Warning! All spoilers below are unmarked.

It's virtually impossible to list tropes for this web series without spoiling everything or creating Self-Fulfilling Spoilers because of the large amount of twists and Murder Mystery-related tropes it contains.

  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Following the events of Chapter 1, Teruko Tawaki, the protagonist, became this for some fans. Many were surprised by their Jerkass behavior during the first trial; while this is undeniably a result of feeling betrayed twice, this still created a split in the fanbase over their behavior, between those who feel their reactions were justified by the circumstances and those who feel they took it too far. Still others have been drawn in by this conflict, finding their character more compelling for their morally gray attitude.
    • Ace Markey is just as divisive as Teruko, if not more so. While he’s undeniably a complete Jerkass, whether that’s entertaining or obnoxious depends on who you ask. For some, Ace is funny in how blatantly disrespectful and petty he is, especially considering his extreme cowardliness and over-reactions (before Chapter 2 at least). To others, he’s incredibly irritating and can’t spend a single conversation without arguing with someone or getting angry over nothing, making Ace come across as one-note and almost unbelievably unlikable, which only became more apparent after Chapter 1. It doesn’t help that Ace constantly bullies Nico for very little reason, who is a relatively popular character by comparison. However, some fans appreciate him respecting Nico’s pronouns and not questioning their identity after they’re forcibly outed, despite being perfectly able to continue bullying Nico for said gender identity.
  • Draco in Leather Pants:
    • Some fans treat Teruko Tawaki's insensitive and abrasive behavior during the first trial and afterwards as completely justified, while others feel they crossed the line with their complete Lack of Empathy towards Min, telling her former friend that they deserved to be executed for trying to save her from Xander. Chapter 2 winds up feeling like a direct refutation of their behavior, with multiple characters calling Teruko out on being needlessly hostile or callous.
    • Ever since David’s true nature has been revealed, he has gotten a huge increase in his fanbase, and is blindly loved and simped for by many viewers, in a similar vein to canon antagonists such as Nagito and Kokichi. This is ignoring the fact that David has shown to be a callous, possibly sociopathic, liar who uses people for his own benefits and so far has not been shown any true redeeming qualities. Some of this is understandable, due to Evil Is Cool at play, not to mention there’s been only one episode so far that shows the real David, so fans haven’t really gotten a full examine of his character other than being an entertainingly awful person. However, many fans also ignore that he willingly pressured Nico into coming out against their will, which could have had very negative long-term effects.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Teruko Tawaki, the protagonist herself, is a particuarly shining example of this trope. After Xander died, she has been downright cruel, insensitive, and borderline callous towards the cast, especially Xander and Min. However, given the fact that she's been betrayed not once, but twice, really makes her behavior at least somewhat understandable considering the circumstances. It doesn't help that the cast refused to hear her out when she claimed to be innocent. And that's not even considering Teruko's past. Her horrible luck has resulted in so many terrible injuries, often resulting her going to the hospital, only to end up in debt because of the bills. She also had no identity, so Teruko had to constantly infiltrate schools in order to even recieve a proper education by pretending to be another student. Whenever she found out, Teruko had to run away again. Her life is so terrible that she geniunely does not want to escape the killing game, as the life there is better than the outside. Teruko at least has a hotel-like home with proper food and shelter, without her having to decide between eating and paying the bills. There's not even anyone she's waiting for on the outside.
    • Arei Nageishi is a cruel bully with a manipulative streak who no one really likes, but in reality, she hates herself and is only the way she is due to the fact that for almost all of her life, she was abused by her older sisters and her classmates, to the point of being hospitalized multiple times and being sent ropes multiple times with suicide dares. She eventually learned the lesson in her mind that the only way to get by in the world was to be cruel to others - and ultimately she tries to be better due to her wanting to be a better person, but just not knowing how to, before dying before she can really improve a lot.
  • Older Than They Think: A New Hope (Danganronpa) pulled off the "first kill before motive" before this series came out.
  • Ron the Death Eater:
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: We're clearly supposed to see Nico as wrong and just as bad as Ace when they try to kill him, the problem is that Ace's complete lack of redeeming characteristics and the constant harassment he does against Nico and the fact that the only other possible way of avoid the harassment would be to completely isolate themselves from the group, make them seem less just as bad as Ace and more a victim of abuse who was pushed to their limit. In the same vein, while J's criticism of Nico nearly killing the other classmates in their way of "silencing" Ace is valid, their motivations for killing Ace are truly no worse than most of the sympathetic killers in the franchise who accepted the same risks.
