YMMV / Pet Alien

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The show is far more well-known than the original toyline.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: Some fans shipped Tommy and Melba together, despite most of their interactions being antagonistic (particularly on Melba's end) and Tommy outright admitting he isn't trying to win Melba's heart in "The Guest Who Wouldn't Leave... Ever".
  • Friendly Fandoms: With Space Goofs, since both series are wacky comedy cartoons focusing on aliens living on Earth that aired in 2005.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The show is noticeably more popular in France than in its native country, which may be why it got a second season to begin with despite its poor ratings. This can be attributed to the show's title - Alien Bazar (Alien Chaos) - which is widely considered a more interesting title that better reflects the show's premise compared to the rather basic and non-indicative Pet Alien.
  • Growing the Beard: The show started off rather sluggishly-paced, with very poor animation and uninspired storylines. However, about halfway through Season 1, each of these elements was addressed, with improved animation, funnier jokes and more inventive plotlines, and they continued to improve throughout Season 2.
  • Ho Yay: Dinko and Tommy's friendship has some strange undertones. They are very physically affectionate with each other, and Dinko is sporadically implied to be in love with Tommy while never displaying any attraction to the opposite sex.
    • In "Return of the Ghastly Gobbler", when Tommy asks Dinko what he'd wish for with the turkey wishbone, one of Dinko's Imagine Spots has him surrounded by Tommy clones and another has him rescuing Tommy in a dark alley while Tommy has hearts in his eyes.
    • In "Terror in My Nose", Dinko keeps a picture of him and Tommy in a heart-shaped photo frame and bemoans having to leave the lighthouse in a way akin to a break-up.
    • In "It Came from the Fan Club", Dinko forms a fan club dedicated to Tommy. The only other member of said club is Gabby, whose attraction to Tommy is juxtaposed with Dinko's own.
    • In "The Night of Two Tommys +1", Dinko creates numerous Tommy clones just to be around Tommy more.
    • The ending to "The Earth Boy Who Needed Protection" has Tommy and Dinko getting stuck together and unable to separate. Tommy wants the problem solved, but Dinko sounds gleeful at the idea of being stuck to Tommy forever.
Dinko: Look on the bright side: we can now spend every second of every minute of every hour of every day together!
  • Tear Jerker: "Unleashed Beast of Fury" has Gumpers becoming convinced Tommy doesn't want him living in the lighthouse anymore and leaving; the big lug's heartbroken when Tommy (who was playing hide and seek) tells him to go away. Fortunately, Tommy eventually realizes what's going on and reassures Gumpers that he loves him just the way he is.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Due to trying to do 3D animation on a small budget, a lot of the character designs look very bizarre and inhuman. While the aliens look fairly cartoony and expressive for the time, the human characters like Tommy and Melba look very off-putting and unintentionally creepy.
  • Vanilla Protagonist: Tommy Cadle. While he has a few minor quirks of his own, for the most part, he's a normal kid who the audience is meant to relate to and primarily acts as a Straight Man for the wackier, more dynamic aliens to bounce off of.
  • The Woobie: Tommy Cadle. He often has to endure the aliens' antics, is bullied by Clinton, bossed around by Melba Manners and is often blamed for things that the aliens caused. One can't help but take pity on him.
