YMMV / Joey's Special Experience

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: The series is PACKED with loads of these.
Bullet Train: Ohhoh Joost, use my secret train... THE CHINESE ARE COMING!

  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • What's worse than the Holocaust? (Coconut) Germany revealing its sequel!
    • During Joost's final battle with God, he reveals his plans for Europe and for their (already broken) relationship. He then proceeds to reveal that he's a racist and that Joost is one of his slaves...
    • Enjabu, a living sex doll who got her son pregnant. She also conceived Mr. Long Crotch by having sex with a horse, and Long Crotch's canon name in JJBA is Hol HORSE, which makes this both disgusting and brilliant.
    • Golden Heat offering a minor to have a threesome with him and Mike Tyson.
    • Most of the funniest scenes in Yes are the ones that involve Bullet Train or God trying to impress (if not outright sexually harass) Joost with the most unflattering, creepy, and bizarre flirting attempts ever.
    • The Iron Man/Valentine's Day arc. Just... the entire thing... from a subplot about aborting a head pregnancy to all the scenes involving Jotara and Zeus together:
Zeus: Hello, Giota! Go to the hole and let me ride your back. The current method is simple.
    Jotara: ...
Zeus: Well, I'll be your brother. What are you looking for? I CALL YOU "BROTHER"!

  • Epileptic Trees: As a series built completely on Fanon and that is already weird by default, wacky theories are not only expected, but encouraged, although some become more accepted than others.
    • The Great EU Conspiracy is a very complex theory originated by a group of members of the JSE Discord server. It proposes the idea that Joost started the EU and that there was a central world government controlling the manga's world behind the scenes, among other things. The theory gained a lot of traction but it was still somewhat divisive. Eventually, the theory got Jossed by a flashback halfway though Yes, although some very lesser details of it, like the child soldiers part, are still deemed as canon.
    • In the early days of the series, the theory that the story takes place in a videogame world was common because of all the videogame logic and gamer terminology used, as well as references to well-known game franchises. However, this theory was and still is quite divisive, so it quickly became discarded, but there's still a minority of fans that believe in it. Mentioning this theory in JSE circles nowadays often triggers a very negative response from the fans.
    • Due to a quite ominous ending chapter page title showcased in Modern Warfare that reads "risk of gas leak", a theory has appeared that indicates that the in-universe author Archie is a completely normal guy dying from carbon monoxide poisoning and JSE is him trying to write down his memoirs, but the carbon monoxide is making him hallucinate and descend into madness and that's why the series is so bizarre.

  • Fan Nickname:
    • The main translator BlueJoseph often uses the name "Steve" online, even though that isn't their actual first name. The name comes from the popular Joey quote "only Steve can defeat another Steve". The other translators, on the other hand, are known as the "Priests (of Archie)".
    • Luigi's real name was never revealed in the story; he was named that by the fandom due to the name of his brother being Mario.
    • Joker, Jotara, and their harem in Third Part have been given the name of the "Star Warriors" by the fandom, in the same way that their JJBA counterparts are often referred to as the Stardust Crusaders.

  • Fountain of Memes:
    • God, due to his memorable (and deranged) phrases and his absurdly toxic relationship with Joost.
    • Erin, due to her Ax-Crazy-ness and her violent satanic rituals.
    • Bullet Train, because of his bizarre, horny exclamations and obsession with Joost.
    • Mr. Automobile, due to her extreme capitalism, absurdist phrases and, again, obsession with wanting to have sex with the protagonist.
    • Basically the entire family of Juan Pedro, due to how fucked up it is.
    • Dragon, because of his incredibly disturbing backstory, even for Joey standards.
    • The in-universe author himself Archie is also a victim of this, thanks to his unhinged takes and bizarre personality exhibited in the author notes.

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The character of Dragon made his debut as the Joey version of Caesar Zeppeli in 2022. In 2023, The JOJOlands, the newest part of the original manga, would introduce a character named Dragona.
    • First Part has a big focus on rap music, which makes the fact that the 2024 Phantom Blood musical adaptation has rap numbers even funnier.

  • LGBT Fanbase: JSE has a rather large one, due to its huge amount of LGBTQ+ characters and plots and for "making canon" a lot of very popular LGBT ships and headcanons/character interpretations from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

