YMMV / Land of the Lost

Regarding the film:

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Apparently, combining a cheesy Saturday morning 70s show with a vulgar Will Ferrell comedy wasn’t exactly a recipe for success.
  • Awesome Music: Michael Giacchino comes up trumps again. Bonus points for calling his end title track "End Credits Can Suck It!"
  • Creepy Cute: The baby Sleestak in The Stinger. A sinister, hissing lizard creature, yet also still a cute little hatchling.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Grumpy the T. rex and Big Alice the Allosaurus are two of the most praised things about the movie, due to being more faithful recreations of characters from the show than any of the human characters, but with CGI that makes them look realistic and frightening. Grumpy's It Can Think grudge against Rick is highly praised and fans mourn how Big Alice dies in her first scene.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Marshall's animosity towards Matt Lauer feels a lot less ironic after Lauer was fired from NBC amidst sexual harassment accusations (he can suck it, indeed). Worse, his last scene has him being forcefully removed from the Today set.
  • One-Scene Wonder: The giant crab scene.
  • Rooting for the Empire: Marshall is such a jerkass, you seriously want Grumpy to just eat him already...
  • Special Effects Failure: Despite being better than the series, the movie's effects sometimes suffers this, especially with the more obvious CG dinosaurs. The green screen in some parts of the film are also rather unconvincing.
  • Squick
    • The Sleestak sex scene.
    • The giant mosquito scene.
    • The drug scene and its aftermath.
    • Rick and Holly becoming a couple, considering she was his daughter in the show. Particularly squicky when he gives her a compliment at one point that makes no sense except as something a father would say to a daughter.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: More like, they changed it back, now it sucks: Some viewers were disappointed the Sleestaks were returned to their Creature from the Black Lagoon-like appearances from the 70's version rather than their more intimidating versions from the 90's reboot.
  • This Is Your Premise on Drugs: About the only way you can explain the movie to someone without looking like a fool.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The CG is quite impressive and believable. Which was yet another way it sharply contrasted the original series.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The movie. Despite being based on a Saturday kiddie show, it's really and truly not for children.
