YMMV / SHINee

  • Actor Shipping: Minho co-starred with f(x)'s Sulli in 'To the Beautiful You' which has caused a lot of fans to start shipping them in real life.
  • Ear Worm:
    • "Ring Ding Dong" is particularly bad in regards to the chorus. Ring ding dong ring ding dong... Fantastic fantastic elastic elastic...
    • I'M SO CURIOUS YEAAAH
    • EVERYBODY, EVERYBODY, EVERY-EVERYBODY
    • PPEOMPEOMPEOMPEOMPEOM, PPEOMPEOM, PPEOMPEOMPEOMPEOMPEOM~
    • SINGING HAAAALLELUJAHHHH, YOU GOT ME SINGIN' HAAAALLELUUUUJAHH
    • Neomu aremdaun daun daun daun view!
    • The entirety of Wowowow. Never experiment with auto-tune again, boys.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Had a kerfluffle with BBC!Sherlock of all fandoms when the new album came out. All due to confusion over the usage of Name's the Same tags on Tumblr. Yes.
    • As of late, quite a heated one with EXO.
  • Follow the Leader: SHINee is known as a contemporary band who set trends when it comes to new genres, fashion and concepts.
  • He Really Can Act: Minho has been the butt of many jokes within the fandom about how terrible his acting was in "To the Beautiful You" back in 2012. Well, flash forward three years and he straight-up astonished fans with his performance in the web drama "Because its the First Time" where he plays a character who is struggling with his feelings for his best friend. The scene where he breaks down in tears after realizing that he is in love with her, even after convincing himself that he isn't, is particularly impressive. Unfortunately, the general public still sees him as a sub par actor.
    • Onew had only ever acted in sitcoms, so fans didn't really know what to expect when he was announced to play a doctor in melodrama "Descendants of the Sun." However, his acting after losing his patient in a war zone and his performance as a guilt ridden doctor in the subsequent episodes really made an impression on both the fandom and the public.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: On an episode of Hello Baby Jonghyun admitted he had a crush on actress Shin Sekyung. They began dating some time later.
  • Ho Yay:
    • In spades with all the members, but Jonghyun and Key deserve special note, to the extent that Key usually refers to Jonghyun as "honey". There's an entire backlog of eyebrow-raising moments between them, including playing the pocky game, wearing couple rings, matching clothes, 4 marriage illusions and saying they would date each other if they were a girl.
Key: What do we call this relationship?
Jonghyun: I wonder what should it be called...
    • Minho and Taemin definitely have a very brotherly relationship and are often seen hugging, messing around together, and stuck playing video games.
    • Particularly in 2015, Jonghyun and Onew have been so into each other that they were seen hugging and messing around in the middle of a photo shoot for Vogue Japan. Jonghyun also went out of his way to say that he would date Onew if he was a girl out of all the members.
    • Outside of just the other members, Key has plenty of friends, including (as of SM's merging with Woollim) labelmate, Woohyun. Once when Woohyun was accused of texting his girlfriend while brushing his teeth he replied, "it's not my girlfriend, it's Key!"
    • Dispatch tried to catch Taemin on a date but instead he was hanging out with fellow labelmate and best friend Kai of EXO, who collaborated with him on his solo mini album.
  • Internet Backdraft:
    • A small but major one: In 2013, at SM Town Week, Onew and Minho donned mustaches, poncho tunics, and sombreros (fake Rick James dreads for Minho) and danced to "Macarena". On one side, there were people who were shaking their head in shame because of the culturally insensitive display and on the other side, there were angry fans screaming "HE DIDN'T MEAN IT".
    • Shinee has had a lot of... not-so-shiny moments that, for the sake of not starting any wars on this page, won't be mentioned but they are catalogued here.
    • With the release of Jonghyun's album '좋아(She Is)', one of the songs "Moon" has this particular lyric: "Iím gonna do what I want, even if you say no / In the end, your lips will be on top of my cheek", which has left a nasty taste in some fans' mouths especially since Jonghyun is known for his feminist, progressive views.
  • Narm: "The SHINee World (Doo-Bop)" attempts to be a Boastful Rap, judging by the Korean lyrics. Any attempts to take the song seriously, however, are lost by the line "we got the flow it's break your naughty", and it all just goes downhill from there.
  • Tastes Like Diabetes: Their "Hello" concept.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Usually Taemin bears the brunt of this, possibly because he's the youngest, or maybe because he's very, very pretty...
    • There's also Key, who's really fond of girl group dances.
    • Minho is definitely not exempt: a Japanese tabloid once mistook him for Changmin's date.
  • WTH, Costuming Department?:
    • Key's and Minho's pants look a little...weird and out of place during their 2011 K-Pop Music Fest part in Australia.
    • Taemin's pencil leggings in "Dream Girl"
    • The entire 90s styling for their "View" promotions, with jeans tucked into socks, oversized belts and Onew's grandpa pants.
  • Yoko Oh No: It was confirmed in October 2010 that Jonghyun had been dating a popular actress, Shin Sekyung. This was the general reaction from both his fangirls towards her and her fanboys towards him. However, it seems like many fans may have actually accepted the relationship because SHINee's fanclub numbers have been on the rise. Unfortunately the couple broke up due to busy schedules.
