Sonic Omens, originally going by the working title Sonic 2020, is a Fan Game series based on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. This game was developed by BOLTrtg, which later merged with Ouroboros Studio, using the Sonic Infinity Engine. The game series was released in episodic form, with the first episode being on February 14, 2020. The final three episodes were released on August 10, 2022.

List of episodes in chronological order:

  1. The Breakthrough (May 2, 2021)
  2. Temple of Sands (May 2, 2021)
  3. White Jungle (February 14, 2020)
  4. Shadow of Water (June 22, 2020)
  5. The Exiled (August 10, 2022)
  6. Worlds Colliding (August 10, 2022)
  7. The Last Omen (August 10, 2022)

The story serves as an Interquel taking place between Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors, explaining why the Chaos Emeralds haven't been used as the story-driven MacGuffins in the latter game onward.

Can be downloaded here. It was changed from the working title Sonic 2020 to avoid confusion with the 2020 film adaptation.

Tropes in the game:

  • Adaptational Wimp: Super Sonic, especially in the final boss battle Phase 1, since The Exiled, the Big Bad of the game, destroyed the Chaos and the Master Emeralds – the transformation was only possible because Chip's bracelet (that Sonic received as a gift in the ending of Sonic Unleashed and was wearing since then) absorbed the emeralds' energies. However, it's a severely weakened Super Mode in comparison, since Sonic needs to charge himself with energy to transform, and a single attack from The Exiled is enough to depower him.
    • Downplayed in Phase 2 of the same battle, since the bracelet has recharged itself with enough energy to lock Sonic in his Super Sonic state. However, every successful attack from The Exiled costs ten rings, and we still have the one-ring-per-second rule. At least, when you attack the boss with an energy boost, you receive 50 rings to maintain the Super Mode.
  • Alternate Universe: To both the main series (until Sonic Unleashed) and Sonic X.
  • Big Bad: The Exiled, who is attempting to sacrifice Sonic's world in order to return to his homeland.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent since Sonic Generations, G.U.N has made a comeback and are back to their Adventure-era role.
  • Canon Immigrant: The Metarex and Chris Thorndyke from Sonic X.
  • Canon Welding: The game canonizes at least some of the events of Sonic X, such as Chris Thorndyke and the Metarex being from another dimension and having met Sonic before.
  • Continuity Nod: Many references to past Sonic games, especially Sonic Unleashed are made here. It's also essential to have watched, at least, Sonic X’s final season.
  • Cutting Off the Branches: Intended; considering the game was made to explain why the Chaos Emeralds stopped being used in the story after Unleashed, it's apparent that the story was made with the Wii version of Sonic Colors in mind rather than the DS version which had the Chaos Emeralds and Super Sonic show up for its True Final Boss. Of course, that fails to acknowledge how the Emeralds are unlockable power-ups in the Wii version of Colors, along with their in-story appearance for both versions of Sonic Generations.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: The Exiled lost faith in the future of Sonic's world after G.U.N. reversed Chris' pro-peace reforms following Chris's death.
  • Darker and Edgier: Tends to take itself more seriously than most fan games, along with having a more bleak art style.
  • Disappointed by the Motive: Sonic is not happy when the Exiled reveals that everything he's done was because he's homesick.
  • Dramatic Irony: The Exiled, the Metarex who survived and poses even more of a risk to the universe than his brethren, as he'd destroy all life, animal and plant, survived because he was a Token Good Teammate who Dark Oak banished to another universe when he spoke out against his Knight Templar motivations and actually befriended Chris personally.
  • Enemy Mine: Overlapping with Teeth-Clenched Teamwork, Sonic, Tails and Eggman agree to put their differences aside to stop The Exiled from destroying the world while trying to return home.
  • Episodic Game: Seven separate episodes, developed and released Out of Order.
  • Fallen Hero: The Exiled was a Token Good Teammate of the Metarex, and after Dark Oak's defeat became Chris Thorndyke's friend - however, after Chris' death, G.U.N. reversed his pro-peace reforms and the Exiled lost faith that the world could be improved, instead deciding to go back to his homeworld at all costs - even the fabric of the universe.
  • Grappling-Hook Pistol: Sonic is able swing across certain points using Chip's bracelet, which produces a energy-like tether similar to the Enerbeam mechanic from Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric.
  • Internal Reformist: Chris rose through the ranks of G.U.N. to pivot them to a more peaceful direction. But following his death, G.U.N. fell back into its extremist ways.
  • Interquel: Omens takes place between Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors
  • Last of His Kind: The Exiled is the last surviving Metarex.
  • Merged Reality: Before the events of Sonic Unleashed, Chris somehow managed to merge his world with Sonic's world.
  • Murderous Malfunctioning Machine: The first boss of the game is a broken-down version of the Egg Dragoon, called Egg Dragoon Zero, incapable of flight and uses its Gatling gun arm to bounce around.
  • And Now for Someone Completely Different: "Shadow of Water" and part of "The Exiled" have you playing as Shadow, chaos abilities and all.
  • Rapid Aging: Chris' interdimensional travels sped up his aging process, causing him to die in no more than 15 years.
  • Scenery Porn: The forest settings are beautiful.
  • Sequel Hook: During The Stinger, Tails is shown with two tickets to Eggman's Interstellar Amusement Park on his desk.
  • Shout-Out: The opening scene of "The Breakthrough" is reminiscent of the opening for Spider-Man (PS4).
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Overlapping with Enemy Mine, Sonic, Tails and Eggman agree to put their differences aside to stop The Exiled from destroying the world while trying to return home. However, the banter between them is very bitter, with Eggman pushing Sonic's buttons and the blue blur criticizing the not-so-good-doctor harshly for the consequences of his actions to Chip and Chris.
  • The Stinger: Sonic visiting Chris's grave.
  • The Voice: Amy communicates with Sonic in the middle of "The Breakthrough".
  • Title Drop: Before the final boss battle against the Exiled, Super Sonic shouts: "Consider this your bad omen!"
  • Trapped in Another World: The Exiled's motive. Being the last surviving member of his species and stuck in Sonic's world, he wants nothing more than to visit the homeland he was banished from one last time. He doesn't care what it costs... even if it means destroying Sonic's world to accomplish it.
  • Unexpected Gameplay Change: A segment in "Temple of Sands" and "Worlds Colliding" each have a segment where you play as Tails in the Hyper Tornado, with gameplay switching to a 3D shoot-'em-up style.
  • Villainous Legacy: Dark Oak kicked off the events of the game by exiling the Big Bad.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The post-credit scenes.
    • Knuckles leaves Angel Island. With the Chaos Emeralds destroyed, so was the Master Emerald. So he has nothing to protect anymore.
    • Rouge and Shadow meet up in an undisclosed place.
    • Tails just got two tickets to Eggman's Interstellar Amusement Park.
    • Sonic visits Chris' grave.
