- Box Office Bomb: Budget of $30 million, final gross of $13.2 million.
- Enforced Method Acting:
- Madonna asked for Willem Dafoe to really be restrained during the sex scenes so that his reactions would be real.
- She also avoided Julianne Moore as much as possible so that the tension between their characters would be just as realistic.
- Follow the Leader: Among the many criticisms of this film is that it's a blatant ripoff of Basic Instinct, while Rebecca is clearly an Expy of Catherine (Madonna was among the actresses considered for the part, and for the part that Catherine herself is an Expy of—Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction)
- Star-Derailing Role: Both Willem Dafoe and Madonna saw their film careers in The '90s get battered by this flop. Madonna recovered slightly when Evita became a hit, only for the consecutive failures of The Next Best Thing and Swept Away to snuff that for good. Her music has been her primary focus since then, besides directing the derided box office bomb W.E. (2011). Dafoe's career was restricted to supporting roles for a few years until his resurgence with Shadow of the Vampire and Spider-Man.
