YMMV / Japan Animator Expo

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: Ibuseki Yoruni is hated more in the west due to resembling the director of the short's political leanings.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: It'd be great if more people knew about the Expo for hearing about the experimentation, the fact that Hideaki Anno is heading it, or even for other, less exciting reasons. But a lot of people probably first heard about it because of ME!ME!ME!.
    • Robot on the Road is definitely more remembered for Mina's very detailed breast physics, panty shots and uncensored shower scene than anything else.
  • Common Knowledge: One common interpretation of ME!ME!ME! is that it's purely anti-otaku and that Shuu-chan's 2D obssession was the direct cause of his breakup with Hana-chan. The story pretty plainly shows that during the relationship itself, anime and manga were barely a factor and didn't come up at all in the breakup scene in Shuu's mind while in the present it serves as a coping mechanism.
  • Complete Monster: The惻Ultraman: Jackal vs. Ultraman (Link): Demon King Jackal is a demonic space overlord imprisoned by Ultraman King long ago for his crimes. Escaping from Hell's Black Hole, he begins a brutal campaign of revenge against the Ultras, starting by murdering Ultraman in the guise of Zetton and hurling his corpse into the sun. He would then hunt the Ultra Brothers down one by one, brutally murdering them, including killing Astra in the guise of Zoffy in front of his brother Leo. In an attempt to hunt down the surviving brothers in hiding, he would conquer and enslave Earth, having his minions round up innocent civilians and kill them to try and lure his enemies out. When Melos gains the upper hand in their duel, Jackal feigns surrender and begs for his life, only to attempt to kill Melos when he spares his life. Confronted by Zoffy in the guise of Melos, he would fire his Jackal Destruction Ray directly into a crowd of his own troops in an attempt to kill his foe. Despite having minimal screentime, Jackal spends every moment allotted being as vile and monstrous as possible.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • The Meme clones from ME!ME!ME!. ME!ME!ME! is also this for the entire Expo.
    • Those who browse /a/ tend to like the woman from 20 min. Walk and Obake-chan more.
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: After the release of GIRL, theories about who the main character is and whatever the hell her journey, the crumbling man, and the literal flower girls meant ran wild.
  • Evil Is Cool: The Meme clones and HANA from ME!ME!ME!
  • Fanon:
    • After the release of GIRL, fans tended to believe the cause of Shuu-chan and Hana-chan's breakup was due to Shuu-chan cheating on her with Kami-sama while she was still emotionally vulnerable. Ignoring that Kami-sama is VERY heavily implied to be a lesbian and more likely to be in love with Hana.
    • There's also a running theory that Hana-chan was the cheater, and his depression and HANA's monstrous appearance are a result of his heartbreak. It's quite a different take from the other one.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • "Cockroach Girl" for the protagonist of 20 min. Walk.
    • "the Singing Robot short" for YAMADELOID.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Some viewers looked at ENDLESS NIGHT and saw romantic subtext in the pair skating interlude, ignoring that the man the protagonist skates with is himself, but older.
      • This reaction proved Hilarious in Hindsight, as the short essentially served as a thematic pilot for Yuri!!! on Ice (since both ENDLESS NIGHT and Yuri!!! on Ice were directed by Sayo Yamamoto), a series acclaimed for its LGBT themes and relationships. Perhaps in a nod to the original short, the credits of the final episode feature a pair skate between Official Couple Yuri and Viktor.
    • Some viewers believe that Kami-sama is a lesbian, given that she only has a breakdown when she sees Hana and not Shuu.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Most people came to see ME!ME!ME! or the Evangelion shorts.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Amongst all that Fanservice, ME!ME!ME! at its core is the story of a young man dealing with depression and heavy guilt after breaking up with his girlfriend, and delving into an unhealthy anime obsession afterwards to stave off the pain. It's usually more known for the cute, busty Meme clones who fight him and eat him alive.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Fans of Space Patrol Luluco watch SEX & VIOLENCE with MACHSPEED to figure out the context behind Episode 3-3.
    • ENDLESS NIGHT is seen as Sayo Yamamoto's training grounds for her work on Yuri!!! on Ice.
  • Tough Act to Follow: While GIRL was mostly well-regarded by fans, many say it didn't live up to the hype of the previous Yoshizaki short (ME!ME!ME!).
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Most of the shorts fall under this. But evangelion-Another Impact, as directed by Shinji Aramaki and animated by Sola Digital Arts, is probably the best looking of the entire series.
