YMMV / Soul Chess

Go To

  • Fridge Brilliance: All of the matchups in the second battle of Karakura Town, which were set up by Lelouch are a case of this when the method to his madness is revealed.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In chapter 31, Rukia draws her and Hisana attacking Byakuya. Come chapter 34, this becomes decidedly less amusing. It also came back to bite Byakuya during Lelouch's trial.
    • In chapter 78, Kendra says, as Komamura passes out, that the gang is going to be fine and that he can rest. Cue Hisagi dying.
    • In the omake of chapter 71, Tatsuki uses Shoryuken to defeat Jason. In chapter 80 her alternate persona slash sort of kind of Zanpakuto spirit, but not really Kaibun uses the move against Uryu
    • There was speculation, but now that we know the reason, the hollow embryo that Lelouch removed from Nemu in chapter 27 is even more horrifying.
    • Remember Susanna’s Convenient Miscarriage? That happened on Lelouch’s birthday.
    • One example that applies to Canon, Chojiro's death. Soon after his fic death, the guy is killed off in Canon.
      • Following up on this Yamamoto dies in this fic too and now via the latest chapter as of this edit he's now Dead in Canon as well.
    • When Ichigo is later revealed to be alive he tells Cornelia that he would have helped her if she had tried to talk to him.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: See the What Could Have Been entry on the trivia page regarding Lelouch and Susanna after reading chapter 136. If there's not a smile on your face, there's probably something wrong with you Or you're not a Lelouch/Susanna fan.
  • He's Just Hiding: No one wants to believe that Ichigo is actually dead.
    • And he’s not!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Keigo wants to go play with a fribee in chapter 52. Later in the chapter? Catch it. Catch it with your teeth.
    • Orihime’s BlazBlue Shout-Out becomes this when Rose’s Finishing Move bears a striking resemblance to Hazama’s.
    • The name of the first Soul Reaper in existence is Feluca Tetelra Sharaimyn. In the omake of ch 134 the Soul King’s true form is Fluttershy. Look at the name long enough, you’ll notice the meaning and that this makes Feluca and the Soul King one in the same. This then begs the question: how did Feluca become a pony?
    • Some of the author's decisions have been amazingly prophetic, while others have been hilariously wide of the mark...
    • Unohana letting down her braid, being an absolute terror on the battlefield and her Dark and Troubled Past are a downplayed version of this given canon.
      • Some of Minazuki Zenmetsu's abilities aren't that far removed from her canon bankai's abilities.
    • Kenpachi learning the name of his Zanpakuto, which has finally happened in canon.
      • Kenpachi's admiration for Yachiru Hekira; now we know who the real first Yachiru was...and also Kenny's Lotus-Eater Machine dream, with Unohana as part of a Badass Family; we now know the two hate each other's guts.
      • Kenpachi's zanpakuto spirit being a huge manly Chick Norris expy. Now we know it's actually the cute little girl Yachiru Kusajishi.
    • Isshin being captain of the tenth division and being a member of the Shiba clan. Slight miss about how they are related (uncle and nephew, not cousins), but it's immaterial for the most part.
    • Rukia trying to get bankai. HAKKA NO TOGAME!!! Also, Renji being the Butt-Monkey who Did Not Get the Girl. In the last arc he Took a Level in Badass, and as of canon's epilogue has a Relationship Upgrade with Rukia, and is the father of her daughter Ichika.
    • Yhwach, and by extension the entire Vandenreich, being a nice guy. The more we learn about him, the more and more unlikely it looks. In retrospect, the idea that Lelouch was able to convince them to pull a Heel–Face Turn becomes this when we find out just how far back it goes.
    • The Stinger also gains a certain value of funny given recent developments.
    • Aizen managing to kill Yhwach, who had help. At present, the two aren't even comparable. In canon, when the two do cross swords, while Aizen probably does better than anyone else in the story against Godbach, he still loses quite handily.
    • Yamamoto ending up in Hell after his death while he waits to reincarnate. According to No Breathes From Hell this is exactly where he ended up in canon. In fact, this is the fate of ALL Captains.
  • Ho Yay: Byakuya can be very dedicated to Lelouch. However, Word of God says that this will never be canon.
    • Talbumosuke, likewise, can be extremely loyal to Aizen.
    • Byakuya has finally gotten over his hero worship, although he still holds extreme respect for Lelouch.
    • Tatsuki mentions that if Keigo was a different kind of guy...
    • Tensa Zangetsu’s Undying Loyalty to Ichigo comes across as this if you read too much into it.
    • Ichigo telling Lelouch to look him in the eye raises quite a few eyebrows.
    • On the female side, Cornelia and Nonette tend to come across as more than friends very often. Even when she was a teenager, Nonette would make flirtatious comments.
    • Kallen and Inoue have this Big sister/Little sister going on between them that has led to fans seeing them as more than just friends.
    • Yuna and Mari
    • Yoruichi and Soifon, who become an Official Couple.
  • It Was His Sled: Parts of the Prelude to the Final Game arc, Eye of the Storm arc, Visored arc and Reapers and Heralds arc that are the same as canon are skipped over. Word of God also writes on the basis that all readers have seen the ins and outs of Bleach. On the bright side very rarely can the author be accused of not doing his research.
    • The same can now be extended to the two arcs that comprised of R1 and R2 of Code Geass since the whole point of them is to show what's in the background. There were several scenes that are noticable to give the reader a hint as to where in the series the scenes are taking place, but ultimately nothing that you can't just go to the anime and watch is used unless it can be, in the author's own words, changed or modified to add new information.
      • There is a whole laundry list of scenes people wanted to see that the author skipped over because he felt he couldn't add anything to the scene.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Several fans are harping on the point in the story where Lelouch will go to the World of Living during Code Geass canon some of which, upon inquiry even admitted they would stop reading if the author aborted that arc.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Tsukishima crossed it for every YoruSoi fan when he made Soifon completely forget about Yoruichi
    • Guinevere su Britannia crossed it by setting up a trap to have Cornelia to become a War Criminal with a mission that caused her to unintentionally kill innocent Britannian civilians knowing well of her mental condition.
    • Kasumi may have crossed for some when she killed her own child despite her mental state at the time.
    • Lelouch nearly crosses this for the members of the Soul Society, but Kendra stands up for him.
  • Never Live It Down: Ginrei still remembers an extremely sick joke that Lelouch once told.
    • Tatsuki mentions that Ichigo once yelled at a trash can. There was a whole on top of it, but no one can see those.
    • Renji is sure that Rukia will turn the reason he survived Yammy into this.
