Rainbow Skies Forever is a webcomic by Doctor Glasgow (Ennui GO!, Black Hole (2019)) that was originally posted to their DeviantArt and Tumblr accounts between 2014 and 2015. The full comic (as well as some extras) was later uploaded to ComicFury in 2020.

The comic centers on Ashley Lockheart, a young martial artist who lives a fairly average life with her family and friends. One day, her scientist father ends up assigned to a new project: study a mysterious substance brought in by an ambitious new employee. It quickly becomes apparent that there's more to the substance and the employee than there initially seems to be, though...and the more he delves into the substance, the more Ashley's life ends up going downhill.

While a second part was planned and teased, Doc ultimately put it on the backburner; per their words, while the Kickstarter to help fund the series was a success, it wasn't enough of one to warrant continuing. However, that doesn't mean Rainbow Skies Forever was gone for good; past versions of Ashley's parents have made appearances in Ennui GO!, and the ninth volume ended up picking up where RSF left off. As such, tropes regarding how the RSF characters act in Ennui GO! can be found on that comic's trope page.

Now has it's own characters page.

Rainbow Skies Forever contains examples of:

  • A Birthday, Not a Break: Ashley ends up losing her mom and being forced to kill her dad on her birthday.
  • Abusive Parents: As Lucian's sanity goes on a downwards spiral, he becomes this to his daughters, denigrating them and beating them over trivial things.
  • Adaptational Name Change: In the ComicFury re-uploads, Ketsuo's name is changed to Katsuo; on his reference sheet, he's referred to as Akihiro (though that could be his surname).
  • Affectionate Nickname: Lucian calls Ashley "Blackbird". It turns into Terms of Endangerment after the corruption really takes hold of him.
  • Alcoholic Parent: Alex's dad is one, which Ashley uses as a comparison point when discussing how Lucian's changed for the worse.
  • Ambiguous Situation: When we first meet Ketsuo, he seems perfectly innocent; it isn't until his second appearance that he starts acting creepy. It's not confirmed whether he was a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing all along or if the black substance he found corrupted him like he corrupted Lucian.
  • Archnemesis Dad: Ultimately, Lucian becomes this to Ashley.
  • Artifact of Doom: The black substance Ketsuo found; it was hidden at the bottom of a temple, it apparently "seemed to suck all light and warmth from the room", and it has a corrupting influence on those around it.
  • Big Bad: Ketsuo, whose corruption of Lucian ends up triggering everything else that happens in the plot.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Bastian, Ashley, and Alex, respectively.
  • Book Ends: The comic begins and ends on Ashley's birthday, one year apart.
  • Cut Himself Shaving: After Lucian beats her, Gabrielle tries to explain away the bruises by claiming she tripped and fell. Ashley doesn't buy it.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Lucian's magic-induced corruption and how it affects his personality is pretty similar to watching a parent fall into substance abuse and start mistreating their family because of it. Ashley even draws parallels between Lucian's behavior and that of Alex's alcoholic father.
  • Downer Ending: The comic ends with both of Ashley's parents dead and her sobbing on the ground, traumatized by everything that's happened to her.
  • Forced Transformation: Ketsuo forcibly turns Soleil into a nigh-mindless beast at the end.
  • Good Parents: The latter's concerns about Ashley's hobbies aside, Lucian and Kirsty are good parents to both their daughters. Sadly, this doesn't last.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Ketsuo turns Soleil into a mindless beast...which promptly rips his arm off and forces him to run.
  • Hope Spot: Lucian seems to turn back to his old self when Ashley tells him that Kirsty died...only for him to snarl and claim she was weak, the corruption fully taking hold.
  • Nightmare Face: Those corrupted by Ketsuo's magic are able to pull off some pretty scary, Body Horror-induced facial expressions.
  • Offing the Offspring: A fully corrupted Lucian tries to kill Ashley during the climax. She ends up killing him instead.
  • Parental Neglect: Bastian's parents are always busy, and are never around for him or his sister.
  • Patricide: Ashley is ultimately forced to kill her father in the end.
  • Ship Tease: Ashley and Bastian clearly have crushes on each other; aside from one potential date, it doesn't get much focus.
  • True Companions: No matter how bad their respective home lives get, Ashley, Bastian, and Alex all have each other to lean on.
  • Wanted a Gender-Conforming Child: Kirsty wishes that Ashley would enjoy more feminine hobbies as opposed to martial arts, though she slowly grows to appreciate her daughter's interests as the comic progresses.
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot: Ashley ends up vomiting after killing her father.
  • You Are Grounded!: Lucian ends up grounding Ashley until she gets a passing grade in math. The fact that this is his immediate response considering he was a reasonable parent beforehand is the first sign of how badly the corruption's affecting him.
