"Oh! It appears we have someone new to help us with our explanation. Why don't you introduce yourself?"

The Funkin’ Files (formerly known as Friday Night Funkin': The Walten Files) is a Game Mod for Friday Night Funkin' directed by Froakli, T8KU and dublicus that's a crossover with the famous Analog Horror series The Walten Files.

For one reason or another, Boyfriend and Girlfriend (as well as presumably Pico) are transported into the world of The Walten Files, rap battling the various inhabitants of the world. The mod itself ties into the events of the main tapes, with the iconic couple ending up in various media and encountering Bon's entourage along the way.

This mod contains examples of:

  • Affably Evil: The Pumpkin Rabbit, even after killing Girlfriend, still seems to enjoy his time with the duo, even encouraging Boyfriend to sing another song, possibly to see how long he can last.
  • All There in the Manual: A large majority of the opponent's names are never said in the mod itself, so people would need to watch the original series to understand these characters better.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Bon still kills Brian Stells and Ashley Parks in this mod on-screen, though history is slightly altered by Boyfriend and Girlfriend's presence.
    • In "Caution", the two accidentally interrupt Brian's shift, so it's unknown if he had tested Bon's limbs beforehand or if Bon activated on his own accord.
    • Likewise, the two show up before Ashley can insert the tape containing the hit list into Billy's cassette player, meaning it's also unknown what drove Bon to kill her in "Blunder", since she didn't exactly get as deep as she did in the original video.
  • Antagonist Title: "Mortality" is the name of the last song in the Boozoo's Ghosts week and the character who sings it.
  • Art Shift: The mod has the same artstyle as its source material. Most notably, Boyfriend and Girlfriend have proper proportions during the Mysterious House and Boozoo's Ghosts weeks due to this.
  • Badass Boast: The Pumpkin Rabbit gets one in the cutscene before "Boogeyman".
Pumpkin Rabbit: Don't you know? Witch Sheep closed off the door… so there's no escape. Why don't you try doing what you do best? Nothing will save you anyway…
  • Big Damn Heroes: Once Mortality shows his true form, Girlfriend doesn't hesitate to get off the present and turn into her demon form, getting right in front of Boyfriend to defend him.
  • But Thou Must!: In the Ghastly Relocation update overview trailer for the mod, Ebenezer Boozoo is forced by the three ghosts to do narration for the video under the threat of death, and Mortality would not tolerate even a single mistake (though he doesn't press the situation when Boozoo mentions how there are 7 new songs in the update, so as not to spoil the new 8 secret songs).
  • Continuity Nod: The events of the Halloween Episode week take place after the events of the original Walten Files short. This is shown with missing posters for Tammy and Duckie before "Stranger", and their corpses being shown in the cutscene before "Boogeyman".
  • Cool vs. Awesome: The climax of "Mortality" has Mortality, the bunny personification of death, face off against Girlfriend in her demon form.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Billy and Bon serve as this concerning the story weeks for the Ghastly Relocation demo, while Mortality takes this role for the whole mod's demo.
  • Distant Prologue: The short prologue takes place in a void between the FNF world and the Walten Files universe, serving as an explanation for how Boyfriend and Girlfriend ended up in the latter universe in the first place.
  • Dual Boss: After a good amount of time in "Blunder", Boyfriend is fighting Billy and Bon together, both with their separate mechanics coming into play together.
  • Flat "What": Ashly says one when Boyfriend responds to her asking where he came from with beeping at the beginning of "Blunder".
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: There are multiple codes for secret songs that can be found in the cutscenes, though a small number need digging through the files to find.
  • Hostile Show Takeover: Bon pulls this in both "Caution" and "Blunder" by killing Brian and Ashley respectively, though Billy takes centre stage in the latter before Bon joins in himself.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Brian coughs at several points during "Caution" and ends up getting killed by Bon later in the same song.
  • Irony: Girlfriend, a demon, dresses up as an Angel during the Mysterious House week.
  • Interface Spoiler: Subverted for "Lucky You". Like with Hotline 024's "Astral Projection", the HP bar is absent throughout the song, meaning the player has no chance of knowing how far away they are from losing. If the player hadn't played Rendezvous first, the bar would've spoiled the fact that they were indeed playing as Sophie Walten herself.
  • Killed Mid-Sentence: Brian gets killed midway through "Caution", courtesy of Bon. Ashley suffers the same fate later on in "Blunder", though instead screams as she meets her demise.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Boozoo complains about the fact that Boyfriend and the Sad Ghost are randomly singing midway through "Lies".
  • Lone Wolf Boss: The Pumpkin Rabbit is the sole opponent in the Mysterious House week, compared to the variety of opponents fought in other weeks