  • Memetic Mutation: Oh boy... What happens when you let a bad translation service re-write an already bizarre manga with thousands of well known memes? Hilarity ensues:
    • The ending chapter notes: Explanation
      • "WHAT A STRANGE ADVENTURE"
      • "AMAZING YO-YO ACTIVITY"
      • "JEWS AND PROPAGANDA"
      • "KING FITNESS WARNING!"
      • "SAD EVENTS IN THE RIVER"
      • "YES, IT WAS A GREAT ADVENTURE"
      • "RISK OF GAS LEAK"
      • "JO"
      • "GOOD NEWS ABOUT ADVENTURE TIME"
      • "SAD MUSIC IN THE RIVER"
      • "JOE'S BI, GOOD NEWS"
      • "PLAY JOJO'S BEAUTY ADVENTURE ONLINE"
      • "SHARK'S EXTERNAL HISTORY"
      • "JOE'S FEET"
      • "CONGRATULATIONS FATHER HIROHIKO!""
      • "YOU SHOULD KISS STRANGELY"
      • "MY PRESENTATION IS VERY GOOD"
      • "YAY HISTORY!!"
      • "NEW CANDIED ALMONDS BUSINESS"
      • "JOJO IS REPLACING YOU SOON"
    • "XENIS?" Explanation
    • "DIVORCE TIME!!" Explanation
    • "I did not ask"Explanation
    • "This man is eating nuts!" Explanation
    • "You dirty cheater!" Explanation
    • "LET HIM EAT!!"Explanation
    • "Correct! I have become silly!" Explanation
    • "Happy birthday, big horse."Explanation
    • "She died peacefully after killing a family of 8, maybe 9."Explanation
    • “I murdered 13 childrens"Explanation
    • "I run because I love men! Oh! Love is endless!"Explanation

  • Narm: The entire series practically breathes this to the max. Many moments that would be dramatic in another context (such as Joost and Joker getting sexually harassed repeatedly, the deaths of many characters, and important divorces) get ruined here due to the sheer absurdity of the dialogue.

  • Quirky Work: Alien gods, Nazis with esoteric beliefs about coconuts, very unusual pregnancies and births, a lot of Faux Symbolism, the most absolutely bizarre alternate history ever, Mario wearing a Nintendo DS as a piece of lingerie, soul-fusing, random sports subplots, horses, incest, space travel, an apocalyptic cockroach migration, several wars, India getting destroyed and sunk to the depths of the ocean, a tax agent committing vehicular manslaughter because he never got a circumcision, "Gaming Walls", living sex dolls, modern Aztecs that fight with fish, possessed ice cream, cyborgs, a vampire rapping while everything burns down... JSE is a quite special experience.

  • Shocking Moments: Despite nothing in this series being predictable, some plot twists reached a whole other level, somehow making so much sense in hindsight despite the randomness of the translations.
    • Eren (possibly) murdering Joost.
    • Straizus's cancer diagnosis reveal.
    • The Reveal of John Bestium as Cocaine's abusive father, and also his reincarnation as John of the Dead.
    • Cocaine actually being a robot.
    • Zeus, a character mentioned in the very first chapter who was assumed to just be another name for God, appears in person in Part 3 as Iron Man.
    • Jotara’s father, the wandering jazz musician, being revealed as En Doula/Jehova.
    • J Gay being revealed to be Poland's sister.
    • The Pope returning and being Avdoline's father.

  • The Woobie: Cockyoin, a tragic boy that was abused by his father and turned into a robot against his will, who only finds happiness in sex and drugs
    • Iron Woobie: Dragon Cepelis. He was neglected, sexually assaulted and kidnapped by different members of his family, seen the horrors of war from the front lines, had to kill and eat his father, and was forced to carry a teenage pregnancy, and yet, he still goes on with his life to become a legendary Bacon warrior.
    • Jerkass Woobie: Joost could be considered one, even though during First Part she is presented as a clear victim; suffering from constant emotional torment, psychological, physical and sexual abuse from basically everyone and most of her fights are actually her just defending herself, but this still doesn't excuse some of her extremely mean behaviour during the early stages and the ending. But again, the ending of Yes is also notorious for being a festival of Mind Screw and Ambiguous Situation after Ambiguous Situation, so YMMV depending on your interpretation of the final fight.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Since is it not uncommon for Google Translate to change the gender of the characters, there are many of them which trigger this:
    • Joost looks hyper masculine, but she's actually genderfluid/enby leaning more into the feminine side (much to the disappointment of Bullet Train). Her exaggeratedly long penis certainly doesn't help.
    • Baroque Cepelis looks like a man but is actually thought to be bigender or at least somewhere on the non-binary spectrum, and is even referred as "Baroness Zeppelia" a few times.
    • Similarly to Joost, the Collumnists are all female, yet they look extremely masculine. Then again, they also suffer from a Gag Penis...
    • Sushi Q looks like a lady, but he is eventually revealed to be a man.
    • Lanzar looks like a woman, but he's referred explicitly as a man both by the heroes and by his brother/lover
    • From Fuji's World Wisdom: Number of Ugly White Snakes: Fuji is explicitely referred as a man but looks like a girl.
    • From Man!: James looks a lot like a little girl but he's actually a boy and is mostly referred by he/him pronouns.

  • Watch It for the Meme: The main reason why the series got popular, specially in its early stages. Many people on Twitter and Reddit were curious about the series after stumbling upon with memetic gems such as Dio calling Jonathan a cheater and wanting a divorce, Kars "becoming silly" or George Joestar saying complete nonsense.
