Trivia / Werewolf by Night (2022)

Go To

  • Absurdly Short Production Time: Unlike most MCU entries, which take months to film and years to develop, this special was shot in just 12 days. And from start to finish, the special was made over the span of just 15 months.
  • Creator's Oddball: Michael Giacchino, who is primarily known for composing soundtracks for various superhero projects, steps into the director's chair for this Disney+ special (in addition to composing).
  • Completely Different Title: In Spanish, while in Latin America the special was known by its literal translation (Hombre lobo de noche), in Spain it was known as La maldición del hombre lobo ("The Curse of the Werewolf").
  • Fake Nationality: Elsa Bloodstone, who is presumably English (judging by her accent and that of her father), is played by Northern Irish Laura Donnelly.
  • Inspiration for the Work: Michael Giacchino cited his love for old horror movies such as King Kong, The Wolf Man, and Poltergeist. The characterization for the titular character and Man-Thing was also based on Giacchino's general feelings for the monsters in those movies, often wondering why the creatures would always be subject to Van Helsing Hate Crimes.
  • Newbie Boom: Many MCU fans started diving into the mythos of Elsa, Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night himself thanks to the special.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Michael Giacchino was a big fan of Werewolf by Night's original comics and admitted that he himself pitched the idea of a special based on the character to Kevin Feige himself. Feige, being just as big a fan, was more than happy to greenlight the idea.
  • Saved from Development Hell: A Werewolf by Night Movie was in the works at Artisan in the 2000s. Like Morbius, it was eventually made in 2022.
  • What Could Have Been: The special was shot with the intention of it being entirely in color, but Michael Giacchino convinced Kevin Feige to make the short Deliberately Monochrome for most of its runtime. In the final cut, only the last few minutes of the film has color in it (though a fully colorized version of the film would be released the following year).
  • Working Title: Buzzcut.
  • You Look Familiar: Kirk Thatcher plays the boombox-carrying "punk", as a reference to his role from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, in Spider-Man: Homecoming who says "Not bad," after Spider-Man does a flip. Thatcher is recast here as one of the monster hunters, Jovan.

  • The director assumed this special would be rated TV-MA due to it being Bloodier and Gorier with scare elements. However, it has officially been given a TV-14 rating. Word of God has implied that the black-and-white filter is actually what allowed them to get gorier while maintaining the lower age rating, as it obscures some of the nastier wounds in shadow/removes the red from blood.
