- Audience-Alienating Era: The film came out during Madonna's Hotter and Sexier period in the early 90s that ended with the release of Bedtime Stories.
- Fetish Retardant: As Todd in the Shadows noted when reviewing the film, in trying to follow Basic Instinct the Michael Douglas analogue was Willem Dafoe, a not very arousing choice given he lacks similar good looks - Todd highlighted that any time he smiles, it just looks like a Slasher Smile.
- Hollywood Homely: Joanna is presented as the frumpy/dowdy alternative to Rebecca—brown hair, prim clothes—even though her nude scene makes it clear she's a very attractive woman herself.
- Narm: Too many scenes, but namely Rebecca acting all weepy over her lover's death. Whether due to Madonna's acting or the poor writing is uncertain.
- No Yay: Willem Dafoe doing sex scenes. 'Nuff said.
- Retroactive Recognition: Julianne Moore as Sharon in one of her earlier film roles.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: As Ken Begg points out in his review "It finally just hit me that a major problem with this picture is that there isn’t a single vaguely likable character in the whole deal. Frank is a colossal, adulterous jerk. Rebecca is at best a slutty weirdo, at worst a cold-blooded killer. Garrett is a doofus who prosecutes people under the most absurd rationales imaginable and does so poorly. Even the victim was an old pervert. Now, this isn't necessarily fatal, but for it not to be, the film must be extremely well made. Needless to say, this is not the case here."
- Took the Bad Film Seriously: Everyone involved is doing their best but the ridiculous script and poor direction badly undermine their intent and show that there's dialogue even the likes of Willem Dafoe, Frank Langella and Julianne Moore can't make work.
- The Un-Twist: Given how blatantly obvious it was that Rebecca was the killer, no savvy viewer was surprised when the evidence started pointing to... Joanne. Of course, the evidence against her was too obvious as well (disliked Rebecca, was in love with the victim, also stood to inherit if he died), so it wasn't a shock when Rebecca turned out to be guilty after all.
