.
    • Kallen and Inoue have this Big sister/Little sister going on between them that has led to fans seeing them as more than just friends.
    • Yuna and Mari
    • Yoruichi and Soifon, who become an Official Couple.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Tsukishima crossed it for every YoruSoi fan when he Made Soifon completely forget about Yoruichi
    • Guinevere su Britannia crossed it by setting up a trap to have Cornelia to become a War Criminal with a mission that caused her to unintentionally kill innocent Britannian civilians knowing well of her mental condition.
    • Kasumi may have crossed for some when she killed her own child despite her mental state at the time.
    • Lelouch nearly crosses this for the members of the Soul Society, but Kendra stands up for him.
  • Never Live It Down: Ginrei still remembers an extremely sick joke that Lelouch once told.
    • Tatsuki mentions that Ichigo once yelled at a trash can. There was a whole on top of it, but no one can see those.
    • Renji is sure that Rukia will turn the reason he survived Yammy into this.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Unohanaís Bankai
    • Donít break the rules of Shunsuiís Bankai. The end result is not pretty.
    • Zero torturing Viletta before going ahead and killing her. In fact that whole scene at the beginning of 175 was like something straight out of a horror flick.
      • Only that? How about his attack on poor Nunnally?
  • Paranoia Fuel: Kasumi's speech when she hijacks the authorís notes and activates her Lotus-Eater Machine.
  • Possession Sue: One could argue a case of this for Captain of Squad 10 Lelouch Lamperouge; the author has denied this. While not a complete Sue, he does have moments of Sue-dom, particularly as a product of 'Sue-by-association' with Aizen and Lelouch's constant desire to one-up him.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: A few fans that didn't particularly like Rita did a complete 180 when she eradicated the Soul King and let Feluca become the Soul Queen.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: A lot of Nina haters probably liked Zero devouring her soul.
  • The Scrappy: Guinevere to some. Sheís just about everything we hate about the empire stuck up arrogant and downright diabolical. In a Crapsack World she makes Cornelia such the lesser of two evils (if you donít find her to be the Iron Woobie) that, for some, it goes right to making a case of Black and White Morality between the two sisters. Yeesh.
  • The Woobie: Orihime takes this trope Up to Eleven in the Within Zeroís Shadow arc. Seriously get that girl some help...or committed. Such a pity then that nothing was really done with the Taking A Level In Badass that resulted.
  • What an Idiot: Lelouch's propencity for gloating can get him into trouble, just like in his previous life.
    • It's actually worse than his previous life because it makes him look sadistic.
    • Kaien attacks Ichigo on Aizens advice. He knows that Aizen is the Big Bad, and he still listens to him.
    • Subverted when Lelouch fights Aizen head on, by himself. It was all part of his plan.
    • Shawlong. He monologues and passes vital information to Uryu.
    • Did Needles really think he was going to get away with attempting to rape Orihime or convince Ichigo to join in on the action. And then trying to spinelessly back out of it? The man is lucky Ichigo left him breathing.
    • Talbumosuke sending Gantebainne into town to test Segunda Etapa, and getting curb-stomped by Yoruichi; all it did was tip off Lelouch as to one of his best trump cards. Surely a supervised intra Espada battle would have been more productive; while it's explained in story that Tally didn't want to risk damaging his Espada in such an exercise, Ganty's abject performance sort of belies his argument.
    • In the same vein, Tally had less of a numerical disadvantage in the first battle (2-to-1 vs 3-to-1), yet played completely into Lelouch's hands by sacraficing his mooks basically for nothing in the first.
    • Kasumi not keeping a closer eye on Aizen; she knew he couldn't be trusted, yet did nothing to stop him from pulling a fast one and taking the power himself.
    • If Aizen's such a hassle, why not just forcibly reincarnate him? End of problem; could even considered a Fate Worse than Death to someone like Aizen.
    • Surely the idea was for everyone to fight Aizen together for the final battle; he did Ichigo the service of waiting for everyone else after him to show up. Kenpachi, being a Blood Knight, you can understand, but why did Stefan, Yhwach and Kensei, who have a bit more sense, try to fight him before the rest arrived?