  • The Many Deaths of You: If Boyfriend (or Girlfriend) lose to the cruellest foes of the Walten Files universe, they suffer fates that directly reflect those of the original series.
  • Mythology Gag: Besides the mod being one to The Walten Files as a whole, there are others of interest:
    • During "Rendezvous", Sophie uses her design from the teaser for "Bunnyfarm", dubbed "Commercial", instead of the one used in the episode itself. Likewise, the code to access the song, "FUN", is a reference to the video as well.
    • The code used to access the secret song "Lucky You", "HEARTACHES", is the name of the same song that rose in popularity from the Everywhere at the End of Time album, the song of which was also used in The Walten Files and one cutscene in this mod.
    • The code for "Marketable Plushie", "MAKESHIP", refers to the name of the company that made the Bon plushie for the campaign. Plush Bon's poses are also directly taken from preview images of the plush on the company's website.
    • "Spin" directly refers to an unlisted video of the same name on Martin Walls' YouTube channel, with his avatar and Pixel Bon spinning around for a minute.
  • Noodle Incident: How and why does Mortality know Boyfriend by name?
  • Nostalgia Filter: Certain settings available in the Options menu allow for a much more authentic experience that harkens back to the original series, such as a 4:3 screen display and a VHS filter.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: While Boyfriend and Girlfriend still maintain their usual Fearless Fool act from the base game, they're a bit more cautious of their surroundings in this mod and are more careful around those they meet. In the Halloween Episode, Boyfriend is clearly shocked to see Girlfriend's corpse amongst the others, while in the Christmas Episode, after facing the Jolly Ghost, the two immediately begin to flee, clearly stressed from the events, and both show clear anger towards Mortality as soon as he unveils his more horrifying form to them.
  • Past Victims Showcase: The cutscene for "Boogeyman" has Boyfriend look around to see all of Pumpkin Rabbit's previous victims, now including Girlfriend. All the while upbeat music plays in the background.
  • Present-Day Past: Played straight throughout the mod, as, aside from "Quantum", all the songs take place in the late 70s and early 80s. Ebenezer Boozoo lampshades this in the Ghastly Relocation update's overview trailer, not even knowing what a "Funky Night Friday" or even social media is, though the Three Ghosts do for some reason.
  • Promoted to Playable: Girlfriend steps up to defend Boyfriend midway through "Mortality", and Pico is currently available to play as during Week 1's songs. Also, Bodoque is playable during "Minutos", Pixel Bon in "Spin" and Sophie Walten is the playable character during "Lucky You".
  • Recurring Boss: Bon (or at least a version of him) is fought 10 times: His animatronic self is fought in "Caution", its remix, and "Blunder", Little Bon is fought in "Sleepover", its remix and "Roots", Promo Bon is fought in "Protocol" and "Relocation", Classic Bon is fought in "Repurpose" and a plush of him is fought in "Marketable Plushie". Bon is seen in "Mangled", but never directly fights Boyfriend there, simply citing his iconic words "You will beautiful".
  • Unexplained Recovery: Girlfriend, despite being rather gorily killed by the Pumpkin Rabbit before "Boogeyman", recovers near the end of the song. It's not explained why this is, though Pumpkin Rabbit might have admired Boyfriend's persistence and gave them both a chance to leave.
  • The Unfought: Rosemary Walten appears to have a couple of turns midway through "Mangled", though due to that moment's nature as a flashback, Boyfriend has no notes against her. Same currently applies to Boozoo, making him the only Showstopper so far, outside of his Christmas counterpart, to not be seen at all.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight:
    • Zig-zagged regarding Boyfriend and Girlfriend's presence. While most characters don't mind singing with Boyfriend, a few characters notice that he and Girlfriend don't belong, namely the narrator for "Sleepover" (who points out that they weren't on the guest list for the sleepover), Brian Stells (who is not happy with them getting in the way of his shift), Ashley Parks (who asks where Boyfriend even came from at the start of "Blunder", and responds with a Flat "What" when Boyfriend beeps at her), Witch Sheep (who says she's never seen them around the neighborhood) and Ebenezer Boozoo (who asks why Boyfriend and the Sad Ghost are singing).
    • Played entirely straight with Pico. Throughout his three songs, nobody points out that he's not supposed to be here, even with his trademark Uzi in his hand.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: "Caution" is where the difficulty of the mod goes right up, being far more fast paced than the previous two songs and it's also where the first two dangerous mechanics come into play once Bon kills Brian, meaning the player needs to be more on their toes from this point forward.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Brian only gets half of a song to his name before getting Killed Mid-Sentence. The same applies to Ashley as she's killed and stuffed into the Billy animatronic.
  • Worthy Opponent: Pumpkin Rabbit seems to see Boyfriend as this. He says "Very good…" towards the end of "Stranger", encourages him to do "what [he] does best" in the cutscene before "Boogeyman", and lets him and Girlfriend go after being beaten the second time.
